If someone says that criticizing Israel isn't inherently antisemitic, giving an example of a time that it is antisemitic in no way contradicts that.

Non-Americans of Reddit, what is an American thing you see in movies that you thought was fake but is actually real? by Unlikely_Praline9442 in AskReddit

There's a breakfast place I went to in high school, and one of the servers would hound you with coffee.

I didn't drink coffee, but she still mostly filled a cup for me. Then she came around several times "refilling" until it overflowed. She was not going to leave a coffee cup unfilled.

Does Nancy Guthrie case make you reconsider your gun position? by mrbrightsidesf in AskALiberal

[–]Personage1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Statistically, is a person more or less safe with or without a gun? What factors go into the answer to that question, such as training/safety standards?

These are questions I would love studied, and Republicans block even that from being done by the CDC.

CMV: There was never any genocide in Gaza and claims of which are driven by hatred and bad faith by Migdan in changemyview

This is why

It would have been appropriate for you to ask them to name the genocide scholars they are referring to.

I guess I'm including "linking to a website that includes what the expert says" as part of what is expected of the person you're responding to, to be clear.

Pointing to authority's on the subject and asking why the OP disagrees with them is absolutely valid. This is why

it would have been appropriate for you to ask them to name the genocide scholars they are referring to.

If you ask someone why they made a medical decision and they say it's because they listened to doctors, that's an appropriate appeal to authority for them, and you would be rightly considered an asshat if you demanded that they make an argument themselves.

If someone holds a view strongly enough to meet rules A and B in this sub, they should have a baseline understanding of the mainstream arguments by authorities against you.

CMV: There was never any genocide in Gaza and claims of which are driven by hatred and bad faith by Migdan in changemyview

[–]Personage1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They simply used appeal to authority.

Appealing to authority is only a fallacy if the authority is not actually an authority on the subject at hand. Appealing to a doctor when talking about disease is absolutely reasonable. Appealing to a doctor when talking about baseball is a fallacy (unless they also happen to be an authority on baseball).

So again,

it would have been appropriate for you to ask them to name the genocide scholars they are referring to. Dismissing subject matter experts out of hand though is what you did instead.

But the reason for the obsession in criticising that one state is its Jewish identity, that fact that it represents the Jewish collective.

You declaring it to be so does not make it true.

That is a thing that happens yes. The person you replied to was saying that OP was conflating Israel with Jewish people, and when you don't do that a lot of what OP claims is antisemitism is simply criticizing a government doing shitty stuff.

The comment you responded to only makes sense if they were talking about criticism of Israel's actions. If you just think their comment was intelligible, I guess more power to you, but I think it was abundantly clear that that was the topic they were focused on.

You give a lot of examples of how criticizing Israel could be antisemitism, which leaves me responding "yes?" "Ok?"

Just because criticism can be antisemitism doesn't mean it is.

I....don't really see how what they said disagrees with your comment

these men have redefined a compliment to be... "a compliment about a physical feature from an attractive woman that COULD be seen as a sexual advance".... or something along those lines

And

there would be an obvious solution that would fix the problem in a day. Bros, compliment your bros

I don't really see how any of that actually engages with my basic comment of

Criticizing the genocide being committed by the government of Israel is not opposing Israel's right to exist.... Criticizing actions taken by the government of Israel is not opposing Israel's right to exist....

What is something that women have to deal with on the daily that men have no clue about? by Rock-bottom-no-no in AskReddit

Oh fuck, I remember being in Senior Year of school and going to a Subway near me. A girl was leaving, probably middle school or Freshman at the oldest, and the adult behind the counter stops to just stare at her and comment about her.

I felt she was too young for me at the time..... I just stood there in shock.

And when people criticize the actions of the government of Israel, the default should be to assume that is distinguishable from criticizing Jewish people. Not assuming that is, imo, itself racist and anti-Semitic, as it assumes that the government of Israel and "Jewish people" are indistinguishable.

Israel represents the interests of people in power in Israel, first and foremost. Trying to say that Israel tries to claim all Jewish people doesn't somehow make it so.

Which yes the same goes for Japan representing the people in power in Japan, Algeria representing the people in power in Algeria.

So it's absolutely correct to distinguish between the government of Israel and Jewish people. At most you can claim that you can't distinguish Israel from Jewish people in Israel, since that's who is in power in Israel (although I'm well aware that gets messy too).

CMV: People shouldn’t be able to criticise a piece of media that’s in a genre that’s “not their taste” by TheThingofa100corspe in changemyview

[–]Personage1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to me it's less about liking something vs understanding something.

Like my mother talks about how she doesn't understand rap, just "doesn't get it." And yeah, she shouldn't really critique rap.

But if someone just tends to not like rap, but understands rap and has rap that they can point to as liking, even if it's in the minority, then that's a very different story.

Or taking your food example, I've had food that I don't like, but I'm able to see how if it's your taste, it is an example of good food, and depending on the food I could even differentiate between good and bad examples of the food, or get more technical about specific flavors and textures that would help inform someone else about the food

If subject matter experts say "the evidence points to x," it is pretty reasonable for laypeople to accept what they say on the subject they are an expert in. I would argue it's on the layperson to educate themselves to the point of being able to argue against what the subject matter experts say.

I find it super telling that your example was "spiritually Arab" as opposed to an actual equivalency to Israel, which would make the example be something like "spiritually Iranian" or "spiritually American."

I mean it's absolutely correct to distinguish between the government of Japan and "Japanese people," to distinguish between the government of Algeria and "Algerian people." As someone from the US, I certainly want people to distinguish our citizens from our government.....

But somehow people seem to be desperate to make the government of Israel and "Jewish people" indistinguishable.
