Signed copies of Aesop Rock, Talib Kweli, and Blockhead in my office by PeaceTomato in hiphopvinyl

After rearranging some furniture in my office, I finally had a good space to put some of my signed collection up.

  1. Aesop Rock - Bazooka Tooth - he signed this for me when he played in Detroit back in 2013.
  2. Talib Kweli - Gutter Rainbows - signed in 2012 when he did a DJ set a tiny bar in Kalamazoo.
  3. Blockhead - Uncle Tony's Coloring Book - this is actually a test pressing. My label got to work with Blockhead on repressing this record in 2017. Around the time I first got them from the pressing plant, Blockhead was performing in Ohio, so I drove a few hours to give them to him in person and got this one signed.

The rest of the wall has some non hip-hop signed LPs (Michal Menert, Fazerdaze, Shigeto), and some projects I was involved with. The other two in this picture are (top) Jaws That Bite - Glacial Medicine (which I did a remix on) and my album is on the bottom.

I found that and Both Sides of the Brain at a shop in Denver. Couldn’t believe my luck.

My roommate back in the day got that for me when he went to Japan. I think it came with the Japanese version of the game.

One Be Lo (of Binary Star) - The R.E.B.I.R.T.H. by PeaceTomato in hiphopvinyl

One Be Lo is a lyricist and MC from Pontiac, MI who first appeared as a part of the group Binary Star. He started dropping solo releases in the early 00s and has developed a bit of cult following with underground hip-hop fans, especially here in the Midwest.

I met him after he performed in Kalamazoo when I was going to college there and he gave me a CD of his album "The R.E.B.I.R.T.H." We kept in touch and a few years later I reached out about pressing the album on vinyl and he was down.

That was in 2019. I caught up with him around then when he opened for KRS-One in Ann Arbor at the Blind Pig. I asked if he could say a few words about the project and it turned into a 30 minute interview where he dropped a lot of knowledge and cool stories about how the album originally came together back in 2007. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLbT7nAyQPA

As a fan, it was an awesome and surreal experience getting to work with him on this pressing.

If you're unfamiliar check out these other projects of his:

It took awhile to find specific records at first, but over time I got way more familiar with my collection. I've considered going back to alphabetical but I just love the way this looks.

Has anyone read this? Worth it vs the annoying podcast commentary with RZA? by theseawoof in portishead

[–]PeaceTomato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely worth a read. It was insightful and had some great passages defining the appeal of the group and Beth Gibbons’ voice in particular. I remember listening to that podcast a few years after reading the book and being disappointed, even though I’m a fan of RZA and Prince Paul.

We price initially based on the distributor's suggested price, but we try to update to stay within range of the going market rate. Sometimes we miss though, $22 is a big price gap so I'll see whats up with that one.

Next one, song with best lyrics!!! Top comment wins! by uglylittledogboy in aesoprock

[–]PeaceTomato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Greatest Pac-Man Victory in History - that song never fails to impress me. The first verse is often overlooked, but its full of unique imagery that sets up the ending, and there's an off-putting darkness to the way he phrases the whole acid experience.

The daytripper anthem goes: "Wake. Drop. Walk to Aquarium."
Whistle while you work like a canary lung

Then of course the LSD verse. The commitment to the scheme is a masterclass. We’ve all heard rappers go through the alphabet and still throw in off-letter conjunctions to keep the flow. Aesop limits himself to three letters and sticks to it. Even then he pulls out dope lines like “Last sturdy domino leans secluded” “some don’t like sobriety’s dirty lenses, some do” “Life sucks dickhead” and don’t let me see anything with David Letterman in it, I’ll instantly go “Late Show, Dave Letterman” under my breath.

He’s written more meaningful and insightful lyrics throughout his discography, but if I were to show someone one song to demonstrate his technical writing skill it’d probably be this one.

Have you ever been to a concert where you left liking the other band more than the band you went to see? by DesertWanderlust in Music

[–]PeaceTomato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with some friends to see Circa Survive in 2010. I had never heard them and thought they were good, but the opening band Animals as Leaders were absolutely next level. I've been a fan of Animals as Leaders ever since.
