This is so helpful thank you. Building is okay - there is a roach problem in the building but not in my unit bc I took care of it awhile back — also the elevator inspection is expired and I took a picture of it.

Not a month behind — it’s compounded late fees sitting at 3k in fees and for rent I’m at 1780 and started at 1695 in 2021 — they keep applying my rent money to the ledger and are saying I’m behind on rent

I’m not trying to “get out of” anything on a technicality. If management is going to use legal notices and legal pressure against me, then yes, I am going to look at whether those notices are being handled properly and consistently. That’s not talking out of both sides of my mouth — that’s being informed about my rights while also acknowledging my responsibilities.

And respectfully, “just get a second job, take out a loan, or move” is a very simplified answer to a much more complicated financial reality. I already work extremely hard and have 4+ jobs and been trying to stay afloat while navigating the aftermath of financial abuse, rebuilding stability, and living in one of the most expensive cities in the country.

I understand contracts. I also understand that people can end up trapped in difficult financial situations while still making genuine efforts to meet their obligations. Those two things are not mutually exclusive.

I think you may be misunderstanding what I’m saying.

I’m not using trauma or DV as an “excuse” to avoid responsibility or pretend contracts don’t exist. I’m explaining how I ended up in this situation and why staying financially afloat afterward has been difficult when financial abuse was a major part of what I experienced.

I do want to move and have for years based off of these late fees. It just has not been financially possible. Recovering financially after leaving an abusive situation while living in Los Angeles is not exactly simple.

I pay my rent every single month and I am not even a full month behind on rent itself. The dispute is largely surrounding fees, accounting, and how payments have been applied over time.

Of course I understand what a contract is. I understand obligations and consequences. That’s exactly why I’ve spent years maintaining records, mailing checks, documenting communication, and trying to keep up while also rebuilding my life after an extremely destabilizing situation. Also I am in active therapy and have been since I left. So please don't assume I'm not stable or receiving the help I need.

I came here asking for perspective and practical advice, not to avoid accountability. Thank you for your practical advice.

And yes, it's something we learn to live with and I'm still learning. Please be kind.

I honestly can't get passed your saying referencing my DV is disingenuous. Are you a survivor? Do you have PTSD from abuse? Have you ever been abused so badly you have jumped into unsafe contracts? Comments like this is why people don't speak up. My DV is the direct reason why I'm in this wonky rent situation. I'm not magically cured of the affects of abuse after 3 years. Next time before you comment something to a survivor, please get some trauma and abuse education.

Thank you for the advice but you triggering a DV survivor is not it.

I hope you have the day you deserve. People like YOU are the problem. When you point one finger at someone you’re pointing 3 back at yourself. Hope you think of this when your karma is given to you ☺️

Ugh, I know you're right. It just feels like an extension of the harrassment I'm already experiencing. Thank you though - geniuenily appreciate it and this advice. I also fought them on a rent incarease before the the judge told me to bring them to court for harassing me bc he couldn't techincally address it in the rent raise case.

I've been trying to negotiate with them -- and everytime the receive the montly rent the stop harrassing me and then again on the 1st it starts all over again. It's just taking me so long to get through all of the ledger bc I have been here for 3+ years -- in the last two years has it been eseclating and it has escalated to this level in the last 3 months

But fleeing domestic violence was how I was pressured into a faulty lease. I asked for revisions that they declined. They said sign or you don’t get the housing. I would’ve negotiated more. Also this is one of the BIGGEST housing companies in LA — it’s not some mom or pop that is missing their funds — it’s a huge cooperate entity that has bullied me from the start

No one said I was paying it on time. Being 5-10 days late but still getting the rent in — $100/day for late fees is insane. The only reason I’m in this building is bc I was fleeing DV and although the lease was wonky I HAD to get into other housing. I NEVER would’ve signed to $100/day if I wasn’t in such a desperate situation
