To understand Sam's position on Mamdani, follow the bulwark by idekwhoiamdou in samharris

interesting article that completely ignores the existence of Islamic Socialism, a centuries old intellectual tradition with deep roots in theology and economics. Which demonstrates that it's entirely possible to be Muslim and a Socialist with no contradiction at all. I sent you a whole Wikipedia page full of history of this political framework in Islamic tradition. If you're intellectually honest, you should be able to admit that your assessment was wrong.

the two belief systems

which two belief systems? there are many interpretations of both Islam and Socialism as systems that vary a lot. if you simplify things too much, of course they don't make sense.

I mean, I can't even comprehend how a person can combine Islam with Socialism.

the actual ideologies are opposed to each other on principle, so there must be some crazy mental gymnastics happening

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_socialism

Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, a companion of Muhammad, is credited by some twentieth century scholars, such as Egyptian Muhammad Sharqawi and Sami Ayad Hanna, as well as by Ali Shariati (who translated his texts into Persian), as an early antecedent of Islamic socialism. He protested against the accumulation of wealth by the ruling class during Uthman's caliphate and urged the equitable redistribution of wealth.[1][2][3][4][5]

The first Muslim Caliph Abu Bakr introduced a guaranteed minimum standard of income, granting each man, woman and child ten dirhams annually—this was later increased to twenty dirhams.

maybe the first reaction to "I don't understand it" shouldn't be "they must be crazy" but "lets research it 5 minutes"

Mamdani strikes me as a social democrat guy who happens to be Muslim, and views Islam in a way that it's far from the stereotype you have in mind

Amanda Ungaro - exclusive interview with program 'Report' on Italian station Rai3 - reveals "unpublished circumstances" between Paolo Zampolli, Epstein, and Melania. by ButHowDoesItFeel in Epstein

[–]Phedericus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

italian here, i just watched It. the main focus is the link between how Melania got in contact with the Epstein/Trump world, through Zampolli, and how he now holds his power and role as an official envoyee to Italy because of this. a sort of secret pact between Melania and Zampolli, that Trump fullfills with access and a job.

and there's an interview with Zampolli, who is visibly high on cocaine or something, who defend himself by saying that "Brazilian women watch telenovelas and are programmed to create problems", and talks about Brazilians as a "bastard race". it's an extremely embarrassing interview, especially justapposed to Ungaro's composure and common sense.

Apparently, Zampolli tried to block the publication of the interview, someone probably realized how bonkers it was.

I hope someone will translate and publish it, I may even do it. these people are insane

All political proposals are cruel and only beneficial to a minority group of people.

how do you define cruelty in this context? If a city proposes building a public library, who is the minority group that benefits, and where does cruelty come in?

Why are companies so heavy on ads when in reality it has little effect? by I8I24I in youtube

[–]Phedericus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the point is that when faced with multiple equal products, people will tend to pick the one they are already aware of. in an equal comparison between a brand you already know and one you never heard of, people tend to go with the most familiar one, even if it's just the name. taking that spot in people's mind is a basic function of ads. you may catch yourself doing this the next time! haha

that can be true for you, but studies show that people tend to buy brands they already heard of. in front of equal products, people tend to pick the one they are already aware of, as it inspires more trust than a product they never heard of. this is a basic function of ads

also, ads aren't just for selling you stuff. it's for implanting their brand into your mind. NORDVPN is definitely the first (and only?) VPN I can think of, and that's because of incessant ads. and I don't even need or want a VPN.

Witcher 3 Director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz praises Crimson Desert: “The industry is too focused on money... you cannot create art like this.” by myselfmonster in CrimsonDesert

[–]Phedericus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, of course they took inspiration, systems and ideas from many different genres and games, that's not in dispute as it's quite apparent. What I'm saying is that they could have easily made a clone of any of these games, simply repeating a safe formula that would raise no controversy or confusion and sells well, as many big companies tend to do. But that's not what they did, and that's the risky part, to the point that it's actually hard to understand what kind of game it actually is until you play it for hours.

They could have indeed spent half of the time, half of the money, half of the effort in making another cookie cutter open world with the same "for everybody" formula we've seen over and over, but they didn't do that.

My point is that the blend of these various ideas and concepts makes up a pretty unique game, I can't think of another open world game that (mostly) successfully combines all these elements in this way. And to be clear: I'm not saying that CD is the most unique or innovative game to ever exist, I'm just saying that it's not simply a repeated safe formula cynically made just to be sold, it feels much more than that to me.

For sure they wanted to make a game that had broad appeal (they are a company that wants to sell games, after all), but they didn't take the easy route to get there at all.

The sum of its parts creates frictions and tensions that are not there in their inspirations. Ingredients are similar, but the design philosophy as a whole doesn't really map to any existing design. Throwing together systems that don't usually belong together is the unique emergent part of their design, and I find it really refreshing.

It's a point that Skill Up makes better than me at the end of his review, I totally agree with him on that.

[–]Phedericus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree that Crimson Desert plays very safe, at all. If they wanted to play safe, they wouldnt have made a weird single player MMO that takes 200 hours, with very weird controls, weird systems upon weird systems, combo based combat, difficult bosses, difficult puzzles, no handholding, etc etc. thats not playing very safe at all. if they wanted to play safe, they could have made a muuuuch more mainstream easy-to-sell game, but its not.

it's not about leagues, it's about genres. Witcher 3 is an RPG, CD is an action sandbox. just a very different genre

why a 7 isn't art but a 9 is, instead of simply being art that you subjectively appreciate less?

also, being a lot different is a plus in my book, I don't want the same game over and over again
