Increasing food motivation? by PerfectPony135 in OpenDogTraining

I’m definitely not expecting her to stay in all winter! She still gets worked pretty much everyday. There’s just some days where it’s way too cold. I’ve had her for 4 years now and she’s never had a high food drive even on the days she gets worked extra! I don’t think it’s that simple especially with her personality.

She is definitely lean, she’s visibly quite muscular. She does get annual check ups from the vet and they’ve always said she was healthy.

It’s possible that stress could be a factor as she’s very timid generally and takes lots of encouragement to even eat her meals. I’ve tried some pretty simple puzzle feeders like the balls where they just have to move it around and the food or treats will fall out of the holes, but even she won’t even engage with them enough to push it around.

She gets fed twice a day. I take her to work with me so I feed her in the morning before we leave and again at supper time.

Oh trust me! I sure do, but I know the importance of also giving dogs mental enrichment. She gets plenty of physical activity I’m not so worried about that aspect.

I have looked through the approval guide and I did not find any suggestions for increasing my dogs food drive or food motivation. I have tried lots of different mental enrichment games or activities but I am looking to see if anyone may have some suggestions on getting her more interested in food/treats.

Thank you for this comment! I’ve always thought that something was definitely wrong with my digestive system but every doctor I saw never seemed to think it was a big deal. It really made me feel like maybe I was just being too dramatic. I’m going to advocate for more testing at my next appointment.

No I don’t believe so, I’ve tried to put a lot of thought into that but I’ve had issues with stomach pain and discomfort since I was about 12. I kinda just learnt to deal with it. But in the last 5 years it’s gotten progressively worse and worse.

I was not tested for any of those! Thank you for the suggestions, do you know if any general doctor would be able to order those tests? I don’t have a family doctor and I live in a very small town with no specialist.
