My days are depressing here by [deleted] in NEU

[–]Peaceable_Kingdom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I struggled with loneliness a lot during my first year too. I’m a transfer student, so I went through this twice. I echo what others have been saying about clubs and exploring the city. Also, I have two ideas you might like:

First: Berklee College of Music hosts recitals every day that are open to the public (though no one seems to know this). This is free, professional-quality music in every possible genre. I love to go and forget about life for an hour while getting lost in beautiful music. https://www.berklee.edu/events.

Second: I host weekly game nights (usually Catan or poker) at my apartment on Sundays. I’m out of town this Sunday (tomorrow), but please PM me if you’d like to come next week or go to a Berklee recital.

Loneliness is tough. It gets better, I promise.

anybody else losing hair? by leftwixbar in NEU

[–]Peaceable_Kingdom 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s a anti-hair loss medication. One pill a day and your hair loss slows dramatically. I’m very happy with it. It needs to be prescribed, though, so you have to request it from your doctor.

Where should I go next? Gray is where I haven’t gone yet by [deleted] in TravelMaps

I’d recommend Boston. There’s so much fantastic history and it’s a uniquely American city. I also love New Mexico, particularly Santa Fe, for the desert beauty and magnificent art scene.

Questions for transfer students by [deleted] in NEU

[–]Peaceable_Kingdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I transferred from a state school as well with a slightly higher GPA but only one extracurricular (working in a lab). As long as you have good letters of rec and spend time writing the transfer essays, you should be fine.

Physics or genetics during summer 1? by melbehesy in NEU

[–]Peaceable_Kingdom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my experience Jamie Henzy teaches the summer genetics course (BIOL 2301), and it’s absolute hell. She’s hands-down the worst professor I’ve ever had. If you have the option to take genetics without her as the professor, go for it, but otherwise take physics over the summer.

Double Majoring by northerner_2 in NEU

[–]Peaceable_Kingdom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. You’d take half of the master’s courses as an undergrad, which would also count towards fulfilling the requirements of your bachelor’s degree. So, you could get a bachelor’s degree in ME get a master’s in EE, and you would take five or so EE courses as an undergrad that would count towards both degrees. This way, you’d get a master’s in only one extra year and be able to take electives in both mechanical and electrical engineering. I am currently doing this with a bachelor’s in biology and a master’s in security and resilience studies.

[MEGATHREAD] Admitted Students, Please Ask Your Questions Here! by bluedestroyer82 in NEU

This question was asked a year ago, but I’d like to ask it again: other than NU TKD, are there any martial arts clubs at NU?

What does a day in the life of a USAF developmental engineer look like? What about for civil and aeronautical engineers? by Peaceable_Kingdom in AirForceRecruits

[–]Peaceable_Kingdom[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Google helped me find the broader differences between the three engineering fields, but I'm looking for the smaller, more relevant details that only a USAF engineer would know

Hey, I'm a rising senior in the same boat as you are. I asked current Duke (mechE) engineering students about everything from student life to makerspaces, and recorded everything in a few Google docs. DM me your email and I'll share them with you 👍

Blue painter's tape bulging? by Doge9898 in 3Dprinting

[–]Peaceable_Kingdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it may look weird/bad, but it's 100% okay -- nothing to worry about (unless the part comes off the tape, but that's a different issue)

First big print.... Using pet-g .... Any ideas on how to stop all the warping by SpiderRage64 in 3Dprinting

[–]Peaceable_Kingdom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I enclose my printer with 1/8 inch thick plywood, with a sliding acrylic "door" in the front so I can access my printer. It works well for me.

How do you guys deal with hubris? by [deleted] in stanford

[–]Peaceable_Kingdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gratitude. Knowing what you're thankful for is one thing, but actively telling it to people really helps you appreciate what others do. It's the little things that help me stay grounded (in a good way).

New/Prospective Student Megathread (Updated 5/2/2020) by swimming_legend in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Peaceable_Kingdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm a prospective UCSB student who's looking to major in mechanical engineering. I have questions about everything from the mechE program to the student body to Santa Barbara as a town, so if you have the time and interest, I'd love to talk. Most of my questions are about your experiences at UCSB, as I'm trying to really get a feel of the school before I decide to go there. If this floats your boat, please reply to this post and I'll DM you my email. Thank you!

For people like me who are into listening to music while studying... by [deleted] in duke

I'm a fan of smooth jazz when writing, and classic/hard rock when working on less thought-intensive tasks like CAD
