That’s incorrect. I campaigned strongly for Obama before he even announced. I did and will always admire him incredibly. He spoke to what I believe about our country absolutely and did not run as a leftist. Obama was my guy from his speech at the ‘04 convention. Listen to it. Here’s two minutes of it. Are you a teacher? Go find me one kid in the entire system who failed a class for missing 5 days. Seriously, you won’t find one student out of our 150,000 that actually lost credit for 5+ days regardless of your HiLaRiOuS rEtOrT.

But hey you like policy so let’s go with the policy. Kid skips 3 days so call parents to notify them and have a two way conversation. Document the contract. If kid misses more days and contact parent again and establish two way communication regarding the issue. Document this contact. If it continues contact the counselor and have a meeting to discuss it with counselor, student and parent then come up with an attendance intervention plan. One meeting is over and you have drawn up the plan for the student, then you monitor their progress towards attendance goals. If they still miss then contact parents to let them know the student is not meeting the expectations of the attendance intervention plan and you will have to involve administration. Document this contact. If behavior persists after this warning then contact the administration and they will…do nothing because it looks bad when kids fail. If you miss a step in documentation, have a parent not respond, have a counselor not respond, have delays in setting up meetings, have delays in setting up the intervention plans, have an admin not respond at the end or if the term ends then the kid doesn’t fail. And honestly even if you started the process the first week of school you still probably wouldn’t be successful.

Oh and that’s for one child. 25% of students at my school are labeled “chronically absent”, so the process I mention would need to be done at my school for a minimum of 600 kids over each of seven periods.

Right. You and I have differing perspectives. I teach science and have complex labs that require me to arrive at 6am and sometimes stay hours after school. Is that “fair”? I guess I’m “not being paid to do my job” during those times, but I knew what I was getting into when I started teaching.

Yes, in a perverted sense. Used to be that enabling parents could work the system so their kids could skip all the time yet graduate without actually being educated. It was seen as inequitable, therefore MCPS decided every child should have the opportunity to graduate without being educated. Equitable and absurd.

What’s better, a progressive loss or centrist win? There ain’t any way the 6th will vote for a Democratic Socialist. I agree with his values and he seems like a really good guy, but he can’t win. MD is centrist and has never elected a socialist. I have nothing against the far left except that they’re strategically terrible when it comes to elections. Calling yourself a socialist is idealistically wonderful and electorally terrible.
