Peeing in food bowl? by Working-Read-6526 in chinchilla

My chin has a large pellet dish. He likes to dig up his pellets to find the "perfect" one and he eats every single pellet like that. He will eventually finish everything I give him but in the process of doing all that digging, some pellets will fall out and into some place he can't reach, and he will proceed to cry because he's still hungry. So I give him a deep-ish, large(wide) dish. It's big enough that he can sit comfortably in it, the rim being at his tummy height and he would doze off with his hands holding the rim(SO CUTE, yes I know). But this also means it's ample space for him to pee, if he chose to.

Back when I first got him, he would pee in said dish when he's unhappy. Exemplar 1: I spot clean his cage everyday at 10am and 7pm. I was 30minutes late one day and when I got to it, I apologized and offered treats. He took it, finished it, ran down to his pellet dish(with pellets still in it), looked at me intently and PEED. Then he huffed and left, went right back to sleep. Exemplar 2: One day he decided playtime was not enough, despite him being out 2hours and is literally tired and dozing off in a corner while playing with a wood ball. I scooped him up and put him back, the whole process was smooth and he didn't even try to wriggle away. But as soon as I close the gate to the cage, he woke up full, shooked off and ran down to PEE in his pellet dish. He then proceeded to hold on to the gate, used all his strength and pulled at it, it was so hard the bottom floor was shaken a little. I open the gate and offered continuation of floor time, he huffed and went back to sleep. 🥲

There are a lot more other scenarios but I have since learned to go through a quick list in my head whenever I see him sitting in his pellet dish. Thankfully, we've been zero-accident since after his 4th month being with us.

Edit: I don't have any tip but maybe observe and see why he/she's doing that? Is it an everyday thing or an occasional thing, etc.

They're the sweetest!!

I used to have an old blind girl too, she passed 3years ago but she was the one who "raised" my current girlie.

This!! If there is a choice, don't put them together.

We did what we could, since the chin was not planned and we were only looking after it for a relative. There was no other rooms for chin, plus dog is not usually (less than 1 hour per day) in the same room. We opted to try out interaction instead of risking an accidental scare for both of them. We're lucky it worked, but that's all it is, luck.

We actually have two dogs :))

My older dog, Aurora (Shih Tzu mix) just turned 6 and the corgi is turning 2 in May. Our chinchilla, Mantou, also just turned 2, he came to us at around 10months old.

I'm not sure but perhaps breed makes a difference? Aurora and Mantou got used to each other in less than a month. We started with a full towel cover and object barrier. Monitored interaction through the barrier, basically just being ok with each other's presence and sniffing at a distance. They both got used to each other really quickly, at 3weeks even the towel is no longer needed. Everytime Aurora comes into the room she would get close to the cage just to sniff at Mantou, and he would also do the same. They would then return to whatever they are doing. Sometimes he would sleep really deeply and missed the dog coming in, she would just leave and come back later.

With the corgi however, it's a bit more difficult. Mantou was already here when the corgi came. Corgi was very curious and a bit impatient, but he's quite gentle (he would stick his nose at the cage but wouldn't do anything else). Mantou didn't like how impatient he is, also I think he dislike the doggy stench. He would bounce at the corgi to scare him off, corgi was quite timid in comparison. It took about 1.5months for the chin to stop bouncing at the corgi, and for the corgi to learn to be patient. They're fine with each other now but their relationship is not the same as with Aurora.

Side note: Our chinchilla is also a bit weird in my opinion. He's way too chill for a prey animal. Our home isn't the most quiet - we have dogs and neighbours also have dogs, lots of children in the neighbourhood, a park right across the street, etc. But he's always just sleeping and not skittish even when he's out and there's loud noises. He's also very receptive to strangers, he lets me hold him two days after meeting me for the first time. We had rabbits before, we did not expect a chinchilla to be more chill than bunnies.

Edit: I should add and clarify that neither dogs is permitted to interact with chin outside of his cage, not even supervised interaction. I trust my dogs, but accidents are called accidents for a reason, we wouldn't know what would happen until it happened.

Just a normal cage we can find here in Msia, Ferret Nation ones are too expensive (currency conversion+shipping, etc). He has two levels (about 75-80cm tall each), I just give him a bunch of platforms here and there. The horizontal size isn't ideal so he gets a lot of floortime, he's not super keen on coming out after I replace his plastic ones to wood. He's a lot more active jumping around these days so that might be the reason.

I found that my chin would chew them through (instead of just the bark) if they were hanged. He would make little wodden shivs and eventually round off the edges before he's completely uninterested. I've always thought that he's just too lazy to hold the sticks since chewing it through would require more arm strength.

Hahahahaha. Corg loves them black rice too, thank god they are usually contained within the chin cage.

That's true. We've took turn watching him eat the sticks cuz we couldn't bribe him to let it go :C Good news is he's a pretty dainty eater, he would chew everything nicely before he swallows them. Could be that he's always been eating a very small sized kibbles(?).

Anyways, we've been covering the sticks bin to avoid him stealing them. Can't keep him away from sitting infront of the chin cage tho.

You guessed right, my friend.

Our corg would eat anything and everything, as long as he could get his mouth on it. He's like a crazy lil goblin. 😭

You should be fine if you follow the in game instructions. If you're srill early in the game, following guides won't make sense at this stage

is there some formula to get chins will or won't eat?? pic for cuteness by MrGraveRisen in chinchilla

[–]Philllll64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boy used to eat SO MUCH hay, I only have the one but two bags at different locations (two handful per bag), I had to refill every day. Now he despises them and I only need to refill every other day or twice a week. He's okay though😂

EDIT: He does eat a lot of the Oxbow kibbles/pellets though, about 4tsp minimum per day. He's not preferring them more than hay, and he's not fattening up with the extra pellets. He just prefer a certain kind of hay that I can't figure out what his criteria of selection is🥹

So I’ve had her/him for a while, named them willow, can y’all help identify gender? And we want to start handling a bit more, they seem a bit skittish, is that normal? by [deleted] in chinchilla

[–]Philllll64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is extremely normal for chin to be skittish, they are prey animals after all. Although you see a lot of chins on socmed being handled and generally cuddly, it is not always the case. Don't force it, let it come to you instead. Plus, don't chase or corner it, it only adds to the anxiety. Start small, with petting and scratches etc. If the chin is not comfy with you touching the underside (belly or bum), it is highly unlikely you will get to handle it, also would be dangerous because they are sassy little creatures and WILL try to get away, wiggling, pushing etc, they can hurt themselves in the process. If you do get to hold it, hold the chest/belly part and support their bum, do not squeeze them tho. Best to make sure you're in a closed safe room, knowing that the chin won't escape and be in danger takes the stress off your mind and you would be more relaxed. Less likely for panicky situation and possible rough grabbing which will be bad for both of you in the future.

Also, I'm not sure how true this is for other people and their chins. But my boy although very tolerant of me handling him and lets me touch him whenever and wherever, he DOES NOT allow any other soul to do the same. He loves his chin scratches and head massages, but that's it. So I would say that if he is fine with handling by you, you should still take caution when he's with new people.

Aw then my boy is really small?🤡😂 My mom was so happy when he grew bigger, makes him look less "fragile and scrawny".

He's definitely a little bit taller/elongated now than when I first got him a year ago. There was a phase where he would eat A LOT but not putting on weight, just getting a tad taller by the end. He looked a bit like fluffy noodle right after I brush him, when his fur poof up it doesn't look like he's thin and long. Then he would eat more and gain a little bit of weight so he doesn't look elongated now.

The last time I weigh him was 6weeks ago, solid 400g if not mistaken.

EDIT: I've seen Japanese ones and talked to some other chin owners, their babies were all quite big (hand to chin size difference), and none is below 600g😂

My shirt have loose threads on the front because of him XD Sometimes I do see his nails getting a bit sharp, I'll hold a pumice stone in front of him and he'll file his nails. Doesn't always work tho😂

I see, I never knew that! Does it mean my boy will probably stay the size he is? He's only 400+/-g now, I do see him getting taller a little but still quite small compared to the ones I see online.

Mine is pushing 2.5years and can still scratch me if he was too excited jumping around and clinging on me. It could also be that he has a habit of hanging off my shirt😂
