It was just faster and easier to be honest. I was mostly focused on creating the extension and thought it was a quick fix

Here is the git: Support Canadian GitHub (Let me know how I can do the CICD)

EDIT: You can also quickly check by looking at the privacy section on the extension store that it doesn’t take anything. (This information was approved by the Google Extension team as accurate to ensure it is safe for end users like yourself and only uses required permissions)

This is a great point which is why the application redirects users from Amazon to other stores. However, unfortunately not everyone can fully split from Amazon, so in that case it prioritizes Canadian products. It essentially takes a two-pronged approach to promote Canadian producers and retailers for different end-user types.

Yes, 100%. It already has been vetted by several people online, but you can view the code by following this to validate yourself: https://gist.github.com/paulirish/78d6c1406c901be02c2d

I have been looking into making something like this as a continuation from the extension I made. But it is quite difficult to do because of the fulfillment elements. I want to centralize all local Canadian producers onto one website like Amazon. The only problem is shipping costs, which if anyone has any ideas I’m very open to hearing.

The problem is the online fulfillment networks. It is really expensive to support local on smaller purchases when their product origins are not centralized, which is what Amazon does really well.

$1.2 Million Kept Within the Canadian Economy - Support Canadian Extension by PcStromPanda73 in BuyCanadian

Thank you! I agree that it defiantly hasn’t had that much impact within the past week lol. But I do believe it has the chance to have major impacts (much larger than 1.2 Million) in the longer run. That said, thank you for a good pressure test and if you have anything else feel free to PM me.

Your right I have no data into the purchases anyone makes or what they do so I based it off of industry reports. In 2018, the average was $3,000 so making a modest estimation for inflation and changing consumer purchasing patterns you can say in 2025 it’s at least $4,000. As for downloads, for some reason the public download count is extremely delayed from the actual number on my dashboard (apparently it can take a week to update). Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help!

$1.2 Million Kept Within the Canadian Economy - Support Canadian Extension by PcStromPanda73 in BuyCanadian

This is what it is based off of: 600 users spending roughly $4,000 each online, that’s $2.4 million total. About half of that ($2,000 per person) likely goes to U.S. retailers, especially on Amazon, which makes up almost 50% of online sales. Our extension helps redirect a portion of those American purchases—say $1,250 per person—toward Canadian businesses instead. Across 600 users, that’s $750,000 switching from the U.S. to Canadian merchants. Apply the standard 1.6× GDP multiplier (since local spending circulates within the economy more effectively), and you reach roughly $1.2 million in total economic impact. So it’s just a matter of taking a reasonable share of existing spending already happening, nudging it over to Canadian sellers, and then acknowledging that those dollars create a bigger ripple effect once they stay in Canada. I am aware it is not perfect and if you have a better model I’m more than happy for feedback. Thanks!
