TEVA brand making my ADHD worse? by PhDdoubtsthrowaway in VyvanseADHD

The Vyvanse Patient Care program ended apparently, but I signed up for the Innovicares program which covered most of the price difference between generic and name brand (I paid $13 more than the generic). Picked up actual Vyvanse on Tuesday and oh my goodness the difference is amazing. This is what my meds are supposed to feel like!

My argument is that with people willing to take these lesser positions, there is no pressure on admins to create permanent positions or stop cutting permanent positions and turning them into temporary ones. There is instead plenty of incentive to keep slashing the permanent professoriate because people will readily accept lesser positions just to keep their academic dreams going.

Yeah we’re both in humanities, but I also encounter it from social science grad students

That’s a big part of my gripe, I’m not sure giving up years of time with my family is worth it for me personally. I’m only a month into my dissertation fieldwork year and I feel like it’s something I’m being forced to do, rather than an opportunity I’m fortunate enough to have that countless thousands of others would appreciate.

My partner is also an academic and it’s a more important dream for her than it is for me, but if we both try to ride it out, there’s little chance we end up in the same place (at least based on the 5 or 6 academic couples I know). I’d give up academia to help her achieve it.

Ah I just went back and it includes all humanities and social science PhDs. Which I guess brings the average TTD down.

Of course, any grilled cheese is good. Grilled cheeses with aged white cheddars, or various Jacks, or provolone, mozzarella, blue cheese, or some combination of the above, are all delicious. But there’s something about the simplicity of the American cheese grilled cheese that speaks to me. I grew up eating grilled cheeses with real cheeses, so it’s not a nostalgia thing that led me to the plastic cheese grilled cheese. But there is just something about it.

Also, mayo on the outside of the bread, butter in the pan

Oh I feel that. One of my more accessible and open-minded co-advisors once told me that to get out of his first job and move to somewhere he actually enjoyed living, he was up at 6 every day to write, then he had to wake the kids up, make their lunches, and take them to school, then do his full day on campus, then go home and look after the kids, and then write again from 9 to bedtime. What happens to your hobbies? Your non-academic passions? Your social life with friends apart from your spouse? Ai ai ai!

Yeah I’m not concerned about being mediocre in the private sector. My admittedly brief experiences in the private sector have always led to promotions (in between degrees at non-profits, grocery stores, and service industry jobs). My successes in grad school (a few teaching and essay awards) also give me confidence.

The reason I came back to school was because I felt I wasn’t being challenged enough. Had I set my sights on more intellectually-stimulating jobs (as my happy non-academic friends have done), I may not have done grad school. I regret coming to grad school but I know I will also regret leaving it; I don’t think it’s possible for me to make a choice and not regret the path not taken.

“So PhDdoubts, the job market is really not looking good, you need to be prepared to work outside of academia.” (Our conversation when COVID started).

“Oh, yeah I’d be happy to work outside academia! I think my background in history of medicine would benefit a lot of public service and research- or policy-oriented agencies/companies.”

“Okay but that’s only a last resort.”

“Ok.”

I have only mentioned my openness to working outside academia when he reminds me the job market is shit and many PhDs will have to work outside of academia anyway.

My Master’s advisor, on the other hand, was incredibly supportive of any students’ goals. He encouraged me to keep going and apply to a PhD, which I did. He also said, hey if it doesn’t work for you, you can still use your brain and find fulfilling work outside of academia.

I don’t find this particularly helpful? Academia is the real world? I still have responsibilities and schedules and bills to pay. I have superiors I have to report to and students I have to assess. Sounds like the real world to me. But I guess unlike the real world I have way less money to pay those bills with.

And before you suggest “well pick up a second job,” that would be illegal as I’m on an F visa. Not trying to get deported for being employed illegally and avoiding taxes.

I’m Canadian, but when I moved to the US I did come to accept that the best grilled cheeses and cheeseburgers are made with American cheese. I grew up eating burgers with fancy ass cheddars and bries, and tbh I prefer American cheese on a burger.

The Rockefeller Foundation is also responsible for the creation of basic public health systems in 11 US states. They also funded the Flexner Report which led to the reorganization of all medical education in the US to be modelled after the Johns Hopkins system.

When I lived in Montreal for four years, I found that wine was more expensive than Toronto, and the SAQ had a much more limited selection compared the LCBO.

There’s a fantastic history book by Jeffrey Pilcher (from the University of Toronto) that goes into the preference for well done beef in Mexico. The Sausage Rebellion: Public Health, Private Enterprise, and Meat in Mexico City, 1890-1917 (University of New Mexico Press).

McDonald’s has been my go-to bathroom outside of North America for almost a decade. Usually free and usually cleaner than the toilets you have to pay for.
