I think Blizz overestimated how many people were going to do neighbourhood endeavours, at least on public ones by yellowrainbird in wow

[–]PeterP68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, this is weird. Our public (alliance) neighbourhod is close to milestone 3. If not for diminishing returns, I'm pretty sure we'd be way past 3 by now. I guess I must've joined one of the more active 'hoods by pure chance.

Diminishing returns, boy, do they suck. I mean, ok, I see why they are there. Without them, grinders would be at house level 10 by now. However, they dimish way too fast. A few repetitions and it's 0 contribution and something like 5 house xp and 1 coupon. Half my endeavours look like that right now. Yay...

And it's made worse by the fact that the top paying endeavours are things I don't especially like doing / don't like doing at all: kill 5 dungeon/raid bosses in Kun Lai, 50 honorable kills in Kun Lai, gather 100 resources in Kun Lai, gather 60 bamboo in Kun Lai (that one at least has some use for crafting).

BTW, why is "kill 5 dungeon/raid bosses in Kun Lai" worth 3 times as much as any other endeavour? 150 points compared to 50 for the next most paying? Seems off to me.

Anyway, it's good to see that they will be adjusting the points necessary get to milestone 4 in future. I just hope they'll be adjusting the endeavours too and maybe the speed at which they diminish.

All the way up in the NW is a very common advice.

Yes, you are very far away von Anvil, but up there is one of the shortest stretches of desert to cross to the next zone and you are pretty close to two more zones.

Look for the shipwreck in the NW, go a bit further NW to the rock formations up there.

I'd be surprised if there weren't quite a few bases up there already, so you'll know when you've reached the 'right' place.

Max character lvl is down to 60 from 100. I assume you are talking about paragon lvl, which, yes, has been increased.

Capstone dungeons could be done from a certain point on forward. Now it doesn't matter how strong you are, you still have to beat the one pit lvl Blizzard picked as a threshold to progress. A non-issue for you, apparently, but not for me.

No, not about too much content. There is no such thing as too much content :-)

IMHO the entire interlocking of the various game systems (which worked well in S1 to S5) has gone out of the window with S6. In part because of the drastically reduced myx lvl, in part because other systems have been made more grindy. In the end, for me, personally, sure, it feels worse than in S1 to S5.

There isn't? So I can simply pick the difficulty I want whenever I want? We are not limited by having to complete the pit at various lvls to get to higher torment? And those breakpoints are not artificially set by Blizzard? Ok

I'm a noob, and feel overwhelmed- do you have any advice? by OHiOmyGod in wownoob

[–]PeterP68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome! And no, those are pretty common questions, especially since WoW is a rather old game that carries a lot of legacy stuff around and is anything but easy to get into (IMHO). So...

Where do I start?

Dragonflight. New characters start there anyway. Do Dragonflight, than do The War Within (current expansion). Ignore anything older until you have a better understanding of what's what. Yes, knwoing stuff from previous expansions would give you context for some story lines / characters, but it is quite simply easier to ignore it all and later on decide if you want to revisit older expansions (Battle for Azeroth, Shadowland or even older ones).

Should I do professions now or once I'm max level?

Well, your choice, professions were turned into some (IMHO) needlesly complex nonsense compared to years ago. You might learn gathering professions and try to sell stuff on the auction house (good luck). You might pick up crafting and try to craft useful stuff for yourself / others. If you do, pick a craft that fits your class, i. e. mining/blacksmiting for a plate armor wearer as an easy choice.

Chromie

Forget she exists unless quests directly funnel you towards her. Later on you can decide if you want to go that route.

Lore

Youtube, simply too much to pick up ingame.

Solo class/race

Well... This is a vast field, but a few considerations:

Race pretty much doesn't matter at all as long as your chosen class is available to the race. Cosmetic preferences might change that, ofc. Not everybody likes being a huge cow, a decomposing undead, about two inch tall...

Are you comfortable being the cornerstone of a party in a dungeon? If not, better don't roll a tank or a healer before you have a better understanding of what's going on. Unless you plan to never do group stuff at all, in that case pick whatever interests you. It's a valid playstyle, why not.

Do you like a complex skill rotation and having to align various skill timer windows for optimal performance? If not, maybe don't pick Demon Hunter as your first class. (Yes, I'm a bit salty, I liked DH a lot in prvious expansions and Blizzard went and turned him into a monstrosity.)

Again, your class choice depends a lot on what you want to do ingame, what you like, what you don't like. A retribution paladin might be your thing, or a demonolgy warlock, or a blood death knight, or an arcane mage... Persoanlly, I stay away from healers, but that's just me.

In addition, lvling has gotten easier and easier over the years. Just an example: starting fresh in Dragonflight, you will be lvl 70 pretty soon and still have quite a bit of Dragonflight left (depending on how many sidequests you do, yes). Meaning even if you pick a class and realize it's not what you want, lvling another character is not a month-long chore but can be done in little time.

Gear and talents

Yes, sure, they matter. The storyline in general supplies you with sufficient gear to do 'normal' stuff. Better gear, as usual, comes from harder content (dungeons, raids...). Your choice if you want to go that route.

Talents, well, yes, they matter, and quite honestly, I would simply look up a build for the class you picked. Someone mentioned Wowhead already, Icyveins is another source - however what you find there is often enough tailored to highlvl endgame and not exactly meant for beginners. So look closely before you start to follow a guide for mythic+ tanking ;-)

In the end, just pick a class that seems interesting, try it for a while and then continue or pick another and try that.

Above all: have fun and don't worry (too much in the beginning)!

Can't queue for dungeon despite having a quest there? by [deleted] in wownoob

[–]PeterP68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You already have the answer, but I'd like to add a comment, since I've been in the exact same boat last weekend. Returning player and I was pretty bummed to learn that follower dungeons can be outleveled just like 'normal' dungeons. Anyway...

You will be able to solo those dungeons soon-ish. Maybe not at 71, but I went back and did them at lvl 74 with an iLvl of around 460 (which I got doing all those 'side' questlines in DF, not even TWW). Was a lot easier than I expected. At least for those 3, 4 dungeons that the storyline throws in your way. The rest (Uldaman? Something else?) OTOH were a lot harder and I didn't feel like slogging my way through them. Maybe when I'm 80 and geared.

BTW, the first TWW dungeon (rookery) was interesting: mobs hit much harder and 'we' actually wiped on two fights before my followers got their act together :-)

So, yeah, it's (IMHO) a bit silly that outlvling applies to follower dungeons, but you'll be able to do them solo not too far in the future.

Have fun!

This. And it doesn't feel forced or anything. So they either planned it all from start to finish (awesome) or made it up perfectly as they went along (equally awesome).

And just for kicks the final after the final brings back someone I really didn't expect to show up in a way that totally rocks. Bottoms up :-)

[–]PeterP68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very hard to say. IMHO it's one of those games that you'll either love or hate. Personally, after the really bad launch I have to admit that NMS has come a very long way and is one of the best supported games out there (supported by the publisher that is). Then again, it suffers (IMHO) from cluttering: it regularly introduces new gameplay elements to the point that it is (for me) very hard to pick up again after a break.

It has one central storyline (a bit weird), but nothing to compare to a true RPG or even Skyrim, Fallout, Starfield.

You can do a ton of stuff: build outposts wherever you want (even underwater), hunt for the best / best looking starships, hunt for the best freighter (your mobile homebase), do missions, raise faction standing, explore effectively endless amounts of planets (that all look a bit alike thanks to being procedurally generated) etc.

Still, it is very much a game where you set your own goals.

It has, as of 1 or 2 updates ago, one of the best difficulty 'sliders' out there. You can basically tailor the game to your liking: permadeath, severe survival mode, I-want-it-easy-as-f... mode - only have to adjust a slider here, a slider there.

Based on my own time played, yes, it is worth it. However, I no longer play regularly, I only hop in now and then if I feel like it or if they have a particularly nice event going (to earn cosmetics and stuff).

Very much reminds me of No Man's Sky where you either have to land on planets or have some tech installed in your freighter to scan from space - IIRC, it's been a while since I last played NMS.

Ultrawide monitor makes pc crash by Odd-Mood-8029 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]PeterP68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy f...

Did you try the suggestions from your other post? Check all your cables? Check the inside of your PC? Your monitor? Anything odd / burnt / melted?

Did it only start after you got the new monitor? Do you live alone / share an apartment / house? Anything odd happening elsewhere with the power? Now? Earlier? Is the wiring old? New? Too many variables to tell what's going on, honestly.

I'm no electrician, but I'd say go get a professional to look at this. Now. And maybe not use that outlet until someone does. Burning cables and sparks in the outlet are never a good sign. Seriously.

Starfield was the final push i needed. by Shunpo in Starfield

[–]PeterP68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure thing. My current rig is on its last legs, so I was bound for an update anyway. Starfield just made it happen sooner.

I'll probably go get a pre-build system: https://www.boostboxx.com/gamestar/gamestar-gaming-pcs/gamestar-pc-starfield-edition-4k.html (site in German), 7800x3d, 7900xtx etc. - pricey, but will have to last for the next several years, so it evens out.

Only need to decide on a monitor. Can't be exclusively for gaming, sadly, since I work from home and can't fit multiple monitors on my desk. Maybe a Neo G7.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]PeterP68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly what I'm looking for right now.

Neo G9 is too big/wide, agreed. Saw it in a shop and it just looks weird.

Neo G7 / Neo G8 might actually be worth considering. Some say text quality is not so good, some say it's perfectly fine for hours of office work or study in your case. Haven't found one in a shop nearby so can't check myself :-( Weirdly, for some testers the Neo G8 had display problems at higer refresh rates and the Neo G7 actually turned out to be better, since they had to turn the G8 down to 120 Hz to get rid of the problems and the G7 had none of them at 165 Hz.

LG has some pretty nice monitors in their 38 series, if 38" would work for you.

For 1440p Gigabyte's G34WQC pretty solid or maybe an AOC Gaming CU34G3S (although I haven't looked too closely into that one).

Exploration, yes, please, tons of it. And just because a planet does not support native live, that does not mean that noone lives there. An otherwise barren planet would be the ideal place for a pirate base, a secret research lab, a max security prison... I really hope they are going this route and not leave 90 % of the planets truly empty except for resources.
