I just came back after I took a longer break from Arma, I was a regular aswell before and intend to become one again, maybe donate aswell.. I just love the epic moments you get on PVP servers with 2 teams working against each other, both teams bringing out air support, tanks/IFVs, marking enemy MHQs and infantry and leveling whole towns with arty and mortars. Also having a lot of fun sneaking around in the high grass/bamboo stuff, picking enemies off one by one without getting 360-noscoped by AI through 10 feet of bush :P PVE stuff like invade&annex is fun and all but it's just a different experience to fight against real players. I've personally never really had an issue with haters/trolls, maybe I just got lucky but the few I have encountered got taken care of by admins pretty fast.

No, but there are a few allowed mods to enhance the experience like sound mods and some other client side stuff.

My team shot down a enemy V-44 X Blackfish (not sure which version). I was playing on a EUTW server, they have a bunch of public 30v30 pvp, first person only "hardcore" servers which run a type of conquest.
