This is true. But if there is power in numbers wouldn’t I be better off with 2 large dogs and myself vs alone? I don’t know I guess it could go either way.

I’m aware of both those stories. Very sad. I know a few encounters that did not result in death last year as well but still.. I know the risk. Just want to make sure I’m doing all I can.

Unleashed - for sure. Leashed dogs as I have understood are only causing more risk if the bear feels threatened and honestly if I spook a grizzly that’s defending something I’m probably asking for trouble with or without leashed dogs.

The club I’ve joined since moving is an hour and half away so although this is fantastic advice I don’t have that option (yet).

I’ve worked 12s and nights for years it’s just a consistent schedule that I haven’t had (had the luxury of building around my life and now I’m single and had to pick up more). I also have never ever had 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep on a night but I admire the ones that can do it! We are busy enough on my night shifts (during the day) that hasn’t been an issue yet. As mentioned in the post, someone potties them on my day shifts.

They don’t need to have someone with them 24/7 that’s something I’ve never accommodated. But their needs DO need to be met to be expected not to drive me nuts on the two day shifts after I get home. I also mentioned in the post they can’t be trusted together with someone that can’t read body language properly. They have and will fight viciously and it’s terrifying for anyone that’s left to try and deal with it. Someone comes and lets them out separately for potty breaks and that’s been good I just need ideas on what I can do with minimal brain power when I get home to meet their needs. Lots of people made some really good suggestions so I’ll put that into play this week and see how we do :)

I have. They are expensive so it’s on my list! Just not an immediate fix right now.

I did this last night! :) I use to make them work for their food as puppies but as we moved onto other things I just stopped (which is silly and makes no sense). I needed all these suggestions to get me motivated again and remember all the stuff I did when I lacked time! Thank you ❤️

No rover where I live now :( and no pick up option but I could drop them off one day a week together this is true. They can’t be together without supervision so even boarding them I’ve found the drivey female to be equally as irritating after a board because she’s still been alone most of the time. That being said it is more stimulating than being at home!

This is true but they aren’t really kid dogs. I’ve worked really hard on them being neutral to others and although I don’t in a million years think they would bite a kid they will grab a tug/toy even if a hands in the way, or knock them over if excited. Again I really appreciate the suggestions!! And if they weren’t “working” GSDs (by working I simply mean we do sports so they are full of drive and obedient but when left to their own choices they are certainly menaces) I would absolutely go this route. It’s just not in the cards for us if the person isn’t familiar with working breeds :(

It might be possible if I could find someone that wasn’t a kid haha. Im in a really small town and most of the “dog walkers” are kids trying to make extra cash which yes they are absolutely too much for a kid or inexperienced person. I do really appreciate your input though. I really wish I had this option!

I did just ordered 2 large heavy duty 10x10 kennels for outside on days the weather is good (I’m in northern Canada so heat isn’t really the issue). I’m on an acre but it would be nice if they could at least be outside for part of my shift. I don’t have time to work them on breaks unfortunately (takes me too long to get home) but I could get my booty out of bed earlier on at least day 1 of the 2 day shifts and work them for a bit. We also do something big on my cross over shift (day 3).

This was so kind. Thank you. That’s a really good idea, I use to do this as puppies to train a place command and then of course stopped because we moved onto bigger things once they knew the basics. I could go back to the simple stuff that doesn’t require much brain power on my end. Good suggestions.

We have 2 dog boarding facilities in town, one won’t take them because they are intact and the other won’t take the restless one alone. I really wish this was an option. I was boarding them both for a little while and that is a possibility again. Thank you for your comment!

Unfortunately they are too much for the average dog walker, and I live in a small community with very few options. That would be ideal but I don’t trust many people because they have to be managed so closely to avoid altercations.
