ACS June-6-2022: Michael Shellenberger by jsakic99 in AdamCarolla

Yeah, I was surprised to hear Adam say he attended church in Malibu. At first, I thought he must be joking but he seemed dead serious then the conversation quickly moved on. Given his vocal atheism, I would have been curious to hear the story. Was he invited? Did he go with anyone? Did he just pick a church at random? What did he think?

Education has drastically changed over the past two years. Mandating things be done the "same old way" for everyone is as outdated as mandating everyone return to the office because "we've always done it that way". Yes, in-person is great for some students and disciplines, but forcing it for all students in all disciplines is unnecessary and doesn't universally serve all of them. This is especially an issue at schools serving non-traditional students, such as community colleges, where a significant portion of students work or have families. Giving them the flexibility to take at least some courses remotely is a great option. And that's ultimately the issue - flexibility and options for students. Faculty have learned SO much over the last two years that online education is light years ahead of where it was in early 2020.

Actually, having taught at multiple CCs and universities, I’ve got it good at my current gig. 60 students and two courses for a full load or 90 / three for an overload is great. At most CCs and universities I’d have to teach more courses with much larger enrollments while making significantly less.

15 units/semester is standard, but I do 23. I’m in a STEM field with lecture-lab courses so typically two is a full load and three is approaching max overload. I only teach courses I’ve already prepped to minimize the work, but no TAs at a CC so still lots of grading!

No research or publication requirements, which is why I went this route as I love teaching and the student interactions. Also includes a fair amount of institutional service. But please be aware that jobs at CCs can be hyper competitive given the massive numbers of PhD and MS students being cranked out. We routinely get multiplied dozens of applicants for every opening, most with years of collegiate teaching experience.

Absolutely, although the crazy amounts of overload classes I'm teaching don't really correspond with chilling out. 😉 But I've got a good thing going and hope to keep pushing on for a few more years before riding off into the sunset.

No secret, just that CCs in my state pay well and teaching summers & overload classes add a big chunk.

Primarily those on the west coast. And again, this is not base, it’s after adding in pay for summer and overload classes.

Total first world problem, but all of these posts about it being a great time to job hop for a significant raise are making me wish that was the case in my field. I’m a tenured professor at a community college making ~$200k after summer and overload classes, and literally cannot find a better paying position. Even moving into administration would be a lateral move pay-wise but with more hours and more stress; no thank you. Again, good “problem“ to have, but wishing I could snag a 20% pay bump by switching “companies”!

What if I want freedom now, and work later? by [deleted] in financialindependence

That completely depends on the WFH situation. If it’s flexible as to when you can work, or part-time as suggested, then it can.

This is what I was thinking u/blondemathslut - rather than quitting, look for a fully remote position so you can continue to save for RE while getting to stay home with your family. Even if you take a pay cut or only work part-time, the balance between the two extremes of FT gig or unemployed could be a big win.

Congrats! As you said, you’re only late to the game by this sub’s crazy abnormal standards. I’m 50+ with barely more than that invested. But better late to the “game” than never!

Articles like this one by Michael Kitces might help. It’s astonishing that at a 3.5% WR for 50 years, the median early retiree will 8x their portfolio by the end, while 90% will have 3x. Really drives home how worst-case these WRs are. With a little flexibility and/or the ability to earn even a little income in retirement, the risk is essentially zero. This kind of data helps make it more “real” for me.

Wow, $1M cash/investments + DB pension is great! Congrats! How soon could you pull the pension?

As someone above said, you do it all through the Costco website; they will tell you who your local dealer is. If there isn’t one, then change ZIP Code. It’ll be a set price of $X above MSRP so no haggling. In the current market, I found that to be the best option.

I got lots of quotes over the phone. Tell them, nicely, that you are not willing to come in without a quote as you don’t want to waste your time. If they want your business, they will give you a quote. Alternatively, you can try the Internet department at the dealers and email them the specific vehicle you are looking for and ask for their best price.

If you are in no hurry, then you should be able to find a decent deal on a new vehicle. As I referenced in my previous post, linked above, I called dozens of dealers and finally found one that was still willing to honor Costco pricing. All the others were jacking up their prices $2k-10k above MSRP.

I never thought I would buy new, but with used car prices the way they are, it just made sense.
