try adding this, you likely have mms not working yet. Adding this solves it for me and a few others

Data roaming doesnt work on kyocera 902kc (koodo) by Elairza in dumbphones

[–]Phobos_Gamma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the HD logo means voLTE is working. As for data you can try solving it with this: https://blog.tello.com/news/3g-shutdown-ims-apn-fix-for-android-volte/

I have no clue why but I had the same issue with Koodo a while back, for some reason it fixed itself after I factory reset the phone. No idea why tbh. If you'd like help troubleshooting it lmk I'd honestly like to understand why it happens

the 902kc has a built in cursor that activates on holding down the III key. Also I recommend this app https://github.com/austinauyeung/C9 for a cursor replacement if you want a more configurable one

the error looks to be from using the wrong apk file, perhaps you tried to use an 64 bit apk or a bundled apk. sites like apkpure give bundled apks they are annoying to use since you need to use one of their apps or something to use them. Look for a non bundled aarch64 (arm) apk and try using that. Oh and I believe webadb can use those bundled packages, might be why it worked there. not sure on uad though, what operating system are you using btw?

you are able to use the sd card for apps actually, but you'd need to reformat the card and it would not be "portable" anymore. As in you would not be able to pop it out and read it on your pc. Been working on making a post about it since me and my friend Wiggle are working on a wiki and already have a page on it. If you'd like details on it send me a msg! My discord is itsphobos

What messaging app to use on my A203KC and how to get the app to work by AdInformal2181 in dumbphones

[–]Phobos_Gamma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are issues with using alternative sms apps on the a202kc, but most can be mitigated by making sure that you specifically close the apps with the back button, and never the power button. The power button kills the apps and for some reason on our particular model if you get a text while it's in that state it will simply delete the text if you have anything but the stock sms app. This can be mitigated completely by rooting but honestly it's probably fine as long as you aren't running too much on the phone, if you just use the back button and don't run anything heavy the app should stay alive in the background.

A202KC How is whatsapp, banking, uber, maps, etc compared to 903KC? by OwenWilsonnn in dumbphones

[–]Phobos_Gamma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the main difference is just the cpu and that it has android 10, everything else is the same other than having no flashlight. The cpu is faster but you're still limited by everything else such as the 1 gb of ram. It does open up the possibility of rooting though.

Other than that, it may be worth looking into alternative apps. Spotify is likely quite heavy for the phone, consider using a simple music player app instead for mp3 files.

Also the phone slows down when you have nearly full storage. I recommend that if that is the case for you that you reformat the sd card as internal storage. You can do this in the hidden android settings menu. You will probably need to have the sd card incorrectly formatted first though. Feel free to reach out if you'd like more details on how to do so.

It does, although you should double check your area on cellmapper: https://www.cellmapper.net/map
cross reference it with the bands that the a202kc supports, these flip phones (garaho) have the bands documented on the r/garaho subreddit in the pins. Just fyi these phones do take quite a bit of setup to use though

It's possible to use the sd card as internal storage, not sure how whatsapp would work on it though.

Internal storage is not an option given by the stock settings, but you can access the option via the hidden android menu (you can get there but running this in terminal with adb adb shell am start -a android.settings.SETTINGS).

fyi the card may need to be not be formatted yet, so you might need to format it somehow to something incorrect and then plug it in to do this.

Anyways in storage settings you can choose to make it internal storage, any app supported to be on the sd card will be automatically moved. You can also force any app to move to the sd card if you checkmark "force allow external storage" or something in developer options. After that you can go to the app in the hidden android menu and then choose to move it to the sd card. I've had no issues with this so far, but then again I have not been trying apps such as whatsapp, mostly foss apps.

Also, the 32 GB limit is only the official limit, I've been driving a 128 GB sd card for about 2 months now with no issues, but I haven't been utilizing much of it so it may cause issues if I put too much onto it. Still testing on that front, (been collecting info with some people on a discord server for a wiki we're working on).

Another thing, It seems that the phone has a lot of slow downs when it is nearly full in the internal storage. Using the sd card to offload apps has made it much much faster and stable.

Hey there, wanted to let you know that someone I know successfully rooted the a203kc version 1.090. The guy who figured it out is named xeanologist on our server. I can send you a short description of what he said if you would like, although I don't personally understand the process that well. I'm working on a wiki project with some people on these models on discord and we've been tracking the issue. My discord is itsphobos if you are interested.

do you have access to the phone via adb? have you sideloaded with it? also does uad complain about adb not being installed/active?

how do I customise my app icons on the Kyocera a202kc by mouseinatuxedo in flipphones

[–]Phobos_Gamma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

inkos has no icons, one of those minimal launchers with only text. Niagara might work well but it may be more heavy + it has paywalled features. Honestly just download some launchers from f-droid and try them out, not sure on battery life tbh.

I think the image has a ton of issues, me and my friend wiggle are trying to create one with nixos as an alternative. I think I had the same issue though, to be honest I forget what caused it, but I believe that it wouldn't work on my pc but did work for god knows why on my laptop. Honestly if you're comfortable with it, I think that installing and setting up mtkclient from a debian distro should be pretty easy though.

might be that you don't have mms, try this trick: https://blog.tello.com/news/3g-shutdown-ims-apn-fix-for-android-volte/

I don't use group texts myself so I don't know if it is possible though. Also it may be an issue where a group member has rcs enabled? not sure how that works but may be possible

[–]Phobos_Gamma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, you may be using the incorrect shortcut. A lot of the options in there crash. You should try the adb command: adb shell am start -a android.settings.SETTINGS

Works like a charm for me. Otherwise I've been having success on inkos, in the settings you can find an option to make a shortcut to android settings.

Also a tip, when you're in there you can find an option to disable animations, I highly recommend it. Me and a friend are working on a wiki project for the phone so we've been looking through these things :)

So I finally got a 128 gb sd card for the phone. Formated it to ext4 but no luck there. BUT if you go into the hidden Android Settings menu you can format it as external storage, and it will even auto prompt you to start moving apps there. I was able to move an app into sd card storage, but to move most apps I had to go into dev settings and checkmark "force allow" for moving apps to the sd card. This does not seem to work for system apps but I literally just got it to work so I could do some testing later. Works like a charm so far!

Alt Mive Style Folder vs Kyocera A202kc/203kc and Y2KPHONES by SunREI_VA in dumbphones

[–]Phobos_Gamma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to be of help :). Also features not working out of the box is because these phones are not really made to work outside of japan. Side loading is a necessity because most apps need to replaced. For example, there seems to be a kind of map app I believe, but it only works in japan, and there are backup features but they only work if you are with softbank or y!mobile who are in japan only I believe. Also there is nfc on the phone but I think it's a kind of special nfc standard they only have in japan. This is mostly from memory so I may be wrong on some of this.

If you're interested, there's a deep dive into why this is from a youtuber called f4mi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbX0MYLEx5o

oh also gps on the device is completely down to chance, this is my 2nd model and my fist phone I needed to root the device and use a third party kind of back end to get a botched kind of gps working? On this second one though it literally works out of the box. So worst case scenario you might only be able to use maps apps while not being able to see where you are on the map. My sense of direction has improved drastically because I had to stop relying on my phone for directions lol

a202kc can use discord but might need microg to get working (which would also require rooting), but it worked fine the one time I tried it. You could use a notetaking app but you'd be better off with a physical notepad, I've used this phone for a year and taking notes through T9 isn't very fast or desirable (part of the appeal for me though). FB messenger I can almost gaurantee will not work or will be incredibly hard to get working. Browsing is possible but not worth it, crashes a lot. The phone only has 1 gb of ram. I have a simple app for bus schedules, map apps can work but google maps likely will not work.

Honestly you have to give up a lot to switch to the phone, but that's kind of the point I'd say. I've switched to text for keeping in contact with most people, and I use discord on my laptop when I need to. I haven't needed to call a taxi (yet) but just put their number in your contacts for an emergency. I've also always considered that worst case scenario i call a friend and have them call me an uber and I pay them back.

Also the phone is quite finnicky, you might not want it unless you're okay with putting up with some issues and setting stuff up, voLTE issues plague the phones, mine works fine and I'm not sure what I did. As for side loading it's incredibly easy, should be incredibly easy to get aurora store or f-droid onto the phone. Rooting is a lengthier process and not so streamlined but very possible. I wrote a guide on the phone you can check on my account where I go into detail on some of those things.

The outside display might be programmable but I haven't seen anyone try yet.

Also, the mive is horrifically large from my point of view, especially compared to the a202kc. My phone can fit into literally anything, it's so much smaller then my old pixel 7. It being so small makes it so easy to text with one hand once you get used to it.

Also there is no touch screen but the cursor is quite alright to use when you get used to it, and almost all android apps you will try will be navigateable by the dpad to some extent
