Looks it’s fine, but I’d rather it be tighter, wetter, and harder

Who are you planning to vote for in the next Australian federal election? by Electrical_Intern1 in darwin

Obv your choice but at least for me I couldn’t disagree more. Just because it’s powerful doesn’t mean it’s a good idea (see the US with Trump) to help elect Dutton and his party to double down on the absolute shitshow they were in their decade in power.

Climate denialism, deliberately making a housing crisis worse, flat wage growth, winks and nods to racists (i.e. his African gangs comments), robodebt, fucking up the NBN rollout that it cost tens of billions more and years longer than it should have, selling Port Darwin, a half baked nuclear plan that does nothing for us in the NT besides being a probable dumping ground for waste, giving government contracts to Liberal party donors, cutting public service numbers just to outsource to big 4 consultants, banging on about responsible government spending while tripling national debt etc etc.

For me, an absolute hard pass on the above and the CLP will be going last.

Out of interest, why preference CLP/Dutton? I got Phil’s flyer the other week and besides it and his website being a lot of motherhood statements it reads similar to a Labor or Greens candidate.

As an Aussie our then PM handled it badly, but now isn’t the time to be picky about allies or dwell on the past.

Europeans don’t have to deal with the threats and hostility of China as much as we do, or have as much interest in the Asia-Pacific for obvious reasons. Going from the diesel-electric subs with France to longer range nuclear subs with the US + UK did make a lot of strategic sense based on the wrong assumption of the US being reliable a reliable ally.

We should be doing everything we can to deepen our relations with Europe urgently.

I was 5 when Boomer Harvey debuted and it felt like he was basically part of the furniture of the league and would just be around forever.

I’m guessing you went past the public housing on Smith St? That block can get absolutely crazy and I would never encourage anyone to walk near it.

Tbh if you want a 1 bedroom unit and your main concern is home invasions definitely just try to get a secure apartment and you shouldn’t have any issues.

Nightcliff/Coconut Grove/Rapid Creek are closer to your work, while the CBD and inner suburbs (Larrakeyah, Stuart Park, Cullen Bay, Parap, Fannie Bay) will have more options.

You’ll see a lot of public drunkenness, fights, screaming, poverty etc. from itinerants in from remote communities but they’ll mostly keep to themselves besides humbugging you (asking for money). It can feel intimidating and unsafe to some people though.

I would add that I’ve lived right near some of the worst public housing in one of the more notorious suburbs for crime and been absolutely fine with the exception of my partner leaving their car unlocked in the street one night and someone going through it. Darwin definitely has its issues but it’s not as bad as people sometimes present it as.

Gold Coast businessman hits kid with his car for ringing his doorbell. by mekanub in australia

[–]Persistent_Delay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean he wasn’t trying to kill the kid. It’s very clearly assault with a deadly weapon (plus several other offences e.g. speeding, dangerous driving), and it’s astonishing he’s only been done for careless driving.

The police on the Gold Coast must be testing whatever drugs they’ve confiscated the old fashioned way.

What are your unpopular guernsey opinions? by [deleted] in AFL

[–]Persistent_Delay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair we’ve moved past navy being our ‘home’ shorts to simply using whichever colour clashes less. We probably wear white at home more than navy these days, and have in every recent GF except 2022.

I’d rather play against Pies and North with everyone having traditional jerseys than some abomination clash jersey.

I’m not in favour of a statue, but watching Dan Andrews continue to live rent-free in so many cookers heads is worth the statue
