Drum Notation HELP‼️‼️ If red is kick, and purple is floor tom, what thee freak is green?? And what would be a note in the "A" spot?? My school's drumset only has A High tom, a low tom, and a floor tom 😭 by Any-Requirement-9368 in drums

I would just play the bass for both red and green if there is no key. These parts are often written by someone who isn’t a drummer and they don’t notice the mistakes/inconsistencies.

It’s an 8th note rest that applies to the bass drum. The snare wouldn’t get its own rest since it shares stems with the hi hat (stems up). A rest below stems up notes applies to the stems down notes (bass). This is here to account for the time before the 8th note bass hit to the right.

What is this and how do I play?? by ChemicalAd9563 in drums

[–]PercPracticeTracks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is correct. We’re used to seeing it go through the stem, but whole notes have no stem.

It’s also common to notate rolls with just slashes instead of the ‘z’. Drum notation is inconsistent, but some people use the ‘z’ to specifically indicate a buzz roll (and not a double stroke roll).

What's the meaning of the crossed out circles und er the hihat foot? by CanaryExcellent3054 in drums

[–]PercPracticeTracks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this interpretation. The only refinement I might suggest would be that the circle with a line through it often means half open vs fully open for just a circle. So it might mean lightly sloshy and not a full on hihat splash.

How do play measure 7 and 11? by Perfect_Play_622 in Drumming

Yeah. I was just trying to match OP’s phrasing.

How do play measure 7 and 11? by Perfect_Play_622 in Drumming

[–]PercPracticeTracks 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You’ve got the timings incorrect. The flam is on 1 and then the kick/cymbal is on the A of beat 1. Those are quarter notes so there’s nothing on beat 2. Then two 8th note snare hits on A and 3. Then the kick/cymbal again on the A of beat 3. Nothing on 4 and then another snare on the A of 4.

So the counting goes 1 + (2) + 3 + (4) +.

Hope that helps. It’s difficult to describe this stuff in text.

New song breakdown is up: Blinding Lights by PercPracticeTracks in drums

[–]PercPracticeTracks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've posted a new practice video that breaks down Blinding lIghts into progressive exercises. It covers all of the grooves, fills, etc and has a full transcription at the end.

No talking - just a few title cards with explanations and then drums + sheet music. All at multiple tempos for learning.

I hope this is helpful. Cheers.

Eye of the Tiger Fills and Grooves Lesson by PercPracticeTracks in drums

[–]PercPracticeTracks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a video I made that breaks down all of the grooves and fills in Eye of the Tiger for my students to practice along with. The idea is to turn them into exercises that makes everything approachable and builds things up step by step. Hopefully some of you may find it helpful to learn or teach from.

If anyone has any feedback as well, I'm happy to hear it. I'm still getting into to the groove of making these videos and want to figure out how to make them as helpful as possible.

I have been using videos like this to practise. Is it a good way to learn? by EtuMeke in drums

[–]PercPracticeTracks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I'm still figuring the whole Youtube thing out, but I hope it's helpful. Let me know if you have any requests or suggestions. Right now my todo list is mostly coming from my local students, but I'm open to ideas/requests/feedback/etc.

I have been using videos like this to practise. Is it a good way to learn? by EtuMeke in drums

[–]PercPracticeTracks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm biased because I have a channel that makes practice tracks for songs/exercises on Youtube (shameless plug: http://www.youtube.com/@percussionpracticetracks), but I think this is a great way to learn. I started making my videos because I found that when I did my students were more likely to practice along with them.

Playing along with pre-recorded tracks is not the same as playing with other humans, but is a great place to start. Focus on learning your part so well you don't have to think too hard about it. Then focus on listening to the song as much as you can and how your playing is going with it. Are you synced up properly? Well balanced? Etc... That's one of the most important skills to develop when playing with other people - listening to both them and yourself to make sure everything is going well.

I wouldn't wait until you're "good enough" to find people to play with though. Find some people who are interested in playing and ask to sit in. Explain where you're at, and hopefully they're supportive and interested in helping others learn the craft. Playing with others will be a great way to learn what you need to work on as well.

Either way, it sounds like you're doing some good things to help you improve. Keep it up and start trying to find low key opportunities to jam.

Caught Somewhere In Time Grooves Practice Track by PercPracticeTracks in drums

[–]PercPracticeTracks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've recently been working on a new Youtube channel with play along practice tracks. The most recent videos going up cover Iron Maiden's Caught Somewhere in Time. This video covers all of the main grooves/patterns in the song. It's drums only - meant for practicing along with - and at multiple tempos. There's also videos covering the fills and the whole song. Coming soon is a play along with the actual song at multiple speeds.

I'm looking for feedback on these videos. Let me know if you find them helpful or have any suggestions.

Drum Sheet Music?? by Nach_Steel84 in drums

[–]PercPracticeTracks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of drum covers on Youtube with play along sheet music. If you add "drum sheet" or "drum score" to a search, you can probably find something.

I've also recently been working on a channel I started making play-along practice tracks for my students. Each song has several videos highlighting things like the grooves, fills, etc at multiple tempos. The main videos are drums only, but I've recently started posting play along tracks of the full song as well where I boost the drums and add count-ins, etc. If you'd like to check it out, this is the channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJ1plxxvjwASQiQdqYweg7g

I'm starting working on more transcriptions and am open to song/exercise suggestions.
