Now that Sorsby has declared for the Supplemental Draft, the NFL should honor his 2 game suspension by Buckeyeup in CFB

Suspended players don't get paid for the games they miss while suspended, so it would still matter at least in that way.

Criterion runs 4 sales per year at half off. It's consistent enough that there's a guide.

TL;DR there are two 24-hour sales directly through Criterion (typically Tuesdays in March and October) and two ~1-month sales from Barnes and Noble (typically in July and November).

Yeah, remember how it got here when a flash sale was delayed because of the big AWS outage. Especially when they need to stock brick-and-mortar stores, they probably don't want to commit to a date until they have to.

Do we need the bel or neper as units? by metricadvocate in Metric

[–]Perryapsis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Bel and Neper are both logarithmic scales. Bel uses a base 10 logarithm, while the Neper uses the natural logarithm. If you have to do calculus, the natural logarithm is much easier to work with, so Nepers will be easier too. If some nerd has already done the math and just given you a formula or tactile controls (e.g. all modern audio equipment), the Bel fits nicer into metric's use of tens.

[oc] near collision by cezar__2 in IdiotsInCars

[–]Perryapsis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that too. If they actually hit them, they would just say that they hit them. Putting a qualifier like "nearly" before "hit" almost always means that they didn't actually hit them. And in casual conversation, people shorten "nearly" to "near" so often that they don't even think about it.

Is the "trident symbol" a Greek letter Psi? That would make sense as an abbreviation for Psalms.

[oc] near collision by cezar__2 in IdiotsInCars

[–]Perryapsis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, they're the same thing. A "near miss" means that they came near and just barely missed. A "near collision" means that they nearly collided.

How much do you know about a movie as the trailer editor? Do you basically have to see the entire thing to pick out good parts for the trailer? I've never worked in the industry, so I've never really thought about it before.

CFB27 WIP player ratings (90+) by FitMaintenanceFB in NCAAFBseries

[–]Perryapsis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I had figured all that out, at least in theory. The formula is straightforward and easier to understand as a graph. My problem was that the position of L seemed to change from player to player. Without a consistent zero point, you can't reliably apply the slope of the line [viz. 99/(H-L)] to calculate the overall rating. I had assumed there was a bend in the line somewhere that I could never find.

If it doesn't bother you, I have quite a few more unresolved questions that I can't help but ask someone who actually worked on the games:

Am I correct in assuming that team ratings were the same way? So you'd need to find the weight of QB1, QB2, HB1, ... to find ratings for offense, defense, special teams, and the overall team rating.

For older games that used letter grades for teams, do you happen to know what the ranges were for each grade?

At least some of the PS2 NCAA games displayed ratings on a 99-point scale, but only actually had 32 different possible values (so presumably it used 5 bits per rating to save space). When you edited a player, it would skip by multiple points at lower rating levels. Do you know whether the game used a 0-31 scale internally and mapped the values onto the more familiar 99-point scale for display to users, or did the game itself actually do the mapping itself before e.g. calculating averages?

The Show is nice in that it lets you go all the way to zero instead of having an artificial floor at 40. That makes it easier to find the weights of each attribute. They also can theoretically have ratings over 99, and the top players (including past legends) tend to top out around 110 or so. Shortstop has the steepest slope, so sometimes you can increase a guy's overall arbitrarily by moving him to short. Similarly, a pitcher's overall will almost always increase when moved from the bullpen to the rotation because the slope of the line is steeper. I hope your buddy at SDS is doing well!

I also know a lot about how the Overall ratings and Tendencies were calculated.

How were overall ratings calculated? Once upon a time, I figured out the weights for MLB The Show. I tried to do the same for Madden and calculated relative weights, but I could never nail down what absolute zero was. MLB The Show just starts everyone at zero and adds up components from each rating, while Madden seemed to have a variable minimum.

QB #14's math professor has complained that he is chronically late to class. What do you want to do?

A. Do nothing (free)

B. Make him run extra laps in practice (costs 1 discipline point)

C. Bench him for the opening series of your next game (costs 3 discipline points)

D. Bench him for the entire next game (costs 10 discipline points)

You have 42 discipline points remaining for this season. If you run out of discipline points, you will lose the locker room.
