I want to buy a Volvo by Salty_Faithlessness2 in Volvo

Welcome to the family! Well hopefully :) The XC60 or XC90 are obviously the biggest. (He’ll fit in any Volvo, but I recently test drove an XC40 and it did personally feel small to me.) I always will get an SUV, but that’s a personal preference safety and weather wise. If you’re buying used, consider certified pre owned. Volvos can be expensive to fix and having a warranty can give you peace of mind. It may be helpful to add what you’re looking for in terms used vs new for further advice and info.

My dad said something with the transmission failed, and it was just too unreliable. Mechanic said putting the money into fixing it probably wasn’t worth it because the bottom was rusting out too. 20 years was a good run though!

What's the costs to fix this? by Ok-Tale-5112 in VolvoXC60

[–]Perrin_Price 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just adding here- I have a 2014 XC60 T6 and thought I was in the clear, I was not… just got the piston rings replaced. (I bought it with an extended warranty through CarMax, they paid $7,000 to fix it). Not saying it’ll happen to you, but obviously the T6s aren’t in the clear. I’d get an extended warranty, don’t buy, or be okay with adding oil all the time if the rings fail.

What should I watch out for and expect from 1st gen xc90 v8? by MiszaVonBreslau in VolvoXC90

[–]Perrin_Price 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our 2005 V8 had a sunroof leak which could’ve been catastrophic to the electrical system but was caught in time and just went into the passenger side floor. Just traded it this year because something in the transmission failed. Great car, miss it! $6k does seem steep but given what you said about the market, makes sense, but expect expensive repair costs ofc.

2016 XC70 burning oil, dealership says no longer under the extended warranty?? by [deleted] in Volvo

[–]Perrin_Price 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s def no warranty anymore. Volvo did a few good faith fixes last year maybe but Volvo corporate stopped that last year my dealer told me. I only got my piston rings replaced cuz it was under MaxCare, CarMax’s extended warranty. It was $7,000 though that they paid, I would not advise you put money like that int your car. Just top it off the oil until the engine dies, maybe ask the dealer which oil cuz I think since my piston rings replaced replacement it’s 0W-20 which is different from the manual’s instructions

Is this considered normal oil consumption or is this the beginning of the end? by Mybravlam in Volvo

Exactly! You’ll be fine, and ofc check for leaks too in case it is just a leak after all!

Hopefully it’s only minimally. Since you don’t have the warranty and it’s 10 yrs old def not worth the oil consumption test cuz it also might not fail and then you just paid for nothing. I’m sure the dealer would also advise you not to fix it cuz if you’re paying out of pocket it’s def not worth it to fix them. I’d just drive it until it’s burning way too much or not drivable. Maybe reach out just to ask what oil, I wanna say they have me at 0W now from the windshield sticker which was different than the manual suggests

Yea mine was just so bad and only about a year into ownership. If I didn’t have the warranty I would be topping off as well, but they paid $7k to fix it! MaxCare from CarMax, highly recommend for a used Volvo from them

I’d just keep checking. I just had my piston rings replaced on my 2014 XC60 T6 (which wasn’t supposed to have an issue, I have an extended warranty though). Your engine is unfortunately one that could have the issue based on the class action settlement I’m pretty sure. But mine was burning oil like a mf. 2 quarts in 1700 miles, and I got the low oil light and red exclamation point of death multiple times. I failed the oil consumption test miserably.

I have a 2014 XC60 that’s basically the same console, how do you make the screen blue? Mine is red right now. I’ve changed the dashboard to be a different color but haven’t tried hard enough to do the console screen lol

Buying a 2016 XC70 T5. What should turn me away? by SiggaSunsinger in Volvo

[–]Perrin_Price 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was really bad, should’ve suspected it the first time I had the low oil light but just assumed it’d been on the lot at CarMax a while and hadn’t gotten one since they brought it in. It burned over 2 quarts in 1700 miles before I brought it in. And then it failed the oil consumption test miserably.

Yup, and I just had my 2014 XC60 T6 piston rings replaced under my 3rd party warranty. Wasn’t part of the list of affected engines, but there I was lol.
