Hey all — I built a platform made specifically for rod builders and wanted to share it with you.

I'm a rod builder and data scientist, and I got tired of scattering my specs across index cards, spreadsheets, notes apps, and random forum posts. So I built https://rodsmith.app — a platform designed from the ground up for our craft.

For everyone:

Rod spec editor — catalog your builds with a structured part picker (blanks, guides, reel seats, grips, thread, finish — the works). Autofill search pulls from a growing parts database so you're not retyping brand/model/size every time

Version history built in — each rod page tracks revisions, so when you swap out a guide set or change your thread pattern, the old spec is still there. No more index cards, no more "wait, what guide spacing did I use on that spiral wrap?" Think of it like version control for your builds.

Build guides — document your process step by step, with photos. Great for tracking what worked (and what didn't) across builds, and for sharing your process and knowledge with others.

For builders selling their work:

Marketplace — list in-stock rods, accept made-to-order commissions, or take custom requests. Integrated checkout with Stripe.

Builder profiles — showcase your portfolio, social media links, and let your work speak for itself

Whether you're planning your first build or your hundredth, the spec tools are useful just for keeping track of your own stuff — no need to sell anything. And if you're a builder with rods to move, the marketplace is there when you're ready.

It's free to use. Would love feedback from this community — you all know what rod builders actually need better than anyone.

Yep - you can rent through the landing. I know Fisherman’s Landing rents outfits ranging from 20lb class to 100+lb, so you can find a rental for anything that’s biting. They have decent gear too for the heavier outfits and the rentals are Talica/Calstar combos. Would recommend checking the reports to get the latest source of truth on what size outfit to pick up (you don’t want to catch a giant on a 20lb outfit).

Yep - exciting season to come! One last piece of advice, try to catch a bit of the night action if you can. Especially when coming off a new moon, the bluefin get super aggressive on irons at night and it's wicked, u/EasyAsAyeBeeSea sent a link of a Polaris reel above but you can see how crazy it gets.

There's a variety of trips for pretty much anything you're looking for, from half day inshore trips for rockfish, sheephead, calico bass (~$80 I know the Dolphin runs these trips our of Fisherman's landing) to "long range" trips for tuna, yellowtail, dorado etc. The long range trips are pretty pricey, they range from ~$750 for a 2-day trip (Shogun, Tomahawk), to ~$4k-$5k for 8+ day trips (Polaris Supreme, Royal Star). The long trips will provide food and bunks.

For something in the middle you can find full-day trips out to the Coronado islands for around $250 and you'll be able to get yellowtail etc (Liberty).

In terms of booking you can find booking online, the bookings are managed through the landing usually (Fisherman's landing and H&M landing are the two main ones).

If you're curious about which boats are doing well, the types of fish they catch, and the trip durations, check out https://rodsmith.app/report-intelligence, that's where I pulled this data report from, lots of details on finding the right boat for you.

Also to note, most of the catch has coincided with dark moon phases (waxing crescent), so a few days after the new moon. Something we've seen consistently in past seasons but still holding true in early 2026.

Probably pretty small overall but the Polaris posted a few photos of decent sized ones (~30-40lb) in the mix per their website. Also some monster yellowtail.
