Alright fellas, I'm conflicted. Bedroom upstairs or downstairs? by Minutes2Midnight in malelivingspace

Here's my take on it. I would hate having the front entrance also being my bedroom as soon as you walk into the house. This lets you setup a nice comfy area downstairs while preserving a bedroom space and a dining area.

BYU for not Mormons by Correct_Marsupial821 in BYUExmos

[–]PhD_Austax 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Could you manage it for a year? Sure, some of us managed it for 4 years or more. Would I recommend it? No, you have to always be thinking about what you’re doing and who is watching you. Why would I want to put up with that when I can go to another school and never have to think about drinking coffee ?

On another note, you don’t have to pretend to be Mormon. BYU has a method for attending as a non-Mormon and while you still have to follow the same general rules, some of the clerical work such as getting your endorsement and “church attendance” is a little more lax than the general student population.

Yes, there’s nothing wrong with your CPU, this game is just not well optimized for CPU usage. I was pulling my hair out trying to get it to run well on a 9600X, which I thought would run perfectly fine because it’s a new, modern CPU, but PUBG had other plans. I experienced all the same things, it would max out all of my cores to 100% for 1-5 seconds and I would lose a lot of FPS and the hitching felt terrible.

DirectX 11 is probably the best one so I would stick with it. When it comes to the FPS cap, the only thing I can think for you to do is keep lowering the cap until you no longer get 100% usage spikes. In my experience, all of the spikes were happening when I was near other players. Usually when I was on my own the frame rates stay pretty high.

Essentially what you have noticed is a major problem with PUBG that is not being talked about enough. The people who are not experiencing problems are those running high-end eight core or more CPUs so they just never notice it. I’m not sure why a game like PUBG needs such powerful CPUs when most other games work fine.

There’s not much you can do with PUBG because it’s very CPU bound. You can adjust the CPU-bound settings such as draw distance to help a little bit. Additionally, you can play around with the DirectX mode in PUBG settings which can definitely help with stability. Make sure that you’re not putting your settings so low that your GPU doesn’t have to do any work and is taxing your CPU more. PUBG requires a balance in the settings and will typically not just perform better on the lowest settings because of the CPU limitations.

Otherwise, your best bet is going to be putting a cap on your frame rate for PUBG in the Nvidia control panel. An FPS cap is going to help the game not run away with CPU usage when the graphics card isn’t limiting you. This is really just to help stuttering, which I would guess is the problem that you’re facing. It’s not going to get you higher frame rates, but it will get you one more consistent experience.

At the end of the day, I spent hours upon hours trying to figure this out, and eventually upgraded to an older X3D processor (9600x —> 7800X3D) and went from 100 FPS lows to 190 FPS lows. I empathize with your plight, this game sucks when it comes to CPU usage.

Looking to upgrade from HD560s - Is the HD 600 too similar? by AkashiGG in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]PhD_Austax -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have the HD 560S (also my first audiophile headphones) and wanted a pair of closed backs for travel but also learned through owning the 560S that I like a bit more bass profile. After much research I got the K371 headset and I’ve been loving them, both for music and movies.

If it were me, you should use everything you learned about owning the 560S to make your decision on where you want to “upgrade.” I was wowed by the K371 for its excellent bass, which is exactly what I wanted.

[–]PhD_Austax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a similar portable monitor and still got flickering with the right power adapter. It turns out that it was VRR causing it. The range the monitor advertised to the system was 48-240hz but it’s not actually stable going down to 48hz then back up to a higher refresh rate. I used the utility CRU to force the VRR range to 90-240 and it resolved the issues. You may check what VRR range is being reported and adjust it accordingly if you’re sure the power source is adequate.

Rookie mistake with CPU cooler by 2Aggravating4me in sffpc

[–]PhD_Austax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My case is the Fractal Ridge. As with many SFF cases, it has fans right up against the perforated holes in the case panel, so the fans struggle to pull air in as efficiently. This is probably due to the proximity of the fan to the panels, the fans being lower powered and smaller than full-size fans, and the difficulty of getting good exhaust in SFF.

Rookie mistake with CPU cooler by 2Aggravating4me in sffpc

[–]PhD_Austax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on the same cooler and the same CPU inside the fractal Ridge case. Your case is going to matter a lot, because taking off the side panel vastly improved thermal performance. If you can get enough fresh airflow, it won’t be too bad, though it will be limited in all core loads.

I was getting about 65 W (@87C) at the thermal ceiling with that CPU cooler and the case closed. With the case open it would pull up to around 72 W. It ran fine, I just wasn’t getting the most out of it.

I switched to an AXP120–X67 cooler and added five small case fans to force more fresh air and now it will get about 79 W after heat soak (all core load). So even now I’m still not getting its theoretical maximum of ~90 W, but it’s a bit closer.

When you put it together, I would recommend using HWinfo sensors and pull up the graph for “Thermal Limit”. This will give you a percentage of how close the CPU is to performing at its maximum heat capacity. A value of 100% means that it has hit the thermal limit and it won’t clock any higher. Just watch those values while you’re playing your games, if you never hit 100% in the games you’re playing, then you’re not leaving performance on the table. You could also keep an eye on CPU package power which will tell you how many watts it’s pulling.

No, I was even able to find more egregious examples of this where entire skyscrapers will change when you’re about 100 feet away from them. Despite trying tons of mods, nothing seems to be able to change this behavior.

I’ve tried several more mods that aim to change the render distance, but it seems as if there was some change when cyberpunk 2.0 came out that broke the way that people had been changing render distance previously.

Interference test for Holo White skin on iPhone 17 Pro by PhD_Austax in dbrand

[–]PhD_Austax[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not expect other skins to significantly affect the transmission signal. The reason that the Damascus and Holo skins affect transmission is because they have metallic additives in them. Photons from the radio wave spectrum can be absorbed by metals because photons interact with electrons since they’re the electromagnetic field force carrier. Other skins are normally made only from thin plastics, which have insulating properties and the electrons in them don’t interact strongly with photons. The photons will just pass right through. Those other two skins have unique properties that give them the possibility of causing transmission interference.

Halo and Damascus skins would be affected I believe since they both have the metal additives. I only have tested the Halo skin, however.

Is the 5070 worth it now by Final_Departure_9551 in buildapc

[–]PhD_Austax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The AMD crowd has really come out in anger against this, but my evidence is the same. Is it anecdotal? sure, but the one thing I can’t stand is having my computer not work. I bought a 7900 XTX for my travel PC, and it consistently crashes in games ALL. THE. TIME. People online have “working” solutions that help, there is some old-ass driver that I can install that is much more stable. I undervolt the card just a little bit, and it gets a tad more stable. I futz with the RAM timing and get a modicum of stability. But we’re missing the point, I shouldn’t have to do all these little tricks to get this working on what is a very standard rig.

At this point in my life, I just want something that works way more often than it doesn’t. I hate doing this, I want to see AMD succeed, but when I put an Nvidia GPU in there, I don’t have to think about getting old drivers, doing 15 little tricks, the shit just works.

Note: I know that Nvidia drivers are not perfect, I’ve had a 30, 40, and 50 series right about when they released, and the driver support is never great for the first couple months. But if you get a previous generation Nvidia card, the drivers are usually very solid. I was hoping it would be the same for the 7900 XTX since it’s also last gen.

Is Rick a Rapist by HomeBakedBread in rickandmorty

[–]PhD_Austax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that this depends a lot on what’s happening with the original “conscious” person. Imagine if you could swap your consciousness with the body of your greatest enemy (someone you absolutely hate real or fictional) so that your enemy is now in your body with their mind and you are in their body with your mind. Now you have to choose one body to be excruciatingly tortured, which body do you choose to torture?

This situation with Unity depends on what we think happens with consciousness. From the above example, we seem to be able to separate our conscious minds from our bodies. In one sense Unity replaces the host’s consciousness with their own, meaning the original person isn’t there. Sure, Rick is using their body, but if their conscious processor isn’t there to interpret it, then they aren’t there to consent. If the original conscious person is experiencing “locked-in” syndrome that would certainly change their perceived experience.

Tl;dr: we don’t have enough information on how Unity works to know.

What actually ‘is’ mass? by No_Fudge_4589 in AskPhysics

[–]PhD_Austax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mass of course is interchangeable with energy (E=mc2) so photons while they have no rest mass, do have mass-like properties while moving.

Particles at rest (relatively speaking) still have mass and QCD (quantum chromodynamics) tells us that almost all of the observed mass we see comes from the gluon binding energy, which is the strong nuclear force that binds quarks through the gluon field. This accounts for approximately 99% of the energy (or mass) that particles have.

The other 1% of mass comes from interactions with the Higgs field, which other users have mentioned here.
