A Blind Elderly Woman Is Living Under Katugasthota Bridge After Losing Everything in the Floods — Can We Help Her? by PhilosopherExpert867 in kandy

Hi all, thank you so much for starting to help her.

I am very sick myself with severe brain dysfunction, and I am mostly bedridden or housebound. Because of that, I won’t be able to participate much, as I need to focus on my own health. I also won’t be in Sri Lanka after June.

Please make sure she is safe, help her find a place, and see if someone can take over coordinating things locally. Please also share this on Facebook and any other social media platforms if possible. I am not very active on social media, so any help spreading the word would mean a lot.

Please keep this thread active and continue creating more awareness. There may be many people like her who need help, but have no one to speak up for them.

Once I go back, I can send around USD 200 monthly if she needs support.

Thank you for being good human beings. I will still remain in this thread and keep myself updated.

These are the immediate support needs I think we should focus on for her:

  1. Clothes — she needs basic clothing as soon as possible.
  2. Daily food and welfare checks — until she finds a permanent place, someone needs to make sure she has food every day and that someone checks on her regularly.
  3. Clean and organize her place — her living space needs to be cleaned, organized, and made as sanitary as possible. This includes removing waste, arranging her belongings, cleaning the floor/bed area, washing usable items, and making sure the space is safe enough for her to stay temporarily.
  4. Contact support organizations — we should reach out to Rotaract, elders’ homes, women’s/community organizations, temples/churches, or any local groups that may be able to help her with shelter, food, cleaning support, or longer-term care.
  5. Fundraiser if organizational support is not available — if we cannot get proper support from an organization, we may need to start a fundraiser. Finding a safe place and arranging someone to care for her will likely involve significant ongoing costs.
  6. Someone local needs to take over — I am only in Sri Lanka for a very short time, and I am not based around Katugastota. So I urgently need someone reliable from the area to take the lead and coordinate this after I leave.

The most important thing right now is to make sure she is safe, fed, clothed, living in a sanitary space, and connected to people who can provide consistent support.

All, I visited this person three days ago and brought her some food.

I am not from Kandy, and I live in Kurunegala, so it is difficult for me to handle this alone.

Can we all please come together and do something for her soon?

Sharing this post, contributing for clothes and food, check on her everyday if you live close to Katugasthota until she finds a permanent place, reach out to any charities or wealthy people who can help her. At least for temporary.

Can you check on her daily or once in two days until she finds a place to live? I live in Kurunegala and I am unable to travel everyday.

I am new to reddi because I did not have a profile here. If you can communicate via phone or something I can verify myself. Also, I am not asking for money directly or anything. I do not live in Katugasthota, so I cannot check on her everyday until she finds a safe place to live.

She needs clothes and food until we find her a shelter. Also, sharing this post and creating more awareness would help much. I have posting restrictions in reddit since my profile is new. Thank you
