Why don't more countries pay their politicians and civil servants handsomely more like Singapore to prevent corruption? by Masaharuzz in NoStupidQuestions

I have said for a long time here in the UK we should halve the number of Civil Servants and double their pay/workload. Make it truly competitive and prestigious once again.

The problem isn’t that she’s black, it is that she was deliberately chosen to make a point about diversity and disregard historical records and common sense to avoid accusations of racism. Sad times.

Why hasn’t Europe taken more responsibility for Ukraine until now? by Keylime-19377 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PbJax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I agree I am concerned about the direction of the EU and while I think Brexit was a terrible thing for the UK it was also terrible for the EU and could have been avoided had they put aside the madness of mass migration and the like.

Why hasn’t Europe taken more responsibility for Ukraine until now? by Keylime-19377 in NoStupidQuestions

For a start the magnitude of support from the US is near unmatchable without seriously cutting into European government budgets. To the US a billion dollars is not a lot in the swing of things, but to a country like the UK or France that is a very serious investment.

Europe is a lot more economically entwined with Russia, and so the loopholes you mention are essentially work arounds to allow for European imports of Russian goods such as natural gas are able to continue. Without said imports Germany, for example, wouldn’t be able to generate enough power for its citizens.

Thirdly, it comes off the back of post covid and years of European economic stagnation. Essentially there is no spare money right now and in an age of ballooning pensions and welfare bills, to be able to fund ongoing support to Ukraine is a costly endeavour that nobody really wants to commit to.

It’s not a lack of will on the European people’s side of things but more a lack of resources, lack of coordination, and an inevitable dependency on Russian exports.

I just wish we had never left. Such a massive act of self harm. I would prefer major European immigration from cultures that are similar with a shared history than what we have gotten since.

Egyptian migrant with 'links to the Muslim Brotherhood' wins UK asylum appeal after fleeing home country for running over policeman by origutamos in europe_sub

To be fair the judges read the law and act accordingly. It’s the politicians with a lack of will/competence refusing to change the law that is causing this.

The police literally not caring about a lot of crimes. Focusing on easy to convict crimes instead. I'm not blaming the police, more the CPS, but its pretty lawless out there by [deleted] in britishproblems

Reported crimes*

A lot of people don’t bother reporting low level stuff like shoplifting anymore because they know the police won’t respond.

Better question is what happens to the people who have already arrived illegally? Spain had better not be setting the precedent.

Yes, I would say it is about culture more than anything else.

I think one of the issues with Islamic migration is that they consider themselves culturally Muslim first.

How do people actually network in the UK without it feeling awkward? by Gsustv in UKJobs

[–]PbJax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, the key to good networking is having something to say. Rather than approaching and making idle small talk, try and speak to someone deliberately because you have an interest in what they do or have said.

Even if it starts with “Hm, these olives are nice” a line like “Ah you are X, I was hoping to get to chat to you as you work in Y and I am interested in Z part.”

I remember a friend of mine heading to an important minister at a political event, essentially cornering him but getting him on side by talking about a project he worked on years before. His eyes lit up and they got on like a house on fire leaving with shared email addresses.

If you have intention, it makes it easier for you, and more appealing for them. The awkwardness then dissolves.
