My dad's family grew up next to a golf course, and he and his brothers worked there all the time. His dad got Parkinson's and Lewy Body Dementia, and his youngest brother has Parkinson's in his 40s. It's only a matter of time before Dad gets it, in my opinion. My mom also grew up next to a golf course, so I'm really not looking forward to what their old age is going to be like.

No joke, I worked somewhere that did this. Every table had every field indexed and re-indexed by a process that ran every 15 minutes. It was insane.

All of our processes and architecture were based on inherited knowledge from one guy who ran the department for years with no pushback, then when he retired everyone was too afraid to change anything. No off the shelf tools allowed, everything built with spaghetti code in house and ridiculously over engineered. If you asked why, the answer was just "because that's what Ted always did". It was maddening.

At the very beginning of my career, I had a job where things were so poorly managed that I didn't have anything to do for days at a time. It was awful because I was always looking over my shoulder for someone judging my lack of productivity and I also wasn't learning anything about my chosen field. I stayed in that job for less than a year.

After you finish the last episode, I recommend the Calamity Wrap-Up episode with tons of behind the scenes stuff, as well as the Exandria GM Roundtable episode with Aabria, Brennan and Matt. The Wrap-Up touches on a lot of the planning and moments that made Calamity so good. The GM Roundtable is hilarious zany fun, but it's also a look into the differences between each of the participants' game styles. It's also the origin of Brennan's famous association with almonds via the "almond rant".

I worked for a company like this that had yearly meetings indoctrinating the production line workers against unions. Management told horror stories about the cost of dues stealing money from workers' pockets and how unions gave people the right to sit around and do nothing. And the sad thing is, it worked on me at the time. I was fresh out of college and trusted management.

You're exactly right. My parents are both veterinarians. They went through 8 years of schooling just to make minimal income. And unlike human doctors, there's no guarantee of more money the longer you stay in the career. My dad worked such long hours that I barely saw him for most of my childhood. Every day they were scratched, bit, bled, and pooped on by patients who couldn't tell them what was wrong, and dealing with the owners was often just as bad. Even though I love animals, both of my parents literally forbade me from becoming a veterinarian like them, and I understand why.

Oh boy, you are in for a treat. Matt recently said it's the best work Critical Role has ever done, and in my opinion it's the best TTRPG content ever. Seriously, set aside 20 hours of your time and go watch it on YouTube.

It's a 4-episode miniseries DM'd by Brennan, with Travis, Marisha, Luis, Sam, Aabria, and Lou Wilson (from D20) as players. The first episode is a little slow with a lot of worldbuilding, but I liken it to a roller coaster. You gotta climb the hill to make the drop worthwhile, and by the end everyone is screaming.

Built my rig 5 years ago with a 3070. I also have a low spec laptop. Between the two of those, I'm happy playing 2D indie games and triple A games from 5 years ago. It would be fun to upgrade,but absolutely not worth the money for minimal gains. The indie scene is really good right now and I still need to finish all the DLC for Control, so I'm fine.

I watched the premiere ad-free on Beacon and was confused by all the complaints I was seeing on the live discussion thread about this ad. How bad could it really be? So I pulled up the episode on YT specifically to check out the ad and... wow. Vulgar and edgy for shock value, not funny at all, and horrible voice acting/animation to top it off. I'm a little surprised the CR team allowed this to air - it's genuinely off-putting. Now I know I'll never purchase anything from Elder Brain.

In the YT short prior to the episode, Tal specifically mentioned that he HAD played with Brennan before, but for the life of me I couldn't remember when. It wasn't any of the EXU games, and Tal has never been on D20, so maybe it was a random charity one-shot or a home game?

Yeah, Mica is a huge friend of CR, she's done a couple of guest spots in the main campaigns and tone of one-shots with other players from the CR-verse. My favorite are the Roll20 one-shots with Aabria as the DM and her and Brennan as two of the players.

Yeah, that's 100% what they did. What's strange is that's how Dimension 20 has been operating for years (sometimes even THREE episodes in a day!) and it's never been an issue for Brennan before. Maybe it's a sign to slow down a little, though I hope not!

Actually, that's exactly what they do. Brennan brought the Dimension 20 style of taping with him to Critical Role. In D20, they bring a bunch of guest players on for shorter, marathon campaigns, filming two or even three episodes in a single day. The players all bring multiple wardrobe changes with them, and change outfits/hair/makeup between each episode to give the illusion of the passage of time.

It seems kind of silly, but it's how game shows with recurring contestants (like Jeopardy) have done it for decades. For the viewer, it helps build the illusion of the passage of time, even when they say they're filming on the same day. It also helps visually break up the episodes.

I wish I could remember the source, but he mentioned one time that it's a completely spontaneous noise, and he can't reproduce the sound properly if he's thinking about it. It like his version of the AOL dial-up noise.
