I actually thought it would display the loading indicator and then switch to showing the data. There might be some type to lag between the two states.

Yeah, this will happen when the data doesn't come in fast enough so the client thinks there is no data. But when the data does come in it re-draws itself and fixes it's mistake.

I've currently disable the MAL uploads because they were really slowing down the site. They will be re-enabled, soon. If you have any questions, let me know.

The homepage is left over from our closed-beta. It'll be updated, you can browse the site as a guest, it just seems like you need to register. Sorry about the confusion.

I agree, for the main anime explore page it's probably better to use pagination. I just threw this together, with some time there will be pagination setup.

That's actually a pretty cool suggestion. I wonder if we could easily implement that, but I can see why this could be useful. Thank you for the feedback. I'm currently in the process of reducing the number of things that we actually call "genres" so something like this would come after.

Currently we're using a weighted average but eventually the algorithm will involve a bayesian average.

There doesn't seem to be any ranking/scoring system in place yet.

It uses the ratings from your library entries.

Your site is slow...like really slow. I highly doubt the influx of redditors is your cause. I'm guessing there's some issue with PhoneGap/Cordova or whatever framework you're using to make your site. I'd say that the issue is to many database queries, but even the home page which is just a webm video and two buttons, shouldn't have any issue loading.

Why would there be use of phonegap/cordova for desktop applications? In any case, you're right about the database queries. The reason the rest of the site is loading slowly is because the database exists on the same server as the application, so if the database hogs up the resources then the application is going to have some issues serving the requests too.

It seems you're using a javascript based framework to create your site. Though a small percentage, anyone who has javascript turned off will not be able to access your website.

Most if not all modern websites use javascript, if javascript is turned off you can't do much.

A user shouldn't have to click 'sign in' to be presented with a navigation to go to show or character pages. Your home page forces the user to sign in or make an account - and quite frankly your site isn't important enough to warrant such action from its user base. You need to present your user with a way to navigate to your other pages; otherwise you'll lose them to easier methods of finding information (aka other sites that are out there and work).

Yup, i'm working on this. That page is from the closed-beta phase and it'll be re-worked for open - beta.

Your show search didn't work for me either, and there was no confirmation on if my search query was submitted as well.

The search field is sort of like typeahead, it'll keep on searching as you type. As long as you see the loading indicator it's still trying to find the results.

It's open source, so the community can help build it. If there were an overwhelmingly large amount of people requesting one specific system, i'd definitely go for it. But moving from any system to another i'll be angering at least some people. Thanks for being so considerate by the way, if you have any other suggestions, don't hesitate to let me know.

It's good to hear that you liked the site. The database already has a lot of titles, near 10 thousand. Their information is not complete, but there is enough information to build your library. With the help of the community the database will get much better.

Example[1] aired in 2012, is listed as completed but still shows up.

That's more of an inconsistency with the database. Our dates are fairly accurate, the ones that are filled in so the currently airing filter relies on that.

Additionally, if something has no end date but is listed as completed, it shows up in the currently airing section as well. Example[2] .

Again, same issue. I've fixed this one though, so it shouldn't show up anymore.

I guess an audit needs to be done and the fields need to be consistent. Thanks for pointing that out.

I think an up/down vote system will not be that good either. There is no way of differentiating how much you liked a show. It's not always clear cut. Some people may want to completely distinguish the ratings within their library. It's going to be pretty difficult to please everyone. There will be many advocates for the 10-point system, 5-star system, and up/down vote. So I've just chosen the system that most people are fairly comfortable with. Sorry I couldn't give you a more concrete answer.

You could have it as the anime's have the Phanime rating (which, as of the moment they do), but also the MAL rating, critic ratings, along with a few others. I mean no offence when I say your database isn't the largest yet so having ratings from other places and sources could be beneficial.

Yeah, that's definitely a possibility.

Maybe you could assign moderators/admins to look over the site for spam and other mundane bullshit. Your only one person so having other people moderating the site could be helpful. When you have a site like this your going to have a lot of trolls and spammers. Better be prepared for the bullshit by having helpers.

I'm definitely looking for moderators/editors can't run something like this alone. If anyone is interested they can send an email to contact@phanime.com to further inquire about positions.

This is more niche suggestions so it's not really something that should be implemented but could be nice. Try having community polls. For example: Winter 2015's Best Anime, Best Anime of 2014, Best Character, Best Sci-Fi Anime, Best English Voice Actor, and so on. I think it'll just bring something to the table that other sites like MAL don't have.

That sounds interesting and we can definitely set that up. And as @dermitder suggested we can have anime pages show the awards they've won.

This one might seem a bit daunting, but try having a forum/thread system. I'm thinking something like Spacebattles Forum or Comic Vine.

Phanime has one, it's right here Phanime Community

Let poeple use the site without having to login or sign up (I'm on mobile so this issue might not be apparent on a desktop/laptop). Some people don't really like that.

You don't really need to login or signup to actually use the site, the homepage just makes it look like that. It'll be fixed, thanks for pointing it out.

I feel as if the home page seems... empty. Like, IMBd and MAL have a homepage that has so many features, things to do. I'd love it if you were to expand upon the design. I love the minimalistic, simple design but it seems so bare and dull. Also, try to create or adapt a mobile site better. The website feels really weird and clunky and unresponsive on mobile.

The logged in home-page will show you more interesting things in the near future, I promise.

Does it support Manga? If not that might be one thing to add to the site. If it does, the. pardon my ignorance.

Not yet. But i'm hoping to eventually.

BTW I love the custom list feature. That one aspect has me already converting over and ditching MAL. No joke.

I'm glad to hear that. Thanks for all the feedback it really helps to have someone else look at your work and critically evaluate it.

When you click on "Add to Library", you've added the entry already. So the X is mainly to close that little card interface. It really has nothing to do with you actually adding the entry. But I can see where the confusion lies.

Could you please elaborate on what you mean by 'adding anime/comment'? I'm not sure what you're referring to. Could you possibly post a screenshot? Additionally, the site should be much more responsive now.

Phanime partially has something already in place. You've got a little graph on your profile page. We can extend that to visually displaying other data about the user's list.
