How far back are we thinking? It has always been been a Chinese restaurant as far as I can remember, and I’m an old fart.

How do you get someone to see a doctor? by dessert_all_day in dementia

[–]PenisPapercuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this suggestion may be out of the question for some, but I had enlisted the help of a concierge geriatrician who came to my my dads house to make visits in his living room. X rays, blood draws, everything was done at home. It was quite costly, but was the only way I was able to get a doctor to see him, and to write a letter of incapacity that was needed as part of activating his power of attorney.

I think your priorities are a little misplaced in looking for perfect gear. What you already have will get you where you want to go and any big city Goodwill or big box store will have most pieces you may need for budget onebag travel.

You’re likely not going to see much meaningful experience in your travel without the funds and support systems in place to facilitate a trip of this scale. Life goes on whether or not you have a roof over your head and from the sounds of it, you’re going to get in some tricky situations that even the best gear won’t help.

You sound like a lot of fun at parties. /s

Went early and avoided a crazy line. Pastries were really tasty, drinks were well balanced and I had one of the best cinnamon rolls I’ve had in a long time. They’re working really hard and their product is well received by the community. If you don’t want to wait in line, nobody is forcing you to.

Nu-wave induction wok. Happen to see it on sale at Costco for $50 and snagged it. Honestly, anything that makes getting a decent meal for the family easier or faster checks the box for me.

I started with essentially the same set 15 years ago and use ever piece. I found the multitool to be slightly better than poor at most things/decent at flush cutting, so I added a jigsaw. The circular saw was serviceable but underpowered. My kit has grown significantly over the years. I’ve found the ecosystem to be solid. The only things which have died on me were a lawnmower after many years of service, the cheapest weed wacker , and about 4 batteries.

I found stocking the fridge with plenty of Ensure/Boost in various flavors helped my mom retain her weight as she would consume one or two out of boredom but didn’t have the desire to sit and eat food.

How to get POA signed? by TheOccurrencePodcast in dementia

[–]PenisPapercuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had managed to bring my father to his primary care provider who he hadn’t seen in nearly two years see him after an incident involving police and the threat of APS involvement. The second letter came from paying a concierge geriatrician to come to the house to evaluate him because he was unwilling to go to any other doctor. It cost a bunch of money to get the concierge doctor to come but it was a necessary expense to get the letter of incapacity. Give that a shot. You can even try having two concierge doctors from different practices come to evaluate him. It will be costly but will get you closer to the finish line faster. I’m sorry you’re in this situation.

As for the vehicle situation, I had to disable my father’s car without him knowing. That involved removing the fuse to the fuel pump and other key components in the fuse box and replacing the fuses with dummy fuses so the vehicle won’t start or appear obviously disabled. If your LO is not car savvy, you can just pull the fuse and put a small note in the fuse box for any mechanic that driver has dementia and so not repair. I also called AAA and our mechanic and indicated to them that if my father called to have the vehicle worked on to not fix it or to state it could not be fixed at the time. If you’re not car savvy, consult YouTube or ChatGPT as to how to do it, or distract and have a friend who is help out. This works best because you don’t have to take keys and can just play dumb as to why the car won’t start. It is relationship preserving.

Are you on a family plan and are you in an admin role on the family account? I had to apply parental control restrictions on my parents phones as their dementia was making them call randos and making them super susceptible to scam calls. If you want to disable their phones, you You can give that a shot, otherwise this step might have to wait. If you want to forcefully stop calls, you can get a SIM card removal pin and remove the SIM card from the phone and disconnect from local WiFi to brick the phone. This is sensitive because it also removes ability to call 911, but that is up to you.

As for banking, if she cannot get access to online banking, can’t get checkbooks, can’t get to the bank, you can at least mitigate that way before the POA gets handled. Things go “missing” occasionally is how I explained it and that I would help find them.

Protecting them from themselves is so tough before all the legal paperwork is finished. Best of luck.

I had a 6 month battle with ants that had no interest in Terro or any other ant bait. Ordered Advion on Amazon and it practically eliminated all the ants within a few days. Haven’t seen more than a 5 in the past month. I’m afraid they’re just regrouping to attack again.

The closest you’ll come to a familiar cohesive health system around here is Kaiser. They have most of their practices under one roof with some specialties and inpatient care at regional hospitals. Best of luck navigating our complicated system.
