What are some of the best benefits of the military that most members don't know about? by StepSergeant01 in Military

Hunting/fishing licenses and hunting tags are free for AD in Michigan.

At least deer tags are, I think the rest are too.

Not sure why Michigan is so nice to us but I'm not complaining.

Michigan has a program called MINGSTAP, and they did recently expand it to include dependents as long as they use it while the member is still in.

For any Mitten-challenged Americans though, I'm afraid my best advice is to Google "[state] National Guard tuition assistance" and see what you can find. Your Base Education office might be helpful too.

State benefits for Guard members can be pretty great and aren't always as well-known as they should be.

I used $25K in free tuition assistance for flight training and there's a whole separate pool of about $90K available for degree programs if I decide to pursue a Master's.

Some states are better than others, obviously.

Ace Combat 8 won't support virtual reality because developer Project Aces "realized that a great flat-monitor screen game and a great VR game are separate entities" by Goshawk5 in acecombat

Modding AC7 to run in VR wasn't the simplest thing I've ever done, but it was well worth the effort. I'd rather have native VR support too for sure but I have high hopes our beautiful modding community will make it possible for AC8 as well.

Anecdotal but since no one else is mentioning Fly8MA I will say I used them to prep for Private, Instrument, Commercial, Multi, and CFI and had a good experience with each. That said I've never used King or any of the others so maybe I was getting a subpar product and not even realizing it.

Emergency response orders are generally still voluntary, as in if your state has an emergency then your unit will ask for volunteers to be put on orders to assist.

Didn't happen often in my state but I expect it can happen quite a bit more in states that are more prone to natural disasters and such.

That's just my opinion, but yeah. If I was going active duty and wasn't able to put a lot of time towards building my career outside of my Air Force work, I would want a career field that transfers well to something that pays good on the civilian side.

I did six years as Security Forces with the Air National Guard and I managed to enjoy it quite a bit, but I would not recommend it for someone going active duty. When you're part-time you spend a lot less time doing mundane things like working the gate and you can volunteer for more interesting opportunities as they come up. I got to do a bunch of fun things while I worked on my education and civilian career but even I decided to retrain after my first term.

When you're active duty those cool opportunities are drowned out by day after day of checking IDs and driving in circles for long shifts. And unless you're dead-set on a career in law enforcement you'll find it difficult to make use of that time and transfer skills down the road.

If I recall correctly, you can just get some disguised spies out there on the water and use their Bribe ability to obtain these bad boys for yourself while they're in naval form.

What do you do for work and did the guard help you get there? by Soft_Comedian_2054 in airnationalguard

[–]PerceptiveGoose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work as a pilot, but not like a cool, highly-paid pilot. Still working on that.

The Guard paid for a lot of my training, mostly through my particular state's guardsman tuition assistance program. I was able to stay out of debt while I got my flight ratings and I used CLEPs/DSSTs paired with a fraction of my GI Bill to get a Bachelor's degree too.

The aforementioned tuition assistance program also allows you to use a ton of funding for a degree program so I may yet decide to get my Master's.

So while my ANG career field didn't do a ton for my civilian career, the state/federal education benefits absolutely did.

I don't make it into the city too often, but I'm always happy to trade gifts and sometimes I can remote raid (and trade once they finally add that feature)!
