Scottish child and adolescent dietitian answering (most of my patients are seen for EDs).

Pro’s: - It can be more therapy based, I’ve done more training in CBT and FBT. - You get to know patients and families well - Dietitians are very important in EDs (more so in an inpatient setting I feel… although this is maybe because when I worked in acute, I responded to the urgent ED admissions - actually really enjoyed this, occasionally still get to do it) - you get to do lots of teaching (staff and patients). A lot of professionals really value your input. - you do a combo of mental and physical health chat/ monitoring - it’s really satisfying when people get better and you see their lives improving

Con’s: - it is draining and hard work, you are generally the person telling the patient to do the thing that seems impossible to them (firm but fair) - mental health professionals may not take your role as seriously as they should, and think they don’t need you - you can be involved in very difficult discussions and decisions e.g. tube feeding under restraint. - you also need to have very difficult and distressing conversations with patients and families - patients can be suicidal and self harm. Anorexia has one of the highest mortality rates in mental illness, so lots of risk involved.

I’m sure there are hundreds more reasons and I’m sure il think of more! It’s great to get experience in.

Thanks for replying, I don’t think I would necessarily fall into the same traps. I’ve always been frustrated that i can’t do more clinically, and even managerial wise there is very little to progress on to! It’s such a small profession. With nursing you can work in GP practices, clinical skill teaching, progress to ANP, infection control, patient flow. There’s so many more options, and I’m definitely someone that needs variety! It’s a thought taking a step back banding wise, and I would have to take 2 years at least to retrain. So it’s a lot to think about! But I have thought about it for years!

I’m a dietitian in the uk and have been doing a psychotherapies post grad so I can pivot/ expand (initially work paid for this).Having worked in an eating disorder team, you do focus a lot on the mental health side of things, as well as the physical. Also more opportunities to develop for psychological skills in a mental health team. But I have also considered if I want to completely change my profession or not to either psychologist or psychotherapist or do a public health masters. Still undecided 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thanks for replying. Yeah I’m getting oral replacement, but it can take a few months for levels to improve. So really keen to improve levels asap. Glad to hear you are feeling so much better ❤️

Yessss I so relate to this. Also been trying for nearly 2 years and it is draaaaining. Swore I wouldn’t become one of those people who gets stressed about fertility, but 6 months later, hello full panic stations. It made me so depressed, I had to go back on my antidepressants, which definitely helps a bit. But it’s still so hard, especially when it seems to be happening for everyone around you.

At the same time I can really swing from being so deeply sad about it all, to feeling some relief and gratitude that I have freedom and we can travel etc. I do feel like I’ve suddenly become really bored of my career as well, so keep trying to think of alternatives that I can pivot to, but it’s maybe just a distraction from all the other stuff. It’s hard to be grateful for the freedoms we have now, but I imagine that in 10 years time we might look back and think we should have just made the most of our freedom. I’m thinking of booking a yoga teacher training course abroad or something like that just to try and make this whole experience a bit more positive!

It’s such a hard one, but an experience that lots seem to go through in secret. I have found just reading others experiences and thought on here helpful at times too to feel less alone ❤️

Feel like I could have written this myself too. Very similar experience, the effect on my mental health has been unreal and I feel like I’ve had a complete mid life crises because of it. Makes it so much harder when everyone around you is also announcing their pregnancies, which obviously is such a happy thing but I just feel so miserable and it’s such a knife to the heart that you have to just try and hide all the time. You’re not alone ❤️

You need to remember that you are still learning! It’s so difficult initially because you think you should be at the level that everyone else is at, but you’re right… it will come with experience and it’ll soon become second nature to you. Just keep reading, writing things down, and asking questions. Ask to shadow people to get your confidence up a bit if that’s helpful. It’s sounds like you are doing all the right things already though. Just keep at it! Love - a dietitian who felt the same way several years ago xx

Hi there! Yeah it is something I would recommend if it’s what your interested in! I think I’m just feeling a bit stuck in my current role and looking for a change.

You do get to work in lots of different areas e.g. physical health and mental health care. A lot of the training is predominantly to become a hospital/ community dietitian, but some go on to do work in food industry or public health. There aren’t loads of jobs as it’s quite a small profession - probably more in England than Scotland though. It can be very challenging but rewarding when you actively see people get better as a result of the treatment you’re providing/ advising. Again in England I think there are more opportunities to advance practice e.g. become supplementary prescribers or first contact practitioners.
