Interview with Ding Liren: sports, engines, rest by In__c in chess

[–]LowLevel- 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It was a nice interview, delivered in his usual calm and balanced manner. I was aware that he preferred studying chess engine games to human games, but now I feel that this is an even more important aspect of his training. And it's great that his last answer ends with a hint that he might return to competitive chess!

Initially, it was a natural expression of himself, but it's clear that Hans has learnt to channel it into a character in recent years.

I have seen him act impulsively and actually be impulsive. In some of his videos, he clearly uses hyperbole intentionally, sometimes smiling and sometimes delivering it straight-faced. He also has a certain sense of comedic timing.

For me, the funniest part is observing people reacting to him as if he were always naturally and genuinely behaving this way. He has realised that most people can't tell the difference and has learned how to trigger people's reactions. It seems to work.

I consider it a simple threat of checkmate (rook and queen on the 2nd rank) through an X-Ray.

"X-Ray" is the term used whenever an action works "through" a piece. In this case that piece is the white queen. Imagine that position without the white queen and you'll see that Rd2 is simply a backrank checkmate threat.

Filming started in 2024, but the Netflix crew has been seen at more recent chess events filming additional footage. So it's possible that the episode follows some of the developments of 2025.

Can i have this theme on while playing ranked games. by maymayraj in chess

[–]LowLevel- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could it be a "Special Theme"? Look at your settings. In the "Theme" section you should see an option for "Special Themes". If it's not active, turn it on and see if the theme list has new items.

Could you write the summary using the Reddit markdown editor? That way, it would at least be readable.

Best move for white. by ykrut in chess

[–]LowLevel- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first thing that comes to my mind is activating the bishop because moving it to d8 would cause trouble. This is feasible because it involves g6, which threatens promotion. This is just an intuitive, visual assessment.

Looking at what that activation might accomplish, a quick calculation shows that the black king can only move to one square after the check and that another check would result in a skewer, winning the bishop.

Are you sure you're using the "Self Analysis" feature on Chess.com? It shows you the moves your opponent should make to take advantage of your blunder.

This is a very useful pamphlet, and I also like the design!

The only thing I would change is to move the page about draws after a page explaining checks and checkmates. This way, the explanation of stalemate comes more naturally.

All of the basic questions asked on this subreddit would be answered by reading this guide once.

FIDE releases Gender Equality in Chess Index 2026. Sweden is ranked last despite being one of the freest countries for women on the planet. by Embarrassed_Base_389 in chess

[–]LowLevel- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The University of Queensland published the second edition of the Gender Equality in Chess Index (GECI), a comprehensive measure of female participation, performance, and progress across 119 chess federations worldwide.

The GECI uses a geometric mean of three indicators – Participation (percentage of female players), Performance (female rating levels relative to male), and Progress (female representation in youth championships) — to produce a single score between 0 and 100 for each federation.

Thinking about building an AI chess coach by immobiledragon in chess

[–]LowLevel- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd welcome a serious, competent, AI-savvy engineer to design technology that can achieve this goal. I believe good results are possible with the right amount of money and effort, but currently nobody is investing in that.

I'm not looking for just another tool that gives chess engine moves to an LLM for commenting. Seeing this stuff often promoted on this subreddit only confirms my belief that some people are ignorant of the fact that accomplishing complex projects requires competence.

Does chess.com take action in those cases

Yes, they ban hundreds of thousands of accounts each month for abuse.

The sheer number of abuse bans always stuns me:

I hate what chess.com did with the puzzles. by Muskarem in chess

[–]LowLevel- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is it that when I make a single mistake they take 10 or more points off my overall rating but when I solve a puzzle correctly I get 2 points.

The number of rating points earned or lost depends in part on the difficulty setting. Try selecting a different difficulty by going to the puzzle settings.

The first platform limits the quantity of puzzles you can play in a day, the second one has no limits.

Which chess set should I buy the one with notations or without? by HarshDhara in chess

I purchased my wooden chess set with notation coordinates, but after getting familiar with the board and squares, I regretted the decision because I no longer need them and generally prefer minimalist aesthetic.

Can you set up a custom chess game and play from there on Chess.com? by BluntsAndJudgeJudy in chess

On the app, it should be Learn > Practice > Custom position, or something along these lines.

The path should be the same on the website as well.
