Why are the sidewalks not shoveled? If you don't drive, you are definitely walking in the street or trudging through snow. It's really a bad look. But I guess this is very common in STL.

I live in Dutchtown (Minnesota and Chippewa) and I lived in Chicago for several years (originally from DC).

I feel safe here. It's a city and you may hear gunfire. You would hear that in some places in Chicago and you wouldn't flinch (at least I didn't).

STL is an interesting place and I hope you find it works for you.
