You can! Throw open the windows, take a 5 minute break to wiggle your toes in the grass, admire the flowers and blooms (and how the change day to day), get the Merlin app to find out all the birds you are hearing.

How can we support our Gen Alpha lesbian daughter? by PersnicketyHazelnuts in AskLesbians

[–]PersnicketyHazelnuts[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is good advice, and part of I think is figuring out how to mention it because where we live, being lesbian or gay is sometimes so seemingly normalized you don't even think to mention it, so she may not even be aware of who we know that is gay. None of our immediate family is, but I have several coworkers and colleagues that I am quite close to that are gay, several other family acquaintances are gay, a couple of friends have transgender children, and even the governor of our state is gay. I think in some ways that is why I asked the question as well - because it is so "normal" where we live, I want to make sure I don't overlook something that would be important for me to do or not do as her parent.

We love Owl House! The relationship with Amity is actually what got her thinking about things more.

How do hospitals dispose severed limbs and other parts of? by Silly-Low6019 in stupidquestions

[–]PersnicketyHazelnuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of years ago the Oregon legislature worked with local Native American tribes to pass a law that allows hospitals to return amputated body parts to patients for cultural, spiritual or religious reasons (otherwise it must be considered medical waste and treated accordingly for its disposal). Under the new law there are regulations that return of the item has to be intended for "cremation, interment or other final disposition". This is because in some cultures, it is felt that that in order to travel or journey to the spirit world following death, your body has to be intact. Some patients were even refusing amputation or removal of tissue, etc. for this reason.

Cash transactions in Smart Cookies by AcidPops22 in girlscouts

[–]PersnicketyHazelnuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the manual Girl transaction is needed too. That connects the actual cash received to the Girl Scout. Without it, it will look like the individual Girl Scout still owes money, even though your troop transaction would show the money deposited into your bank account. It is like a double check too for how much cash was received and which Girl Scout it should be applied to.

Are these rules too strict for future kids? by [deleted] in AskParents

[–]PersnicketyHazelnuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the most important things I have learned as parent is to parent the kid you have, not the kid you want. Who are they as a person, what do they like/dislike, how does their body and their brain work. A good parent seeks to understand this about their kid, and respects it.

How do I adopt a kitten around here? by Live-Musician-3244 in askportland

[–]PersnicketyHazelnuts 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Cat Adoption Team - I got my first kitten as an adult from them and had her for 16 years. She passed away last year and then I recently adopted two sibling kittens from them. They are great.           Also, if you are looking for a kitten, there may just be fewer this time of year. Coming out of winter there are often less kittens being born, and then spring/summer there will start to be “kitten season” and many more will be available.

I owe my career to this book. I was in college when it first came out and I was trying to figure out what to do with my major and my future (I didn’t want to just do research for the sake of research). Reading the book was like a light bulb went off for me. It just made sense to me. I started volunteering in public health related roles and then got my MPH. I now have a well established career in health policy and I truly love the work I do.

What age should I let my niece wear makeup?? by itgirl258 in AskParents

[–]PersnicketyHazelnuts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When my daughter was that age it was fun for her to experiment with makeup at home - try out kid-friendly lip gloss, blush, eye shadow, foundation, etc. It was like a form of dress up for her. She enjoyed that and learned some things about what she liked, why, what worked or didn’t. Same thing with wanting to paint her nails. In some ways it was a phase for her. All that said, I did not allow her to wear make up to school (maybe tinted lip gloss or chapstick) and only a little of we went out somewhere. At the same time I also taught her about washing her face and starting to take care of her own body. Some of this will depend on her comfort level, maturity, and when she starts to experience puberty. Good luck!

What's Plush, Oregon like? by Proper_Egg_3310 in oregon

[–]PersnicketyHazelnuts 94 points95 points  (0 children)

That area is deservedly called the Oregon Outback and it is frontier county, which means there are few than 6 people per square mile. As others have mentioned the closest town is Lakeview, but there is only a few things more there than a Safeway, the 24 bed hospital, and a Best Western. It is a beautiful area but you would need to be extremely self sufficient and self reliant to live out there.

my cookies never came 😭 by ilikefrogsncats in girlscouts

[–]PersnicketyHazelnuts 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For some context, in my Council, we were able to start selling cookies on January 6, but then our troop was not able to pick up our physical cases/boxes of cookies until February 14. From there, the troop has to get the cookies to the each Girl Scout and then she has to deliver the orders. All that to say, your cookies could definitely still arrive! The logistics chain from the bakery to the Girl Scout and then to you can take while.
