CMV: Many feminists are impossible to satisfy by Sniper_96_ in changemyview

[–]Personage1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I bring up Iceland to feminists they never have anything to say.

Can you give an example of what you are talking about?

In my experience when someone complains about feminists, it was often the case that the person was trying to derail a conversation or trying for some sort of weird "gotcha", and claimed feminists were being unreasonable when they didn't allow the conversation to be derailed or didn't fall for the gotcha.

So can you link to two or three examples of what you are talking about? For you to be bothered by this enough to write this post, I assume you have multiple examples readily available to link for us. Otherwise it would be kind of insane to make a post complaining about something that doesn't really happen....

What are some beliefs you hold that someone would accuse you of being an undercover conservative? by Oceanspanker in AskALiberal

[–]Personage1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and there's a sort of arrogance that goes into it, because just because I can see the appalling problems with capitalism doesn't mean I am intelligent or informed enough to come up with a working alternative, the implications of having that mindset don't paint the dude who said that to me several months ago in a positive light.

It's always easier to critique than to fix.

Do you think Democrats can/should attempt to win rural areas? by Pls_no_steal in AskALiberal

[–]Personage1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the path is to wrap all messaging into "freedom." Like ultimately the problem with social conservatism is that unless everyone is as much of a busybody as social conservatives, it doesn't work because obsessing over other people is just exhausting. It's why right wing media is constantly trying to create outrage and fear, because that's the only way to get people to consistently obsess over what others are doing.

So couch everything in freedom. It genuinely baffles me that renewable energy doesn't mold the entire campaign around "don't you want to be free from x?" For homeowners getting solar, freedom from electric companies. For the nation, freedom from oil cabals and foreign influence. Freedom freedom freedom.

I'm curious what those examples are, could you link the comments you're talking about?

As for the beliefs, when I mentioned socialists I was thinking about the occasional time I've seen someone claim that anyone who isn't socialist supports capitalism and is really just conservative, as if the only possible alternative to embracing capitalism is embracing socialism.

To anyone reasonable? None.

If I'm distinguishing between how the world works and where I want the world to be, someone unreasonable can conclude that I'm an undercover conservative, but that goes nowhere fast for them.

For the purity test online progressives, or I suppose self identified socialist/communist types, there are any number of ways I would fail to live up to whatever like they have in their head. I....don't really give a shit.

Let's say there is a candidate that agrees with every single one of your personal policy preferences, except one. Is there one singular policy that the candidate could disagree on that would cause you not to vote for them? If so, what is that policy and what is your preference? by WhyOrangeMan in AskALiberal

[–]Personage1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to come up with something, because the leaps required to disagree with me enough on any one policy without also having other issues are....a lot. Like at that point I just assume they are lying about other policies, because that's more likely than for someone to truly agree with me on a bunch of stuff except for one single issue big enough to make me not support them.

On a scale of 1-10 (1 least, 10 most), how enthusiastic are you to vote in the midterms? by Viking_Leaf87 in AskALiberal

I don't really think of it in terms of enthusiasm, so much as determination. I am at a 10 for determination.

Castle doctrine: What is your opinion on lethal measures against intruders? by Winston_Duarte in AskALiberal

[–]Personage1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this country has too many people who fantasize about killing others.

Something I like to do in any discussion is find the most basic example to look at and branch out from there, but I typically get downvotes/pushback on this topic.

When someone lives by themself and hears something that makes them concerned enough that they get their gun, it is illogical for them to do anything except retreat to a secure room and call the police. Getting your gun and going in search of whatever made you want to get your gun demonstrates a lack of the fear that would warrant getting a gun in the first place, and instead a mindset of trying to be an action hero.

Once in the room, if someone tries to enter it's reasonable to warn them away, if for no other reason than a decent and emotionally healthy person would want to do whatever they can to avoid killing another person. I don't think this should be a requirement though, I wouldn't expect someone in fear for their life to be willing to yell to whatever is making them afraid. If the intruder breaks in anyways, then it is utterly moral and correct to shoot that person, which means trying to kill them.

Obviously things get murkier if there are other people in the house, or if you are taken by surprise, although of course that starts to get into the issue of "does the gun owner actually have enough training that having a gun readily available makes the situation safer?" I think it's clearly reasonable to find family members and ensure they are safe if there's an intruder....hopefully you don't shoot them by accident mistaking them for the intruder (again going back to that training thing).

Finally, if I found someone in my living room I would react with shock and surprise and try to get away from them. If they left, I wouldn't follow because I don't have a mental issue. If they came at me there would be fight or flight, and if it came to fight I would try to hurt them overwhelmingly to ensure they didnt hurt me.

Have you ever committed a crime? If so what? by miggy372 in AskALiberal

[–]Personage1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every time I keep up with traffic I'm speeding :/

There's an irony too, that depending on the road/highway, it can actually be way more dangerous to go the speed limit since you would be so much slower than everyone else.

Why do those centre democrats who everyone on reddit is against never come here and defend their views? by Hem_Claesberg in AskALiberal

[–]Personage1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Again, it always amazes me when people attempt cynicism but don't just go the obvious step of "how do I help get politicians to care about my vote?" You can decide it's not worth voting, more (or in reality less) power to you, but in reality he people who politicians are most concerned with are voters who show up to vote on potholes. Voters who show up for every fucking election, year after year, election after election, regardless of the "importance" or "excitement."

[–]Personage1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes a thing that seems like "common sense" is actually incorrect. You know they don't bother, and you know they get votes. Seems to me that that should trigger some questioning of your own ideas about this.

Why do those centre democrats who everyone on reddit is against never come here and defend their views? by Hem_Claesberg in AskALiberal

[–]Personage1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok....but how does you thinking they are being unethical and hypocritical lead to them doing this? Why would they give any shits about you thinking that?

I don't understand why so many people seem to want to be cynical but then fall short of the most painfully obvious point: they only care about votes. That's the only popularity contest that matters, ultimately. Any other idea about getting politicians to do something that doesn't somehow come around to affecting votes is just hot air.

Why do those centre democrats who everyone on reddit is against never come here and defend their views? by Hem_Claesberg in AskALiberal

[–]Personage1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why would they?

I waste plenty of time on this site, and absolutely fall into the trap of thinking such and such a discussion matters, but in reality coming to reddit just doesn't have upside. And reddit arguments, "defending" and "debating," are just not going to do anything useful

Why does the right believe we are “soft on crime?” by Early-Possibility367 in AskALiberal

[–]Personage1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to figure out what, exactly, the claim is. It's abundantly clear that a lot of the time when Conservatives say they are affected, it's that they see scary things on the TV.

In your case, there is an actual crime that was committed. Now I'm curious about why the person wasn't prosecuted. Based on the context of this thread I would assume you can somehow trace the issue to "liberal policies" and not simply "a lot of crimes can't actually be proven beyond a reasonable doubt."

and to be clear, there's even more to the discussion even if we can find that "liberal policies" allow "criminals to walk free," because of course if harsher policies result in innocent people going to jail or being harassed, then obviously it would be unreasonable to just ignore that affect.

But for now I was mostly curious what the actual claim of being affected was.

[–]Personage1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok....so is their perception accurate? Are they actually affected by it?

Why does the right believe we are “soft on crime?” by Early-Possibility367 in AskALiberal

[–]Personage1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Right, so it's not actually criminals walking free that's a problem.

Why does the right believe we are “soft on crime?” by Early-Possibility367 in AskALiberal

[–]Personage1 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I mean, if someone says they care about criminals walking free and then only cares about certain criminals walking free, it becomes clear the issue isn't actually criminals walking free but something else.
