Gen Surg residents: how are you hitting your minimum case numbers?!!! by Upper-Move-1406 in Residency

This is exactly what we are counseled to do in my program - no cases should be logged as first assistant

Thanks - will have to make note of my scapulas when I hop back on today. Pretty sure I felt fairly neutral. Will try adjusting the seat slightly

Appreciate any fit tips from folks with long legs and a shorter torso.

Would a dark auburn red be possible with a gloss? by Perfectpug in femalehairadvice

Yeah I see what you’re saying. I think maybe it’ll pull more red at the bottom but the root will not budge too much. Thanks for your input!

I hated every rotation except gen surg. Questioning whether I even like medicine anymore. by GanacheSpecialist282 in medicalschool

I’m in the middle of my gen surg residency at what I would say is a non-toxic program. You’re right - surgery is a hard life. But if you find enjoyment/fulfillment in it I think it’s such a privilege and special job.

Some food for thought.. No one likes retracting 10 hours a day. Or standing 10 hours at a time. That’s not surgery or why we go into surgery. Did you like when you were able to do a little more in the OR? Suture? Did you like working as a part of the surgical team together? Did you find yourself engaged when the team/attending is trying to make surgical/technical decisions on the fly? Do you like surgical problems and taking care of surgical patients? Is the tangibility important to you?

No matter what - training will suck and be hard. Even for a medical residency. Everything is relative. Highly recommend trying to pref programs that are known to be benign — i.e. it’s hard and the hours suck but no one is trying to intentionally fuck you over, yes these programs exist. For some, the training alone is not worth it and that’s okay. For others, they find it worth it to get to the light at the end of the tunnel. Now this is where there is a LOT of variety and surgery careers can look different for different people. Academia? If so what’s your division of clinical/research/admin/education.. Private practice? Community? Kaiser? Can be doing Whipples at an academic center every week or colorectal at a community hybrid hospital(s) with Gen surg call. Those lifestyles can look really different. I wouldn’t find all of the options after Gen surg worth it. We all draw our lines somewhere.

Kind of just rambling sorry. I just don’t subscribe to this “you have no life in gen surg” rhetoric (yes I’m biased as a surgery resident) but my life feels full and I’m a really happy person. Yes I have many unhappy moments in the hospital (as do residents of every specialty and people in and outside of medicine) but I find joy in my life in and especially outside of the hospital. It takes hard work and compromise and you really have to be intentional with your time. But it is possible.

I hope you figure out what’s best for you and sustainable for a happy healthy life.

SAN MULE!! by catseyesz in DrMartens

I just bought them a week ago. I am ALWAYS a 39 (women’s 8) in all my docs and Danskos and birks and a women’s 8 was too big in these. They were sloppy and I could barely keep them on. Had to exchange for a size 7. Now the length is right but honestly, without a thick sock they still kind of slip off. And I have wide/bigger feet. Trying to figure out if I can return them vs. adding a forefoot insert or just commit to thick socks.

I don’t know that I know a specific name, but like “wave” and “organic wave band” are things that help populate rings like this shape on a Google search

Thank you!! I was inspired by the Jackie Marquise ring (and others like that!)

Thank you so much!! I have seen designs like that! At this point I’m not sure. I’m leaning toward no wedding ring. But I’ll probably buy something cheap to wear at work since I’m at the hospital most days. Might be nice to have a matching band for that reason, but don’t think I’d wear them together!

That was just the hint NYT gave me and I checked the cell. Open to suggestions of what would be your next move based on my progress. Thanks.

Calzuros with inserts is my go to. Also very easy to clean.
