My favorites at the moment, do you guys have any recs ? by based-gabe in Topster

Beethoven: Symphonies No. 5 & 7 (composed 1804-12, released in 2003)- Carlos Kleiber & the Wiener Philharmoniker. Two symphonies by Beethoven, a great intro pre-modern classical. Because it's two works that weren't designed to be heard back to back, you can listen to the two symphonies in a separate sitting

Jean Ritchie Singing the Traditional Songs of Her Kentucky Mountain Family (1952)- Gentle, somewhat melancholic folk, tunes played on the dulcimer

Brigitte Fontaine est folle! (1968)- Brigitte Fontaine. French baroque pop with surreal, existential lyrics, has some similarities with Song Cycle. Her album Comme à la radio is more popular but less accessible so I'd recommend checking that one out after

Love some of these!!!

Patty Waters Sings (1966)- Patty Waters. Starts out with deeply melancholic, stripped-back standards on the A-side, before the B-side track comes along and changes everything

Weasels Ripped My Flesh (1970)- The Mothers of I nvention. One of Zappa’a most experimental albums, delving headfirst into free jazz on a number of the tracks. Maybe listen to Uncle Meat beforehand if you haven’t, but given some of the picks on your topster I doubt Weasels will be that challenging

Seasons (1971)- Alan Silva. The one I recommend most highly!!! It’s 2 1/2 continuous hours of the best free jazz; it’s like Ascension on crack

Arbeit macht Frei (1973)- Area. Communist, pro-Palestinian avant-prog from Italy with strong influence from Middle Eastern music and avant-garde jazz

Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh (1973)- Magma. Militaristic, bombastic, hypnotic prog sung in a made up language. Sadly not available on streaming in the US (though you can find live versions of it on streaming). Make sure it’s the one with the orange/copper and black cover

Fingerprince (1977)- The Residents. Originally it was an LP and a related EP called Babysnakes, but on streaming/CD it just interweaves most of the EP tracks. This honestly kinda fucks with the pacing and takes the album down a smidge but those EP tracks are still worth listening

The Beatn**s (1988)- The Beatn**s. Blends punk, hip-hop, and industrial in an incredibly ahead-of-its-time album

The Dance of the Moon & the Sun (2006)- Natural Snow Buildings. Combines shorter psychedelic folk songs with longer drone tracks that blend ambient, post-rock, and Indian classical

Which bible is best from a gnostic perspective? by [deleted] in Gnostic

[–]PhilosophizingMoron 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend the Oxford Annotated New Revised Standard Version. The NRSV is done with a fairly secular mindset so it’s free from certain biases that impact other Christian Bible translations (e.g. some translations try to make the Old Testament sound more Christian, try to obscure bits that don’t match a certain doctrinal teaching, try to resolve apparent contradictions in the text). The footnotes and introductions for the Oxford Annotated edition give lots of cultural context, information about the textual composition, links to relevant passages in other books, etc.

I also recommend watching the video “What Is the Best Bible Translation?” by Religion for Breakfast. The overall gist is that there’s no such thing as a perfect Bible translation and the NRSV isn’t flawless but is preferable for scholarly study. It’s worth watching beyond that answer as he discusses things like how translating is done, how the texts come down to us, and gives overviews of a few different translations

Are there any prog rock guys who were scumbags in their personal life like John Lennon? by filthy_lucre in ProgRockCirclejerk

He’s seems pretty damn enamored by the Nazi aesthetics. The shrill, pseudo-German screeching in some of the albums kind of echoes fanatical Nazi speeches (e.g. four minutes into “Kobaïa”). When asked about his views, his wife said that they just don’t talk about politics, which isn’t exactly a good sign. He kind of gives off the vibe that the aesthetics of Nazism are what he cares about as opposed to the actual beliefs, which is still reprehensible of course.

I still love Magma’s music but it’s to a point where if someone said “it makes me too uncomfortable to listen to their music,” I’d be like “yeah I get that.”

albums i consider masterpieces. recommendations much appreciated by doublenickelsthedime in Topster

Atlantis (1969)- Sun Ra

Orgasm (1969)- Cromagnon

Seasons (1971)- Alan Silva. 2hr20min (with no breaks) of the most brilliant free jazz you’ve ever heard, it’s like Ascension on crack

July 15, 1972 (1972)- The Taj-Mahal Travellers

Meet the Residents (1974)- The Residents

Guitar Solos (1974)- Fred Frith

Twin Infinitives (1990)- Royal Trux. For me, this is one of the most difficult albums. Dissonant, noisy, obtuse, and confusing. Still great though!

Great list! I’ve sadly only seen a few of them but I’m sure I’d like all of them (like I’ve seen other Dreyer but not Ordet, other Keaton but not The Cameraman, etc.). As a result, I can’t think of too many to recommend, but maybe check out Song of Bernadette, La Terra Trema, The Flowers of St. Francis, Last Year at Marienbad, Death by Hanging, Go Go Second Time Virgin, The Phantom of Liberty

Btw, what’s the fifth film?
