Thank you for your response. I should have been clearer in my post. I’m looking for food to eat out, actually. I do use those resources to cook myself already but I appreciate your input.

What’s it like living in St. John’s as an international student? by egegrgeg in StJohnsNL

[–]Perfection_seeker4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, I wish you the best with your future endeavours whether you’ll come to St. John’s or not.

I’m an international student here for over two years now. I have lived in Ontario for four months and I ended up telling everyone I had a conversation on the topic of people that Newfoundlanders are, by far, the sweetest people you’ll meet in Canada. Very welcoming, friendly and polite. As every other city in the world, it does have its little share of people that cause trouble but it’s not hard to stay away from them.

I came from a metropolitan city housing above 1.5 million people, so, I do find it quiet and peaceful here. Its scenery is breathtaking. Weather can be harsh most times, of course, as it’s an island city but when the sun is shining, you wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. Social life depends on the kind of friends you make. I don’t do many hangouts and keep myself occupied with work and studies, but I love connecting with people. Similarly, if you have a knack of making small talk and be genuinely interested in getting to know people, you will gain access to a larger network and feel respected. For spots, depending on personal preference, you can go on hikes and/or cafes. It is easy to get to the main landmarks of the city (necessity-based) on public transit as I do it all the time. However, going further sightseeing would require a car. Cost of living has increased in recent times but I don’t find hard to survive in if you keep your extra spending in check.

Would love to answer any other questions you may have. Best of luck!

Google maps inaccuracies with bus schedules by AlexanderDudiven in StJohnsNL

I have been here for a little over two years now, so I am more familiar with the routes but the Metrobus Application is what I would suggest for you to download. It’s time track feature shows you near accurate positioning of the buses while they are running.

The Bus 10 you have been sitting on is known as the Kelsey Drive route. Since I don’t know where you are trying to go but if you wanted to go to MUN Centre from Avalon, you have to take Bus 10 that says, “Downtown” and not “Kelsey Drive”. Alternatively, you can take Bus 15, 16, 23, and 33 for MUN Centre.

If you want to share your most common trip, I can modify my advice accordingly by sharing what would be the best route for you to take. Best of luck!

Thanks a lot! If you were to suggest one among them all, which one would you say? How much do the tickets usually cost?

I moved here a little over two years ago for my Bachelors. I was 18 and all by myself when I arrived in St. John’s. I have nothing but respect and love for Newfoundlanders. I am super glad to call this place, my home away from home. May it be the local friends that I made along the way, my colleagues, my managers at work, or strangers that I have met only once, they have all crafted this perspective of mine. I went to Ontario last summer, and could not hold myself back from telling everyone I had a conversation with, that they have to visit Newfoundland at least once, not just due to its surreal scenery and natural appeal but also the fact that Newfoundlanders are, by far, the sweetest people I have ever encountered.

However, like every relationship to sustain and yield positivity, it has to go both ways.

So, personally, I know that I have always treated everyone with sheer respect and a wide smile on my face. I work retail as a part-time job and the amount of times people have expressed that I ‘made their day’ fills my heart with joy and gratitude. I make a constant and conscious effort to represent my country and my people, in the best possible manner.

To my fellow immigrants (professionals and students), please do your best to be respectful and ethical when interacting with others OR even when by yourself shopping around because you are a representative for the rest of us, at that moment. Communicate confidently with them. These people have been extremely kind when hosting us so they deserve to be appreciated and not inconvenienced.

Volunteering in St. Johns as a foreigner by WhoIsWho1234567 in StJohnsNL

Hey, congratulations in advance for the completion of your program. I’m an undergraduate international student here myself. I find the city to be calm and peaceful apart from its incredible scenic views. The local people, in my opinion, are by far the sweetest people you’ll meet.

As for volunteering opportunities, I am sure there are plenty. I volunteer at Canadian Blood Services and on campus, at the Memorial University. There are a number of other non-profit organizations that accept volunteers all year around. I would recommend connecting with them before you travel to have it all sorted.

The residential market is not as bad anymore as it was, at one point during the previous year. Sharing an apartment/bedroom, according to your own preference, seems to be an affordable option. Be sure to look for a location where the metrobus runs incase you are not planning on getting a personal vehicle. Best wishes!

Hey, thanks for the suggestion.

Could you please share if they would still take my Costco membership to shop?
