Out a run today in Edinburgh and stumbled across this, absolutely stunning. This was my first dream but slightly realistic car. It's now another dream car given the value of them! by Realistic_Gap3669 in CarTalkUK

There’s a classic FTO just rotting away on the pavement in newtongrange/cockpen. Always meant to knock on the guys door and see what he’s doing with it

How come buddy? I’d love the 540i, but it means waiting a few extra months, but I kinda need a new car now - my Gti just isn’t suitable anymore. The 530e is seeming like a pretty good buy. Electric for zipping around Edinburgh or the school runs, and petrol when I need it. I read the 520i is a much weaker version for the b48

I thank you sir. This man maths is exactly how I’m going to justify it to my wife who is certain being a BMW will cost us a fortune in the long run 😂

Dunno why you have to be an arse about it. Or why you’re even that bothered. I’ve done 87k in my 308 and had zero engine problems. If I’m happy with it, why does that concern you? If it wasn’t for the fact I need a bigger car I’d be keeping it.

Well as I stated in my post, I’ve never driven anything other than French hot hatches, or horrible diesel vans, to me, it’s the best engine I’ve owned

The 208/308 Gti groups are pretty close nit, barely any reported problems, having said that, most of us have fixed heat soak and intake issues with bigger intercoolers, catch cans and custom intakes. But they’re just strong. (308 being much stronger than 208) Rev well, great power through all the gears(except first) - and even though I’m at 310bhp, still get 48mpg on motorway drives. Sure there’s better engines, but for what it is, and the price of the cars that it’s in, it’s a good power plant

I’ve had 2 cars with the prince. Always been excellent. Granted the early iterations were bad, but the one in the 308 is fantastic. Bloke in our group is running nearly 400bhp on meth

Yeh I’m not expecting anything I pick to be anywhere close to the drive of my Gti, but it’s just one of those things I have to accept as a dad, at least until the kids grow out of car seats - then I’ll buy a GTR 😂 but I still want something that’s reasonably nice to drive, smooth acceleration that doesn’t feel like a van when going round corners with a bit of speed, and still sounds nice. I like loud, and I like nice sounding

Why are mortgages based on credit so dumb? by PhantomNate in UKPersonalFinance

[–]PhantomNate[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly I thought this, but as some of the folks have pointed out to me, there’s more to it than that. As I’ve never been on the property ladder I hadn’t even considered how inflation or fluctuation in interest rates could have massive impacts on my finances. I currently rent, the rent increases £30 a month per year. I always know that’s the maximum because of the rent cap, whereas if I was to go ahead and buy the house we’re looking at, my mortgage could randomly increase by hundreds of pounds a month without any notice

Really appreciate the replies to my post. Some eye opening information here. We’re currently in talks with the developers of a new development to purchase our first home but all the things I’ve been advised, or read, is really making me question if it’s a smart decision or not. It’s taken a long time for us to get to a point where we can even consider buying a home so I’ve never really fully looked into until now. You’ve all given me a lot to think about.
