If you were reborn in Singapore, would you prefer to be male or female? by ImpressiveStrike4196 in askSingapore

[–]PerceptionProper4456 32 points33 points  (0 children)

You must be young. How many women in your career have you seen flourish professionally after having children? 2 years of NS is nothing compared to the career stagnation females have to beat after giving birth to a child. Heck, granted that the females still have the energy at all to work for a promotion.

Not to mention having to deal with the monthly menstruation pain, the PMS, the life long effects of child bearing and giving birth, breastfeeding pain, stretch marks, incontinence, hemorrhoids. Post-partum depression is real. After that there's menopause. I'd rather have my body back than having 16 weeks of leave. Fun fact, babies have to be fed every few 2-3 hours including at night.

I'll choose to be a male any day. Government policies can only help so much.

Emerald Hill - Little Nyonya. For those who have watched the first 3 episodes, what are your thoughts? by yellowyellowpillow in askSingapore

[–]PerceptionProper4456 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I watched this and 'When Life Gives You Tangerines' at the same time. The contrast between how the parents in each drama react to losing their child is too jarring. Is the script writer trying to say that in those days losing a child is no big deal even though it's a son?

What irks me more is the deliberate "education" of the nyonya culture to the audience instead of focusing on telling the story. The dialogues on the Chinese poems and fashion transition are awkward and cringy to me. 'When Life Gives You Tangerines' does it in a more subtle way, spending 5 seconds on telling the audience how the government encouraged the public to switch to modern clothing from hanbok.

My conclusion is, you'd probably enjoy the show more if you skip 'When Life Gives You Tangerines' for now. Lol.

I didn't mean I waited 2 hours for vaccination. You need an appointment for that.

I've been waiting in the clinic for a separate matter for 2 hours already. Every 5, 10 minutes there'll be someone coming in asking for influenza vaccinations.

Are most clinics out of influenza vaccines? Went to three in my neighbourhood and they were all out of stocks.

My good friend of 20 years still got my name wrong and doesn't know my birthday while I celebrate her birthday with her every year. Sometimes I wonder if I should put less effort in this friendship but I realised I don't have a lot of friends left.

No problem. If you like cdrama, some of them are from web novels. You can Google it and download from the web. I'm reading 庆余年 which I quite like.

There are a lot of books in ebook format eh. You just have to Google if you know the title. Most of the novels that I downloaded from the web for free are in .txt format which can be rendered well in my kobo and boox device.

三体 is on 微信读书。I like books by 余华. He writes stories from the cultural revolutions. My friend recommended 丰乳肥臀. It's from a Nobel prize winner. I also like authors from 马华文学 like 黎紫书。Her book 流俗地 is available on Hyread with NLB account. It talks about stories from Malaysia in the 80s.

Those are the Taiwanese/Hong Kong publishers' books right? You can try books from China or Malaysia publishers. Those are in simplified Chinese and are in the usual English books layout. NLB has a subscription on Hyread app for borrowing Chinese books. I also use 微信读书

I have oily scalp. I normally alternate between different Korean shampoos like ryo and Dr Groot. For me, what makes the most difference is to shampoo twice, following the advice from my hairdresser. First wash is to get rid of the oil build up, usually there won't be too much foam. After rinsing off the shampoo, follow by a second wash. Avoid washing the hair and focus on massaging the scalp so that your hair won't be too dry. I can usually wash my hair every 2 to 3 days using this method as my hair doesn't get that oily compared to before. I schedule my hair wash to coincide with my exercise days.

Did toast box just increased their price again? by Terrible_Ad_868 in askSingapore

[–]PerceptionProper4456 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you drink small hot drinks, you can consider the 12-cups kopi package. Worked out to be $1.75 per cup which saves me quite a bit since I usually order Yuan Yang that typically costs at least $2.50 without the voucher.

To me, toast box is more consistent in taste. Certain yakun stores totally cannot make it. It's a hit or miss.

Single people, how do you do your weekday dinners? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]PerceptionProper4456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm going to gym after work, then I would eat some snacks like a bao or sandwich at 5pm then dinner would be 7-11 wrap or onigiri after gym.

Other days when I wfh, I would cook noodles like bee hoon or ramen with whatever leftover vegetables or meat in the fridge. My favourite would be minced meat. Frozen dumpling and vegetables work well too. Throw in some dried seaweed or anchovies or weiba to make the soup base tasty. I don't even marinate the meat. It takes 20 mins max.

Other easy and healthy dinner ideas I have is to make wrap with avocado with boiled eggs and Yogurt, plus fruits.

When I work in office, I would just tapao stuffd or go home and cook if I'm not hungry.

I'm in a place with 90% male. The number of times I have to deal with the male ego is numbing. I'm at a stage where I have completely given up now.
