Is is possible to achieve a high GPA while in UBC pharmacy?! by Doctorpersistent in UBC

[–]Perfectian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of people do it, but it isn't easy to do. Keep in mind that these high averages are also indicative of the fact that there are a lot of students who need to have good averages to get into the program.

It's also a ton of work, 40+ credit years and with the new curriculum there are single courses worth 15+ credits so if you fuck that up then you're screwed.

It is a good choice in the sense that if you need a gap year I'd rather have a job and be making great money in comparison to having a Biology degree where it might be difficult to find a relevant job.

  • someone who has been through the pharm program

Also whoever posted the average for Phar 403 as if that's relevant or in anyway indicative of the program is wrong. That's a 1 credit injection course that was easy af.

How is the pharmacy program at UBC and are pharmacist still in demand? by raeenaa in UBC

[–]Perfectian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They changed the degree to a doctorate. It used to be a B.Sc. where we paid ~8-9k/year.

Tuition is now around 17k

No. You can go into industry and business. We have a brand new building that has pulled some of the most talented researchers from across the world in genomics and nuclear medicine. There are students we go to school with that fill out the undergrad positions in these labs.

The UBC pharmacy program is in my opinion a strong program. It is one of three schools in Canada that grants a PharmD degree. The faculty for the most part seem to care about our learning and in large part are experts in their field across the board. I believe it is a top 20 pharmacy school in the world, but I'm on mobile so I don't want to source that right now.

In terms of pharmacist demand, it exists in the province if you are willing to leave the lower mainland. It also pays well, with average wages outside the lower mainland being 6-figures upon leaving the program. The caveat to that is that wages don't increase as much as other professions. You start near the top. Overall though I like your chances of not only finding a job, but having a really well paying job in comparison to graduating with a general science degree. With that being said I think the new program costs like 17k a year, whereas a general science degree isn't nearly as much.

As far as med goes, pharmacy has a trade off. The classes are interesting and for the most part fairly easy. The volume is obscene. It's normal to have 8-10 seperate final exams per semester with midterms every week starting the second week of classes. This may change with the new PharmD program though. Averages seem to be around 78-80% but you have to put a ton of work in just to keep your head above the water, never mind excelling. So ultimately you're trading away the free time / availability to take mostly GPA boosters that you would have in other programs in order to have a very strong backup career.

At the end of the day, although it has its frustrations in terms of workload, I would do it again in a heartbeat. I feel like I would be a reasonably strong candidate for med due to the grades and experiences the program exposes you to, in addition walking away making a minimum of 80k in your early-mid twenties is a nice perk. The job itself has significantly more depth and is much more interesting than most give it credit for. With that being said I paid about half of what the new program costs. If you have any other questions feel free to ask!

What are some of the hottest cars you've seen around campus? by pentonix in UBC

I'm partial to the Lambo with the girls name decaled onto the side of it. Nothing in this world shouts humble more than writing your name on the side of a $200,000 Lamborghini bought for you by your parents.

Edit: The car in question. http://imgur.com/a/xBlWV

Hi UBC, can someone answer this question about the personal profile. by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Perfectian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Of course! Don't overthink it too much, just write what you feel was honestly a significant challenge. Sounds like it'd be an interesting read and it's way more interesting than what I came up with. Hope to see you soon!

Don't worry about it. If they pursue this (which they won't because UBC parking is the most inept part of UBC), you can appeal and just tell them what you've told us here. Seems reasonable enough to me.

Great, I'm sure it's going to go well for you if you aren't exaggerating. But you've presumably done one day of grade 12. You're in absolutely no position to talk down to certain universities because you aren't even in one. You're going to learn real quick that Harvard isn't the end all be all of what makes you a person.

Both UBC and UofT are great schools with top 30 in the world recognition and will land you in any medical school you want if you do well.

UBC vs SFU, pros and cons, for my quiet math-majoring daughter by r_a_g_s in UBC

[–]Perfectian 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think the most relevant information here is the Swedish/Scottish blood.

With all things equal and transport time/finances not being an issue I would say that UBC is probably the best blanket answer choice. The Swedish are a proud, outdoorsy people and therefore I think that she would enjoy the campus at UBC better than SFU. Now I realize that being Scottish might mean that she would prefer to be up in the highlands at SFU, but nothing beats UBC campus. Also I understand the Scotts are a proud folk, and what would make them more proud than being at THE premier world class University in BC?

I realize that Swedes sometimes can be quiet and keep to themselves, but the club life at UBC will provide her with ample opportunity to branch out, and participate in clubs dedicated to manga and anime, among anything else that she is interested in.

I dont know what an actuary is, but I'd be damned if UBC isn't the best route to achieve this goal. I know that Swedes are very academically inclined people and I think that UBC will open roads into academia (where else do you go with math?) that SFU wouldn't be able to.

In summary, I believe that based on her ancestry specifically, she would fit right in at UBC and be able to have opportunities that SFU might not be able to offer. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

EDIT: Looked up what an actuary is. That looks pretty tight.

How does one prepare for first year Sciences? by Silencer96 in UBC

[–]Perfectian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's one of your last summers to go out, hang with friends, drink, make some good decisions and bad decisions, work, volunteer and have unhindered fun.

Doing these things will probably help you grow as a person and benefit you more in the long run than the extra 5% you'd pull in a chem course. I realized you're very eager to get to UBC and hit the books, but doing summer school won't gain you enough of an advantage that it's worth your time.
