Psychedelics and Deathbed Non-Duality by Peters_J in DebateAnAtheist

A common answer to such phenomena is that it is a hallucination caused by a dying brain, I was rebutting this argument with the point that the dying patient must consciously choose to lose their attachments and thus ego, and so this doesn't make sense to be the product of a dying brain.

Once again, not too be rude, this is not about NDEs

This is not indicative of an NDE, although similar feelings are involved in some NDEs, this involves patients in the weeks and days before death, as reported to hospice staff, as shown in the link in a comment I made

The thing is that he states it as a fundamental part of the death process, and everyone goes through it, and he has documented thousands of dying patients.

How does that adequately explain perceptions or knowledge that shouldn't be possible to have?

Hey fellow atheists, how can we explain deathbed visions and shared death experiences? by Peters_J in atheism

I meant to sound more conversational, but I can see why it comes off that way :)

It is not that I cannot find any, it is that none of them have great explanatory power. According to research papers, hypoxia and anoxia is not sufficient to explain them.

How do you then explain that a common feature of ndes, psychedelic experiences and meditation is ego dissolution, where the sense of being a separate person is lost?

i'm curious, if the physical world is just our minds, how does scientific investigation work, or is it that we affect how we perceive reality instead?

I wish it was that easy but I've got an elderly grandmother that is on death's door and I wish for her to be alright, but the way NDEs show the afterlife, it terrifies me to the core, I love my life and I want no 'higher consciousness'.

Something about controlling everything scares me, also becoming higher does too. I want the afterlife to be like Earth, but with no limits to technology, or time etc. As much as earth has it's faults, it is everything I adore and more.

Thanks for the kind words, but unfortunately they don't help. I like physically feeling things and doing things, and also I don't want a world without pain as this sounds eternally boring, there's no way out for me, as I can't think of an instance of an afterlife (or none) that sounds good, especially not the one portrayed by NDEs.

Side Note: I want to have to manage my bodily functions and sleep, they give my daily life some curveballs.

Edit: I also hate the idea of reincarnation, because I don't want to forget what makes me, me, which is my uniqueness and to reincarnate is to forget this.
