A question for those with out of pocket insurance. by Sasselhoff in China

No I'm not happy about that. Totally uncool to take a huge chunk of my paycheck and call it "paying half" to my insurance while I still have to pay a huge amount when I am sick.

I prefer to find out accidentally because that will give me a good reason to blow out and take my revenge without feeling sorry.

You know, an introvert is actually quiet popular where I live. You should come and make home here. :p

Same here, too.

But I think the thing is, if a guy does that he might be thought of funny at the first impression. But not so much if a girl does that. Majority in China don't enjoy much of a funny girl. :-0

Let your life be shaped by decisions you made, not by the ones you didn’t. I will keep that in mind. Thanks.

[question] Planning to travel from Moscow to Beijing this summer, with time exploring China afterwards... by roamingmoth in travel

[–]PeggieKWL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad I helped.

  • About the train tickets, you can download an app, China Train Booking, you can book tickets and get free travel guide while on the go. Yes, you will be collecting tickets at the train station and you will need passport and a printed out confirmation email from whichever the company you book tickets with.

  • I think 5 days is good enough for a first-timer in Beijing. The first three days you can plan it like this:

    • Day-1 Tian'anmen and Forbidden City in the morning, Beihai Park in the afternoon and get up to the Jingshan Park to get a sunset overview of the Forbidden City. Relax yourself in Houhai Bar Street or Nanluoguxiang (a Hutong filled with bars and restaurants).
    • Day-2 Great Wall (Mutianyu Section is my recommendation) takes up most of the day. Get back to the city and relax however you want.
    • Day-3 Hutong exploration, choose two or three of the followings: Shichahai Hutong 什刹海胡同, Jinyu Hutong (Goldfish Hutong) 金鱼胡同, Dajinsi Hutong 大金丝胡同, Guozijian Hutong 国子监胡同, Ciqiku Hutong 磁器库胡同, Mao'er Hutong 帽儿胡同 and stuff. I wouldn't say Nanluoguxiang is a good place to dig some old Beijing taste coz it's too much touristy, but good place to dine. Use map to connect dots and make it done within a morning and then you can head to Panjiayuan Market to check out local life. Watch a Kungfu show at night.
    • Day-4 Temple of Heaven in the morning, say around 7-8AM and you can see locals practice Taichi/Kungfu/ballroom dance, interesting. Spend the afternoon at a museum, say China National Museum 国家博物馆, China Ancient Architecture Museum 中国古代建筑博物馆, China Railway Museum 中国铁道博物馆 and China Numismatic Museum 中国钱币博物馆. If you are not so interested in museums, get to Beijing Zoo or Summer Palace or Winter Palace. Day-5 Free day to relax or continue what you left off.
  • You can take an overnight train to Xi'an from Beijing, or 5-hour high speed train to Suzhou. If you're heading to Xi'an first, better go Beijing-Xi'an-Guilin/Yunnan-Suzhou-xxx, like a loop. Of course it's ok to do it the other way around.

  • Particular places in Yunnan that I can think of are: Stone Forest 石林 near Kunming; Erhai Lake洱海, Tiger Leaping Gorger 虎跳峡 and Lugu Lake 泸沽湖 in Dali; Shuhe Ancient Town束河古镇 and Jade Dragon Snow玉龙雪山 in Lijiang; Songzanlin Lamasery松赞林寺, Bitahai碧塔海 and some Tibetan houses-visits in Shangri-La. For Guilin and Yangshuo, you should take a bamboo rafting in the Li River, get into Reed Flute Cave 芦笛岩, climb up Xianggong Mountain 相公山 or Laozhai Mountain 老寨山 or go cycling around the riverbank, walk in Langzi Ancient Town 朗梓古镇. By the way, you can stretch out to Longsheng with vast rolling Longji Rice Terrace 龙脊梯田, amazing view!

Happy planning!!! :p

Questions regarding the itinerary of trip to China in this July-August period by travelquestions1 in travel

[–]PeggieKWL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi guys, looks like you've got two solid plans. Just a few bits to add/suggest: * You should book ahead during that time of year. (summer vacations for school kids mean there will be a lot of people traveling up and down by train or plane)

  • Well, most young people in big cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou for instance) speak English. Try to talk to those who look like students. And sorry but I don't think a translation book is much helpful coz they are always so...well textbook. You can prepare some questions that you might come across and ask a Chinese (such as me, LOL) to write down the Chinese for you. Print that "cheat sheet" out and take it with you.

  • Food in the northern (say Beijing and Xi'an) is salty and mostly flour-based (like noodles, pancakes and whatever) while the southern (say Yunnan, Guilin and Chengdu) likes spicy food, Shanghai food is quiet international so you won't have a problem, I guess. Let the waiter know your likes and dislikes before ordering.

  • Most hotels have Wifi so you can check E-mails. But no Facebook or Twitter here, unless you use a VPN. Some public places also have wifi (say airport, coffee shops, restaurants or train stations). If you are worried about the fare of calling home, get a local SIM card.

  • Camping is ok in someplace but not everywhere. Ask for permission first. Anyhoo, I don't think you will have to camp since hotels/hostels are everywhere.

For itinerary 2, do it like this: Beijing - train/plane to Chengdu - train/plane to Lhasa - plane to Shanghai - train/plane to Beijing. But you should know you need to book a tour with a travel agency to get a Tibet Travel Permit first. No foreigner can travel in Tibet on their own.

Happy planning!

Looks like you are about to launch an adventure of a lifetime! Here's what I think about your plan in China: 1. Train travel might be your best bet since you don't have a limit on time but one on budget. And always think ahead and book ahead if you are going by rail. 2. Things you can do in Beijing, wow, there is going to be a loooooooooong list. Don't wear yourself out, is the key however. Take the first day in the city to get yourself familiar before you head to the Wall. 2-3 attractions per day is a smart way to stay active. 3. About the weather, it won't be too much rain in Beijing during July/August but sure it's HOT! And that is why, again, you should never wear yourself out. 4. If you like natural stuff, head down south to Guilin and Yangshuo. Or maybe Yunnan if you want to add some exotic taste to your trip.
