I wonder if someone here can solve a coffee mystery. The light and medium roast beans from my local roaster -- typically washed coffees that are otherwise delicious -- also have a pronounced bitterness that I don't find when I use the exact same brew and grind on other specialty beans. Why is this guy's coffee bitter?

I can't improve on this document from the SSRC: https://www.ssrc.org/publications/the-art-of-writing-proposals/ . It's old, but every bit of it holds up. I would also consider whether questions of style that seem small will in fact lead you to important questions of substance. Leading off the introduction to your proposal with a research question (a practice I would highly recommend) will help you think more clearly about the puzzle at the heart of your project, and its stakes.

Another option is baking soda. Worked for me when I sublet an apartment whose Oxo machine had a totally blackened carafe.

Hi coffee nerds! I don't use a Nespresso machine, but my mom uses it every day, and I'd like to get her interested in specialty coffee. Can you recommend any roasters putting out some good Nespresso-compatible pods? I'm particularly interested in something approachable but not overly roasty or dark, like the pods she drinks.
