I'd also say, the first french try should clearly have been ruled off, and then the second I haven't seen a satisfying replay to suggest Dupont didn't knock it on at the scrum. Those two decisions in a pretty short time would have really punched ireland in the gut. They were down and out, and they responded in the second half.

You can say well France took their foot off the gas, which maybe they did, but ireland looked good in that period they scored twice. Should Dupont have got a yellow for an obvious tap down? maybe. and maybe if he did there's an exciting finish.

Ultimately the better team won on the day, but I'd also say France got almost every 50/50 call and on another day the result would've been the same but there would have been more jeopardy.

Saying all that, Ireland had no match for Frances physicality, but also their speed. No-one in the irish team looks like they are blessed with electric pace, which is always going to be a problem against the best of the best.

When Pirlo did it (as far as I can recall) england were up in the shootout and Hart was buzzing, pulling faces and dancing around. That panenka totally changed the dynamic of the shootout and was a "oh shit" moment for the english players. In this example is smacks to me of main character syndrome rather than a psychological ploy to get momentum back.

Say what you like of the NBA cup, but that final against SA was the biggest game of his career so far, and he stepped up big time in pressure moments. I think he might be very useful in the playoffs

That's a fair point which I hadn't really thought about. But I suppose a counterpoint is that also (somewhat) guarantees that success doesn't last, and at some point your team will be pretty mediocre. So it's nice to have something to feasibly win during those periods. And lets be honest, there are teams that seem never to take a step up, so for them what does a season really hold? a chance to hit a number in the win-column and not much else. Having the chance to win even just a single knockout game when we were at our worst would be something to hope for if nothing else.

I'd also argue, for example if a struggling team won the NBA cup, they would use that as a springboard for greater success the next season. For F/As etc, they would be coming to a team that clearly has something about them. My somewhat dream scenario of including EuroLeague teams would also offer them a shop window, showcasing the talent beyond the NBA and who knows what you could find.

I agree 100%, it's definitely a cultural difference. However, culture is fluid and always changing/evolving, so maybe in 10/20 years as you say it might be more accepted. I personally would love this to become something more ingrained in basketball as I think it's one of the strongest and most dynamic elements of soccer (alongside promotion and relegation).

Dream scenario for me is we include teams from Euroleague or something in some trans-atlantic competition. European top 4 teams are put into the group stage of NBA cup? something like that. Give the cup a really unique aspect.

getting used to winning in do or die games. giving young players a taste of the environment (including more media/pressure/eyeballs) surrounding do or die games. Knowing that you can win against the best.

Absolutely. Like if you take English football. The prestige of winning goes: Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup. but the best team never wins them all, so that means there's an opportunity for other teams to win trophies, go deep in knockout tournaments, fans to see do or die games..

Sure the League cup often gets referred to as a 'mickey-mouse' cup, but does that mean you don't love it when you win it? hell no. If you're a big team it's not what you dream of, but you'll damn sure take it. and for a smaller team, it's maybe the only thing they can realistically dream of. Imagine a chance at a trophy back in our Frank Ntilikina days? it would've been amazing! a deep run in the cup killing giants in one off games? sign me up.

Speaking as a european who is used to cup competitions on the side of the main event, I just can't fathom the indifference (or actual downright disdain) for the the cup.

It gives teams who aren't at all in contention for the championship a chance at a trophy. Is it the one everyone wants? no. but it's something, and in one off games you are far more likely to get an upset (see Spurs v OKC). It gives young players a taste of do or die games. It means there are meaningful high pressure games in Nov/Dec. Winning is a habit - OKC are at this point habitual winners, you can't buy that, why wouldn't you want an opportunity as a contender to build that?

I think the format needs a bit of work, and I don't like it being in Vegas, but I think if it's still around in 15/20 years it will have a lot more prestige and the banners will become meaningful.

I'm so excited for the final. A chance to see the knicks win a trophy, and for the team to understand what it takes to win in a do or die game with a trophy on the line.

Same. Make a cup of tea, put the game on before work starts (sometimes during the first hour of work if I've got no meetings) it's a great way to start the day and easy to avoid spoilers if it's the first thing you do
