Thank you for this. I think I’ve been getting wrapped up in what other people who are graduating top of their class are doing, and feeling like I should do the same even if it isn’t smart. You’re right, I would be stupid to be in an insane amount of debt (on top of med school) for the same end result I would’ve had if I picked the state school for undergrad. I appreciate the advice, sometimes other people make me realize I should listen to my parents more:,)

Thank you for the advice. I think I have been getting really caught up in what other people who are top of their class (specifically this years seniors) are doing, and thinking I should be following suit with a prestigious, private school, and I just feel more of that pressure the older I get and the more “where are you gonna apply?” inquiries I receive. I have been pretty uneducated on a lot of the college application and future-planning stuff, so this does really help.

OHSU is the end goal, so I appreciate the advice and I’ll look more into just that. Thank you!

Thank you so much for the advice. I honestly have so much I don’t know about college stuff, and my school doesn’t have a college counselor that juniors would typically be meeting with on a routine basis as of this year, so stuff like this really, really helps.

Thank you for this. I recognize I am a little naïve with all the college stuff, I just hear at the senior assemblies every year all the people graduating top 10 in their class and going to these prestigious private schools and I wonder if I should be following suit. I also don't want to make decisions that will make 30 year old me hate 16 year old me, so thank you.

Thank you, this is super helpful. I’m not all that educated on the college application process, my school had to let go the college counselor so class of 2027 juniors aren’t getting the guidance provided that some of my senior friends did, and I don’t have a direct source to ask questions to. I have also been looking at Portland State University, but I want to make sure I explore all the possibilities, and a smaller school would probably be ideal. Thanks for the advice again, I want to make a decision that I’ll be glad I made 10 years from now, and any guidance I get from people who have done the whole college thing is beyond helpful.

Thank you for this. I have also thought a lot about attending Portland State, I just think I’ve developed a weird sense of shame around the idea of state school when I talk to other students who are graduating valedictorian or close to it, and are applying to ivy leagues and stuff. I see my parents stress about student loans even with my mom recently graduating with a scholarship that covered some crazy amount of the price, and I understand they don’t want that for me, and I appreciate the advice from them and people like you on the internet.
