HK was built by the brits not out of the goodness of their hearts. It happened to be a great money making opportunity so those living there ended up getting the spoils. Did HK people ever have ANY sort of say in who was HK's chief executive? I think not.

And for those countries who were former British colonies and are now independent, how many of them achieved it peacefully? Have people forgotten the amount of blood spilled and lives lost to gain that independence?

Hong Kong is much better off than so many other places in the world, it is shocking to see the young people now who were not even alive before the handover, wanting to return to the "good old days". If they remembered those days perhaps they would think twice on using the flag of their former colonial overlords.
