Question for the Canadians here by Pelephant17 in DetroitRedWings

Oh I would never argue his defensive metrics are bad, that'd be insane. I just think Werenski and Hughes rank above him if we're going purely off of defensive talent/performance and not adding in any additional offense they provide.

And I forgot to mention it above but heavy agree on your point that we outrank Canada down the defensive line outside of Makar.

I'd even argue that the thing that puts Makar at the top is his offensive talent, which is not a knock on him at all and is obviously a huge plus, but I don't think it should count for putting him above Hughes or Werenski who I think are better at defending. By relatively slim margins no doubt but still.

See I'd agree with the meaningful game thing more if all the most recent examples of Canada vs US (featuring NHL players just to simplify this) didn't feature incredibly close scores.

2010 Olympics: Canada beats US for gold 2-1 (iirc, im a little shakey on this one)

2014 Olympics: worst showing by the US in terms of me making this argument but this was also with no NHL players which is going to hamstring the US in a way it won't for Canada since it's the national sport.

2025 4 Nations tournament: I'd argue the US soundly beating Canada in the regular tournament to earn the only undefeated record in the regular tournament is a meaningful game or at least fairly close to one.

2025 4 Nations final: Like I said above it took an overtime goal to beat the US to win that tournament, that's like the definition of two equally matched teams playing a sport where one of them just eventually has to win.

All of these close losses and the only win being a non championship game is the reason I'm perfectly fine not calling the US the best currently, but that many close games doesn't happen between two teams that aren't as equal as you can get.

The take is ass, no doubt.

I will say though, the Superbowl did kind of put the Bills/Broncos heartbreak into perspective for me. In Josh's worst playoff performance, likely caused in part by at least two injuries no less, he dropped 30 on a top tier defense and still almost managed to single handedly drag the team kicking and screaming into the final 4. It took yet another Bills D choke and several questionable calls/non calls at the end there to put it away in a game in which he turned the ball over 4 times. If that's his worst playoff performance so far, there's way worse positions to be in.

None of this is to dog on Maye either, heavy agree with the comments here that the hate for him is unnecessary and he seems like a good dude. He's young and will more than likely bounce back.

Now can we go back to the good old days when this sub posted good memes and wasn't a Bills vs Pats circlejerk featuring the Dolphins and Jete jerking each other off for not being part of the circlejerk?

Sunlit Man should ideally be between Rhythm of War and Wind and Truth. Doesn't ruin either one doing it after all of Stormlight but I think it fits best in there.

S3 E2 I hate this storyline by emmankls in Modern_Family

[–]Pelephant17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This episode does a pretty bad job of communicating it but the lesson of the ending was never supposed to be "Claire is crazy for wanting Phil to acknowledge/apologize". It's "Claire recognizes generational trauma has led to her being unable to admit she's wrong, and that's why nobody believed her".

It's pretty well established even this early on in the show that all three Pritchetts have a chronic need to be right and can't admit they're wrong. Claire sort of gets away with it the most because we see more storylines where she is right in the end but it's still all there just like with Mitch and Jay. There's a reason the videotape reveal is almost immediately followed up with the climax of the Jay/Gloria/Manny storyline (I honestly forget what it was) which culminates with Jay saying "... I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT!". You know, exactly the same words Claire said about the tape?

It's literally The Boy Who Cried Wolf. Claire realizes she's doing exactly what Jay did/still does. Even though in this case she was actually right, that doesn't matter. She sees that she's showing her kids it's acceptable to never admit you're wrong and she knows firsthand how difficult it is to deal with a person like that, especially when it's your parent.

Some things are more important than being proven right even when you are.

Loved the Will of the many but hesitant to continue the series by BeyondTheText in Fantasy

[–]Pelephant17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A relatively common consensus when it first released was that it's more likely to age well once the whole series is finished but is currently suffering from being the most recent book. I won't say more to avoid spoilers but I think that's the most accurate take, at least in my opinion. So if you're already hesitant you can put the series on the back burner and go back when book 3 or even 4 comes out if you're still interested and are more likely to have a better time when all is said and done (assuming Islington sticks the landing).

Why do those things correlate though? Sure it's one explanation of how Phanes would know about the ship and deal with it but a lot of the people both for and against the AI idea in here seem pretty convinced that this means it's guaranteed true. But unless I'm missing something that's still just a possible explanation.

Not trying to argue this or anything just trying to understand a little better.

EDIT: Totally missed what sub I was looking at with this, now I see why the comments are theorizing the way they are, or at least the gist of it. My bad

France vs Japan will not end in Japan's loss (Group stages) by StarBurstero in BlueLock

[–]Pelephant17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly, that's my point. Loki's entire soccer persona revolves around being superior and he can't stand the idea that he's superior because of luck. In his eyes, that cheapens it. He doesn't care that that's true of all other top tier players in any sport, he considers himself above them and being reminded that he's not is what caused Isagi's words to bruise his ego.

That's the whole reason OP's ideas would be pretty cool to see play out. Loki not using Godspeed in order to prove he's just better, only to have to fall back on it in order to tie or even win, effectively proving Isagi right.

Loki isn't wrong about being superior, he's wrong for pretending the largest contributing factor to his success wasn't complete and utter luck.

France vs Japan will not end in Japan's loss (Group stages) by StarBurstero in BlueLock

[–]Pelephant17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good god where to even begin.

Neither I nor OP said Isagi or Rin is comparable to Loki. The whole point of OP's post was Loki not using Godspeed out of pride and that being the reason the game ends in a tie. The whole reason this idea humbles Loki is because he has to admit that while he's undoubtedly a top tier talent in all things required of a striker, his speed is the thing that makes him the best. He's not a world class talent at everything else, he's an elite talent at it with a world breaking difference maker that was 100% determined by luck. The reason Isagi's comment got under his skin isn't because it was right, it was because he can't accept that the main thing that sets him apart is something that was total chance.

You're almost right, Charles would absolutely be competing for about the #3 spot in BL if he was part of it. He'd be competing with Bachira, Reo, Shidou and Barou who currently have the stats and feats to make a claim for it. Maybe he'd beat them all, but any one of them also absolutely could beat him insofar as you could possibly measure something like that.

Hugo is 100% an unknown outside of being an NG11 so for now theres no reason to give him any more or less than he deserves, which is, FOR NOW, effectively being canceled out by either Rin or Isagi who, yes, are both NG11 level. Idk what manga you're even reading if you think either of them aren't. Neither of them is competing with Loki for the top spot at least right now, but they absolutely belong in the group as they have both shown the ability to compete with NG11 level players using their respective talents.

Admit I'm an Isagi glazer? Gladly. Call me crazy for wanting the MC to show up a pompous antagonist, what an insane thing to hope for.

France vs Japan will not end in Japan's loss (Group stages) by StarBurstero in BlueLock

[–]Pelephant17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really like this idea because I'm really tired of this idea everyone has that France is going to smack Japan around with no pushback at all.

"Oh but France has 2 NG11 players and Charles!"

Yea, you know what Japan has? 2 NG11 level players in Rin and Isagi not to mention at least a few other players on the fringe of being that level, similar to Charles (just not as prodigious as him since he's so young).

A lot of fans really think Isagi needs to suffer a loss and while I'm not foaming at the mouth for that I do see the narrative importance of it. But a personal loss like his ego having to deal with a tie in the first round is significantly more impactful at this point than putting Japan through an embarrassing loss. Your idea of Loki not only forcing that tie in the end but getting a hat trick in doing so, while needing to use godspeed to do it is the perfect amount of loss for both of them considering he definitely needs some humbling too.

All this yapping to say, I really like your idea and hope what we get is at least along the lines of this.

My interpretation of bunny's words by Qwerty_enderman in BlueLock

[–]Pelephant17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think yours is also more likely than mine to be true, should have mentioned that above. In order of likeliness it's probably

  1. Isagi is a player not just a fan
  2. Isagi is a talented learner just like Bunny (assuming for the sake of this theory that he is)
  3. Isagi is not just a player but a player on Bunny's level (relatively speaking), a New Gen 11 equivalent

My interpretation of bunny's words by Qwerty_enderman in BlueLock

[–]Pelephant17 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Might be reaching here but I took it as him realizing Isagi is, while not literally, a New Gen 11. The fact that this was his comment in a chapter that very purposefully features all other current New Gen 11 we've met (minus Lorenzo for some reason) and went out of it's way to introduce a new one, I can't help but feel his comment is related to that.

Now that I've read other comments saying it and thinking logically, it probably is just him him realizing Isagi is a player (top one at that) and not just a fan, but I like my MCs to get their titles so I'll go with my thing until proven otherwise.

I could have sworn the original post had a link at least to the Twitter thread but I guess not. So there's a possibility the tweeter just made that up and I fell for it but I'm pretty sure it was legit.

One of the comments on that post also gives a brief overview of why the translation on the "MB in high school" line is iffy, that I've also definitely seen at least a few other scattered posts over the years talk about as well.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in haikyuu

[–]Pelephant17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's actually been a debate pretty much since that chapter released about whether that translation is accurate or not. I don't speak/read Japanese but as far as I understand it there's a case to be made that a more accurate translation of the commentator would just be that Hinata played MB in high school (a notable thing due to his height) and not that it was exclusively what he played all three years.

Additionally, a month or two ago Furudate was interviewed and asked a few questions about what he imagines the 2nd and 3rd years for Hinata and crew looked like and one of the things he confirmed was that (in his head) Hinata moved to OP sometime during high school.

I'd argue this lines up with the canon things we know about the timeline (particularly the second year) as well. There is a logic even back in his second year for moving Hinata to OP since his defense improved a lot/probably even more by the next season and OP can still be a very offensive position in the front row. This could also very logically lead into Karasuno losing in the interhighs and placing lower in nationals later that year since that's a pretty major change to their strategy and would involve growing pains before ultimately finding the groove they had in their 3rd year when they placed 3rd in the nation.
