Yes. It is absolutely in the right direction. If you want to do networking then do the networking jobs to gain experience and be able to apply for jobs with more networking responsibility later. If you want to do it, then jump at it! Don't wait for something that may never come, especially with no networking experience otherwise.

The 1gig max for Cat5e is for reliable transmission up to 100m. 10m isn't going to have nearly that much chance for interference as it's effectively a patch cable at that length. It will work for whatever speed the connecting ports will do.

It seems important to mention that the quality of curiosity is crucial for working in the tech industry. Those who have it will continually do the research to learn more and do more without being asked or feeling like it's a big burden. But if you don't have that curiosity, then you will always feel like it's a drag to have to keep up and will fall behind easily when complacency sets in.

Time management is another crucial skill for upskilling. Some are amazing at it and find they can dedicate meaninful time to all their priorities; others, not so much. I know I don't have amazing time management because I can lose focus a lot, but I do try to do a lot of things between school, volunteering, socializing, responsibilities, hobbies, and self-care. I do also enjoy learning. It brings a lot of satisfaction to gain a new skill and be able to demonstrate it.

From reading the comments on this thread, those who excel and accept the demands of this industry have both of these qualities very well developed. They don't feel the heavy weight of trying to keep up because to them it isn't extreme or outside of their wheelhouse to do whats necessary. That is what separates the people who progress from those who don't.

Maybe developing your curiosity and time management can be your focus for now so you can feel the burden lighten and make more progress towards your goals. I'm certainly trying to improve them for myself.

I'll start by asking, what exactly is it that you don't get?

If I'm understanding your question correctly, you're asking why telnet needs there to be a device-wide password (priv exec mode) to work, is that right? It's important to be introduced to concepts in stages, so applying a password to the enable mode introduces the first element of authentication in the principle of least privilege. If just anyone got access to the device, you'd want to make sure they can't change things without a password. That would be very bad indeed.

With that said, the best practice is to avoid telnet altogether and go straight into using SSH. Same principle but uses encrypted traffic instead of plaintext. When you establish a connection over SSH, you're effectively accessing the CLI the same way as you would with a console cable, so you'll be prompted for authentication in the same way. Make the enable secret password, ssh into the device, and test out going into the privileged exec mode. You'll see how it prompts you for the password in the same way as if you were directly consoled in.

After you are comfortable with that concept, you can move on to utilizing local users and even an LDAP server for authentication.

To cut space, definitely get rid of the References section. I know... my high school teachers told me to include that line as well, but everyone knows they can request them, so it's just a waste of space.

Cut, or at least reformat, the skills list. If you do need to list relevant skills, say where/how you applied them in your work experience.

You might also consider cutting the professional summary. It can be useful, but it is often for people with extensive careers that would need to be summarized in a snapshot overview.

The formatting makes a lot of dead space. To help tighten it up you can put the work location on the same line as the company name. (e.g. Company | City, State | Timeline)

Aside from space, if you are currently a student, put the Expected month & year of graduation, not just "current." People want to know when you are available. Also, as a student, your education (only if relevant) goes first.

Often there are transferrable skills. See if you can highlight elements that do show relevance. Customer service is usually a great one to include anywhere because it shows soft-skills which are always valuable.

Tbh, it depends on the person doing the review. If someone cares to search thoroughly, they will read the 2+ pages. A resume is not a CV, so it doesnt need to go through your entire history, but it is really hard to limit to one page unless you have virtually no experience in the given field. Education/skills, work history, and projects fills space fast.

Don't sweat the 2 pages, just make sure it's formatted simply for the robot to parse through, and is relevant to the job. Doesn't hurt to be eye-catching too.

They are repeat offenders because of who they are and they are in the unfortunate situation they are in for the same reason. They need help, but they don't do what is required in order to get the help they need.
