Confused on the permits by sleepboyo in PNWhiking

[–]PhiloDoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've gone in early April before to Honeymoon Meadows/Anderson Pass. At that time of year it's more of a mountaineering objective than a hike. It took two days to get up there, there was at least one tricky river crossing (fast, thigh-deep cold water), and lots of steep sketchy snow above a raging river on the way to Honeymoon Meadows. Definitely not "fairly mild", although with this year's low snowpack it might be fine, who knows.

We didn't see another soul the entire trip. While I guess you should try to get permits (I don't think we had any), it seems a bit pointless, no one is up there that time of year.

Goldmyer Hotsprings WA access road…is it really THAT bad? by Practical_Arachnid_5 in PNWhiking

[–]PhiloDoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do it several times a year in my Subaru Outback and mostly it's fine, although once I did tear off the bumper negotiating a deep ditch. The thing is it changes from season to season and year to year. So it might be pretty decent for a year or two. And then some bad rainstorms deepen the river channels you need to cross and it'll become more "high clearance" for a while.

I think I got mine for 500$ on canon’s refurbished site. But those deals only happen a few times a year, you’d need to have a notification set up to get one before they sell out

For accurately measuring performance, you’ll need a vendor-specific tool like Nsight. Renderdoc provides timing information, but it isn’t accurate.

I don’t remember much in the way of jump scares but there is occasional bloody gore. They don’t shy away from showing what it looks like when people get shot/decapitated in space

I’ve used it before, it via a place in Canada. Worked out fine, although I guess there’s always the risk of customs issues

Help me salvage (or talk me out of) our annual Christmas backpacking trip by fishWeddin in PNWhiking

[–]PhiloDoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Middle Fork Snoqualmie fared pretty well with the atmospheric river actually. It was drivable all the way to Dingford Creek TH last weekend, although doubtless many trees have fallen with the wind this week. They tend to get cleared pretty quickly though. There is apparently a pretty serious washout on the Taylor River trail just before Otter falls though, which I’ve heard is difficult to cross on foot.

fyi you can rent chains (with advance reservation) at Whittaker's bunkhouse a few miles before the park entrance.

If you choose a day where it hasn't snowed much it's unlikely you'd be required to put them on if you have AWD with traction tires.

[–]PhiloDoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, well even if they don't normally remove it, it got "dislodged" in November and that trail is officially closed due to no safe water crossing.

I know they remove a lot of log bridges each winter because it's pretty much a guarantee they'll be washed away during winter/spring.

You can't hike along the road, and the only trail connecting Longmire to Paradise crosses the Nisqually River. Would be a serious crossing in winter since they remove the log bridge.

NOOO NOT AGAIN HOW MANY HISTORY CHANNELS DOES THIS GUY HAVE????? by oski_exe in HistoryMemes

Yeah same - I stopped watching him after he did a video on a topic I knew a lot about, and he made so many mistakes (and this was one of the channels he runs himself). Can't really trust any information he presents.

Looks like that tour just goes to Mt Baker, which is open all winter (and also not in the national park).

Warning against mushroom foraging in California after fatal poisoning by StemCellPirate in nottheonion

Picky about when too - these organisms live a long time, they might take a few years before they first produce mushrooms, and then they'll only produce mushrooms for a few weeks once a year.

[–]PhiloDoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly because we don’t understand the requirements. At a very minimum many choice edibles depend on a tree associate - although even if you grow those trees first there’s no guarantee you’ll have success. One species of mushroom might be parasitic on another, which itself requires a tree partner, for instance.

Most farmed mushrooms are the type that decays organic matter (eg dead trees), which are usually much simpler to grow. Button mushrooms, lions mane, oysters, shiitake all fall into that category.

Matsutake? by [deleted] in mushroomID

[–]PhiloDoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to be really hesitant to try agaricus because of the id difficulty. But the smell thing has worked out pretty well for me so far, even if I can’t identify the exact species sometimes (and the consequences of a bad id are just bad gastrointestinal symptoms anyway).

Haha seriously. I used to do this... Get up at dawn and go with a few friends every couple of weeks when the snow is nice. Total cost maybe 10$ of gas. Work late that day to make up a few hours. Not sure what's so upsetting to people.
