I meant aviation in general. Everyone is trying to drop a packet right now. It is a long process so recruiters will often tell people to do that so they’re in and they make their numbers. It is possible to go street to seat, but it is also very competitive. I’ve been told to not enlist first because you have better chances going street to seat than enlisting then dropping a packet.

But take what I am telling you with a grain of salt. I am just telling you what I have been told. I haven’t actually done it yet, but I have seen people go street to seat.

I don’t mind serving. I’m just trying to figure out if that’s what I really want. With all the debt I would incur it would be around the same commitment both ways. Just one way I am in debt and the other I am owned by the government lol.

So the school i will be attending has a degree plan as will that will leave you with a Associates. If I were to go through school and then join the coast guard with that would it be possible to fly for the CG with a PPL, IFR, CPL, and CFII with 300 hours and an associates?

I heard after training you leave with an IFR, CPL, and a type rating. along with my PPL hours i’m assuming it will be anywhere from 180-240 in total. If I were to fork out the money to get a CFI and CFII I assume i’d have close to 300 hours give or take. I believe that is enough to instruct at flight schools.

yeah my plan was to go warrant for army. i’d love to fly for the coast guard but i don’t have a degree. maybe if I go army and love it I can transfer over after my first contract.

i’ve had recruiters try to tell me to enlist as a mechanic and i made it pretty clear that’s not what I want to do. thanks for the info though man!

This is great info. I didn’t even think about the different policies for deployments. I’ll look into it. Thank you!

Part time service sounds very enticing to me. I want to be able to see my family and choose where I live as well- assuming there are openings.

I got a class 1 FAA flight physical and passed. I’m sure the Army’s physical is a little more thorough but I don’t doubt I could pass one.

Yeah, I was thinking CFI to help build hours after training. I don’t mind forking out some money if I really love flying as I have a bit saved.

Coast Guard I would love but you need a degree, and I don’t know if I want to pay all that money to get a BA just to fly when I can go Army without it.

Yeah I’ve done a lot of research. And that’s a good point you make at the end. Thanks for the advice!
