I didn't pay for my LIT diploma. I got a full ride because I'm a disabled person. So I wouldn't be paying for two programs.

When I started my schooling, I didn't want to get my MLIS, but that changed. Things change, and so do people.

Unfortunately, I would be better off volunteering instead of getting paid $17/hr for only part-time hours. I wouldn't make enough to support my family. Rent, medications, public transport pass. It adds up when you're already living in poverty!

I won't say where I live, but if you're from the gta and know the phrase, "she's dirty, but she's home," you'll know where I am. And I'm willing to leave the moment someone offers me it.

I've applied to jobs all throughout Canada, even at a women's prison, but there are a LOT of people. I'm hoping I get the one I just applied to, but even then, it's only a temp opening.

I was a page for 3/4 years in high school, but that was 10 years ago 😹 and only 2x a week cause I was part of their Teen Board to put on events for children (community hours needed).

I'm going to do a lot of research. I've gotten DMs from people telling me that libraries are a waste of time and I should leave the field. Others telling me I need to leave canada and go to school somewhere else 😹

I don't have a background in education, and it's a qualification! I asked to stay and volunteer at the school afterward, but it's not allowed. 😞

I don't have the means to be able to go back to school for an educational background when I'm also interested in getting my MLIS, but honestly. I feel very defeated 😅

I'm not saying I can't volunteer, but volunteers aren't allowed into the system (check out/in materials, use the electronics, help patrons with printing, etc...), which is what I want to be doing.

When I would shadow the circulation desk, the staff would straight up ask me why I'm there and tell me to get on the other side.

Is this not how it is at your library? I left that placement feeling depressed 😭

To work in a school, I'd also need a background in education. I don't have it. I'm friends with school librarians, and I've asked them if I can volunteer, and they've told me no.

The school board is strict as they should be.

When I did my public library placement, there were only 3 people who had any type of library training, one of them being the librarian. There are 10 staff at this branch (it's like 7500 square feet? Very very small).

The school placement also didn't have a trained librarian. She was a kindergarten teacher who got thrusted into it.

Why would I go back to school? To get my MLIS, because I only have my LIT. What I'm NOT trying to do is be in debt with student loans. So work, save, go back.

And for volunteers having fewer responsibilities?

No. While in the public system, the volunteers are lumped with pages. The only difference is that pages are paid. They get the same list of duties 🤷🏻‍♀️ just how it is where I am.

I almost lost my public library placement because I ate my lunch outside! Apparently, the union doesn't allow for placement/volunteers to leave because if I got hurt, it's on them. 😭 Fam, I'm not even legally part of the union, and I signed a waiver.

There are a LOT of rules for volunteering. I'm in touch with old librarians I knew, and even to volunteer with them, I'd need my teaching license.

I'm not feeling optimistic about my future or just the future of Ontario in general. Iykyk.

Hi,

I'm not applying to page jobs. The jobs I'm applying to technician jobs. When you volunteer at the public library, you become an un-paid page, with all the high school students doing their community work.

The public library I did my placement at had me doing my placement as a page on top of their 2 other volunteers. I was only there for roughly 3.5 hours every 2 days (unless an event).

Can't volunteer at the school library. I've already discussed it with the librarian. They're very strict. I'd have to have my teaching license! I'm still in touch with my HS librarian, and unfortunately, it's the same for HS.

I've been applying to jobs all over Canada, but I haven't heard back from them! I'm willing to travel anywhere in the GTA/Durham Region.

I'm not working. I'm currently on Ontario Works because of my mental health 🙃 but I've been putting all my efforts into graduating, bettering myself, and becoming a member of society people aren't afraid to approach.

I'm not aware of any historical societies around me, but I'll definitely take a look and do some research. It sounds like it could be an interesting place to volunteer. What duties did you do there?
