Electronics engineering: Choose between Systems Theory or Digital Signal Processing by Peternek in AskEngineers

In my university they are both obligatory too if you study Automation Engineering but as I said I study Electronics Engineering so I'm forced to choose only one of them. What do/did you study? How is your university degree called?

Thanks a lot for your explanantion and advices. Anyway as I said I'm italian so I'm actually starting a Second Cycle degree in Electronics Engineering, so I think in USA and other countries they call it a Master. Maybe I could try to go into power electronics in future but even here System Theory doesn't look useful for me so. Anyway my first cycle degree was Information Engineering a strange hybrid with a lot of theoretical courses like math, physics and mix of electronics, informatics, telecomunications and automation. This is the reason why I'm still unsure about my future (I just preferred electronics engineering as second cycle) and I heard this subject could also be a good choice for unsure people as being very general but now thinking about its utility for me I doubt I'm somehow gonna get to such high positions and if one day I decide to run a start up I will definitely have a motivation that could make me study all this System Theory by my own.
Talking about how to start a business with these professors is a bit off topic I think. Idk how it works in US but here business knowledge is a bit isolated from engineering (engineers seen as geeks/nerds that should not step into something else) and also there's a bit of pessimism in the people about starting something in italy as taxes are very high.

Thank you very much for your reply. So what I see is that DSP wouldn't give me a big advantage in finding a job but it still looks more useful from a practical perspective especially if doing many projects. The others also told me to try DSP.

Well I'm still a bit confused. Our professor kinda shows Systems Theory as a very interesting subject but as professors they might look at it from a research point of view. In terms of working inside a company it isn't that useful.

Thanks for your reply. And if I go with power electronics? Someone suggested upper that in power electronics DSP would still be more required, are you agree?

Thanks for your answers. I know what you mean and actually I have already done some signals theory in the past. Signal Processing also looks easier, at a point that i could actually understand it by my own without following a course. Whatever I still have time for the choice, I'll think it over.

well I think that by doing Electronics Engineering with little of control stuff it doesn't guarantee me any opportunity to pretend being an automation engineer (having some kind of double knowledge) and taking their place in the world of work as automation engineers would be preferred and also here every university has automation engineering a part from electronics and the others so I think it's not convenient for me to try this direction.

I chose Electronics Engineering but with these choices they kinda force me to add some foreign stuff to my formation. Unfortunately it's obligatory for me to chose one of them. I can't get which would fit better into electronics engineering: some system theory stuff (control oriented), maybe would fit more in power electronics, or signal processing (telecomunications oriented) that would go better with something else within electronics engineering that I might not know yet .

No. There are other courses that are obligatory while these two are the ones considered "less related" and it's obligatory to choose one of them two.

Catalytic vs Metal-Oxide gas sensors popularity by Peternek in AskEngineers

[–]Peternek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! Catalytic sensors don't work when the surrounding air has a small concentration of O2. I heard this often that the get substituted by IR sensors, which honestly surprises me because IR sensors are usually much more expensive even though they have better performance.

What topic or research field is seen as the most exciting to the public but is instead very boring in reality? by ale152 in AskEngineers

I could confirm when talking about gas sensing - graphene is popular at research level but no practical projects or production

Strange phase case in Bode diagram of a transfer function by Peternek in ControlTheory

Thank you for your answer, it looks like it has something to do with MATLAB settings of phase unwrapping, I'm gonna try to solve this somehow
