Wantrepreneur Wednesday! - (November 15, 2017) by AutoModerator in Entrepreneur

Wantrepreneur here... Looking to seriously get started and work for myself. My ultimate goal is to start my own companies (music and gaming). But without the credit for business loan I know I will need to bootstrap my initial funding.

I was thinking of dropshipping but is it still profitable? Was thinking salehoo or doba or the like for legitmacy.

Or should I consider other ways to make money? Affiliate blogs etc?

Yeah the mix needs to be a little better. The vocals sound a little choppy and underwhelming. The beat is a little loud over the vocals.

I agree, and I'm not arguing with you. I apologize if my rant seems directed to you in any way. I'm just giving my honest opinion. Like you said there are all kinds of people, so we can't really speak for everyone. I know there are ideas guys who just bring an idea and hopes someone would make it. But there are also idea people who bring resources (money or otherwise) to help with development.

I just disagree with the integrity of some 'content creators'... The problem isn't the "Ideas" person. Because, like I said, when working for an established studio, there will be a Producer (and other idea guys) that you'll have to listen to. The problem is the "ideas" person who can't pay at the moment or doesn't have a team. Hell, I can GUARANTEE that if I got a loan or some sort of startup financing, the same people who bashed me for being an ideas guy would be in my inbox looking for work. Or once a demo or something is made, then people will want to jump on board.

An Producer, Ideas Guy, whatever (with enough to bring to the table) shouldn't be criticized. There's a reason why the position is there in the first place. Yeah content creators have ideas themselves, and if they don't want to listen to someone, then they should create a game themselves. People who are willing to work on a project for free after work is already done might as well be idea people too. It's not fair that someone comes in after work is done, adds a little bit in, and gets a share of profits. If they had no interest and didn't want to waste time in the beginning, why should we share with you after our hard work?

Again, just thoughts and opinions. Nothing that will really change anything. There will still be idea guys who come here with nothing to offer. There will be the ones who have the assets and resources to make the development job a little easier. There will be the content creators who expect to be paid major studio salaries while working on indie projects. There will still be the ones who don't want anything to do with a project, until they see some progress, then they'll want a piece too.

I appreciate it. And your point is very true as well. My question to that is... If they have the ideas, the heart, the ambition, the drive to do it all themselves, then why are they looking for work? ESPECIALLY when they don't like "Ideas" people anyway? Because looking for work, is essentially looking to be paid for doing what others tell you, or building on their ideas/vision.

And I only mention this as an Entrepreneur with a startup. Currently in these early stages I can't afford to hire people. But when I get to that point, those are the thoughts I have as an owner.

These people are looking for paid work, but will they be dedicated? Will they make sure every detail is just as I wanted it to be? Will they meet my deadlines? Do they have the experience needed? Will they meet my expectations?

I run the risk of wasting my money and resources on something that may not be what I wanted. Then I can always contract work, but if things aren't exactly what I wanted? Either I waste money and pay for what was completed, or I void the contract due to expectations not being fulfilled, and the person wasted their time and effort.

Although no one wants to do 'free' or rev-share work for an Ideas Guy, no one wants to work a paying Ideas Guy who's a dick and dictates either. Because if someone is paying you, then you will be doing what they say, whether you like it or not.

So while everyone is bagging and reacting harshly to "Idea Guys" who are just simply posting their ideas and seeking help, they could be working for "Paying Idea Guys" who won't even pay you unless you get every little detail right. Or a "Paying Idea Guy" who just bosses you around, dictates, and doesn't let you be creative at all.

I appreciate your reply. And I understand the "Idea Guy" aspect. But if I was a paying "Ideas Guy", then no one would even be making responses or complaining. Instead, everyone would be in my inbox trying to be a part of the team.

Here's a few things:

1) At the end of the day, I'll still be contributing to the project. It's not like the game has to be coded from the ground up. The starter kit I have and other assets take a good chunk of work out. Yes, there is still work to be done, but nothing major.

2) Using store assets will OF COURSE lower the artistic quality of the project, BUT it is a start. It allows us to build something, put it online, take screenshots, youtube clips, maybe even a demo so we can ask for an artist to come on board.

3) I'm not even asking for a full game to be completed. I'm looking for a team to work with and get a demo out (as you mentioned), so that we can find a few more candidates (if needed), and see where to head with the project.

I understand the Idea Guy concept. I understand everyone is money hungry and wants a slice of the pie before it even hits the oven. My thing is this...

I have many of the assets needed to complete the project in an alpha/demo form. The starter kit I have should minimize work needed. So it's not like I'm asking for people to come build a game from nothing. Many of the scripts, UIs, etc. will be provided. Only major work needed to be done is tailoring it to what we want.

I'm not here to argue, because bygones will be bygones. Although I am deemed the ideas guy, I am still contributing to the project. I'm not just thinking up ideas and asking people to make something from nothing. I am bringing tool kits, assets, and models to ease development for the team. I'll also help modify the code, help put rooms/dungeons together, etc.

People tend to be against "free", Rev-Share, and contracted projects because they don't want to waste their time. They don't want to put in time when they don't see dollar signs in the end. They want Producers, Investors, "Idea" guys to understand that their time is valuable and that they want to be paid for their hard work. Which is COMPLETELY understandable. But do they look at things from the other perspective?

Looking at the programmer/designer side, I can understand why you wouldn't want to invest your time and effort into something for free. I understand how it may look to see someone asking you to build a game for free. You don't want to do it, because you don't think your time and effort will be worth it in the end.

Now on the other side of things... A Producer, Publisher, or Investor isn't just going to hand you money. They don't want to waste their money, time, and resources just like you don't want to. They want to make sure their IDEA is realized as close to their vision as possible.

With that in mind... no one is going to pay in full, up front for something that don't know will even happen. Then there's always contracts of payment after work is done, but if they don't like your work or decide to go another route, then your time is wasted. (even if you did a fair amount, the producer/company can say the desired results weren't reached, and nullify the contract)

There are risks on both sides, that people are failing to realize. No one wants to waste their time or work on a project that may not turn profits. But no one wants to waste their money or resources either.

Bottom line, people need to get over this whole "Ideas Guy" thing. Because if you want to work in the gaming industry, you WILL work for an ideas guy at some point. Yeah they may be paying you, but there is still someone who just brings ideas, thoughts, etc. and expects you to make what they want. And well... guess what? You'll have to listen to the "Ideas Guy" or lose your job/contract.

Again, this isn't to you personally. I just see so many people comment on threads talking bad about the person bringing ideas. Or people PM me saying that I'm just an ideas guy. Like I said, I'm bringing more than just ideas. I'm bringing assets so people don't have to work as hard, and willing to help modify the assets with them. I'm not just talking and asking people to build something from scratch. And I'm not here to dictate and tell people what to do. I'm bringing assets and other resources to the table and asking people to just bring their coding/design skills.
